The Elephant in the Living Room

I know it's difficult, but we have to talk about it.

It's like we've hit peak production on trainwreck all-star collaborations. There will be others, but never again like this. Try to turn away. You cannot.

Oh Lord, that's horrible. Douche chills.

It looks like none of them even know the words and they are reading off a screen on the stage in front of them.

Where was that and WHY were those six even on a stage together?

When my grandfather died in 1992 at age 85 he said that he was ready to go because the world he now lived in was not one he recognized anymore. After watching that video I'm starting to feel the same way.

Actually, if you can read lips, you'd know that Sir Elton was asking Lada Gaga for the name of her designer.

As for why they were together, probably for a benefit of some kind.
It did not benefit our senses.

Here's the background information: [url]http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/15/arts/music/15rainforest.html.

It was at Carnegie Hall last week as a benefit for Sting's Rainforest Foundation. The "theme" of the night was 80's Nostalgia.

Yes, save the "rainforest", because if we still called them "jungles" no one would give a shit.

Shirley Bassey not only brough absolutely nothing to the table, it actually wasn't clear she knew which way the audience was.

What good is used up Sting and how can it be worth having?

Maybe later when I've got a drink in my hand.

When I asked if I really had to, the answer should have been 'ABSOLUTELY' because watching Queen Elton leer at and grope those guys made it worth it.

Wow though. What a piece of crap of a performance. All the way around - they all get credit for that.

Speaking of which, Sir Elton certainly seems off the wagon in that shot.

Jamie Foxxis punishing himself for not thinking of that.

I'm with Soups-- this nudges it just over whatever hump separates garden-variety "terrible" from "over-the-top eye-fucking."

Re: The Elephant in the Living Room

Couple of notes:

Did you notice that Lady Gaga and Bruce are the only people who seem to actually know the song?

The extras (4:15) were from the Elton John-sung Madonna medley earlier in the show. He did Material Girl and Like a Virgin with those dancers.
Bruce is joined at the microphone (3:55) by Kate Hudson.
The person planting the kiss on Bruce at the end is Trudie Styler (a/k/a Mrs. Sting).

I believe the bottom end on the ticket prices for this event were $300 which is why I passed. Bruce was the "surprise" guest at the end but I think it was somewhat known he would be showing up.

Funnily enough, my initial reaction when hearing about this last week wasn't the everybody-joins-in-finale (whatever) but that Bruce had done "Cuts Like a Knife" (yes, the Bryan Adams song) as his "80s Nostalgia" choice for the evening.

Re: The Elephant in the Living Room

I'm almost afraid to ask this - but because the few times I've seen her it's been, in the true Madonna tradition, all about the outfits and half-naked men running around so it's hard to tell. So is Lady Gaga's act totally an image/fashion thing or can she actually sing?

The half-naked men were from Elton John's bit, as noted above.

But the costumes aside, yes, she can actually sing, write her songs and is also a decent piano player too.

Classically trained in childhood, accepted to Tisch as a music major, dropped out to perform on the LES club scene, and held a job writing songs for a small label for two years. The pipes are real, too-- there's chops there.

Musically, she's miles beyond Madonna.

It's mumbled at the beginning, but Sssstink is introducing by saying that, when he suggested to Bruce that they do it, Bruce claimed he didn't know it, and that he must be the only person in America who doesn't. Bruce claimed beforehand that he was a big fan of "Cuts Like a Knife." (Good on him if that's true but I have my suspicions.) How could he know that so intimately and not "DSB"? They're both come to the world through the same filter.

I would have gotten it in one guess. Maybe two.

A lot of folks are classically trained. She's a delivery system for a market-targeted, artifically generated image.

As per the NY Times article, that's backwards -- DSB was Bruce's suggestion and Sting who didn't know the song.

Oh no question. I just honestly didn't know whether or not there was an actual voice/talent to go with the manufactured image.
The one or two times I've seen her (on TV) there's so much bullshit going on on stage (naked male dancers, other performers, pyrotechnics, costume crimes, etc.) that it's hard to tell if there's even a song behind it all much less if there's actual talent there.

Yeah, and I'm coming down on the side of not so much that you'd notice if the bullshit was stripped away.

What, you don't wear Speedos out in public to perform?

Wow. You could see the two computer monitors facing the performers, and you just know they were showing the lyrics -- apparently not large enough for our aging rockers to see without their glasses.

Hey, I just confirmed she has chops, or at least more chops than [model's name here] who decides they want to "put out a track" after they finish the promotion work on their new, Target-sold line of bronzer.

But this is market-targeted? Yumpin' Yiminy.

I pretty much abhor all pop music...but I'm of the opinion that Lady Gaga does everything that Madonna has always tried to do much better than Madonna ever did.

I don't like her music, but I applaud her effort and appreciate her tongue-in-cheek style.
