Takahashi will Kiboshi the Phillies

(Takahashi'd put the kiboshi on the Phillies as well, but there's only so many words that are gonna fit in that narrow title box atop this thread.)

Re: Takahashi will Kiboshi the Phillies: IGT 5/26/10 PHIL@NYM

From today's Philadephia Daily News:
Shane Victorino hit from a different side of the plate against him. Ryan Howard hit him with a line drive. Neither strategy could stop R.A. Dickey, who became the latest starting pitcher - and the second straight knuckleballer - to shut down a Phillies team that appears to have entered one of its periodic recessions.

Hopefully the periodic recession lasts through the week. That's what happens when you have a mainly offensive (two meanings to that one) ballclub, and it's why the 93 wins from last season is probably their ceiling and why they definitely won't run away with the division and can be caught. Especially since the Mets play them 12 times from August 4th-EOS (hey, we may even have Beltran back by then!)

All good thoughts. And your scenarios might also save Jerry's job.

That trade never happened. You melded a few distinct trades into one. But you're close.

I never thought Jerry was going to be fired this year coming in. There were points during the season when I thought it got close, but I also think we're past that now. I think Bay and Reyes heating up will keep this team above .500 and climbing. So unless we get a zany sex scandal with Mr. Met's wife or something...

He'd be good comic relief at the parade. Fire him after that.

I can't think of the trade. I did see a Wendell shirt Friday night at the ballpark though. Haven't uploaded it yet or I'd link it. going to 3 of the last 4 games kinda saps free time.

Re: Takahashi will Kiboshi the Phillies: IGT 5/26/10 PHIL@NYM

I recommend cautious optimism. Remember, they smacked around the Phillies in the first game of the last series, then tumbled into the abyss.

Of course the Phillies were caught cheating after that series. So their "recession" might only last until they figure out that someone out of uniform should be using the binocs....

Trying not to count chickens here, too, MGiM.

But I do like the matchups this week-- knuckleballer, lefty-junkballer-with-hitch-in-delivery, fastball/demi-splitter-heavy Pelf. It's as if the pitching order were specifically sequenced to keep a patient offensive giant off-balance... and almost as if Manuel et. al. planned it that way.

Oh, I say such silly things sometimes!

a slumping "patient offensive giant" you should add. I liked the matchups. still do. Takahashi, new face, that hitch, slumping already, should keep them offbalance. Pelfrey is a fighter, and I trust him to be competitive. If all the Mets bats performed the way they're capable of, they can be just as dangerous an offensive club, and they're waking up. Blanton's not that good and they've always hit Hamels well (who really isn't throwing that well).

btw, the Mets have reached a tied for 4th place. moving on up!

Re: Takahashi will Kiboshi the Phillies: IGT 5/26/10 PHIL@NYM

In vague recognition of the return of the unlamented Brian Schneider, today's triptych consists of each player who was a Met, a Phillie and an Expo.

Most distinguished from a Met standpoint: Pedro Martinez, Endy Chavez, Todd Zeile.

Not all that distinguished, but not completely forgotten by those predisposed to remembering: Don Hahn, Del Unser, Willie Montanez.

The rest: Schneider, Bill Almon, Tom Gorman, Greg Harris, Barry Jones, Mike Maddux, Dan Schatzeder, Wayne Twitchell.

AND, visiting from the Mets-O's-Reds grouping: the peripatetic Bruce Chen!

Re: Takahashi will Kiboshi the Phillies: IGT 5/26/10 PHIL@NYM

Victorino, Francisco (hitting like GMJ), Valdez and Schneider. Those four aren't exactly making up a "scary world beating" Phillies lineup.

I caught Jody Macdonald saying the Phillies top 6 (ignore that back crap right?) is light years better than the Mets top 6, and would cause the Phillies to run away with the division. I'm not sure they're even just 'better'.

And don't forget Oil Spill.

The Francisco sub for Ibanez MAY make sense on paper-- the paper in "the book," anyway. But Takahashi-- like Valdes, Santana and most other screwball/change-up-dependent lefties-- tends toward reverse splits. We'll see.

It was a wicked double by Davis,
Wright Kd as Blanton saved his change-up until the count was 3-2,
Pagan hit a 100 hop single to right, Davis to third.
Barajas hits a sweet sac fly to left.
Frenchie walked, Takahashi lined out.

Re: Takahashi will Kiboshi the Phillies: IGT 5/26/10 PHIL@NYM

Didn't like Taka being pulled when he was. Unless he went to the bench saying he was spent I would have sent him out again.
Of course one can make the argument that the Mets added to the buffer by using a PH and sticking up a 3-spot that inning but I think he was being pulled regardless. Sometimes Jerry is like the fat guy who looks at his watch to decide whether or not he's hungry.
And the guys in the booth were talking about how there was some sort of plan in place to get Nieve X amount of pitches tonight in anticipation of a possible Saturday start, but the 9th tonight was an Ollie spot if there ever was one.

Other than those minor mishaps it was another near-perfect night. Wasn't a ton of hitting but all the little things went right. And ain't it amazing what happens when the K/BB ratios are in your favor instead of wildly against.

No walks, right? Is that a first for the 2010 Mets?

I imagine that if getting a guy to reach was so important as all that for Jerry, he'd have used Carter and not Cora. I could be wrong there. (He may have worried that Carter would be countered with a lefthanded pitcher.) But my impression was that the pinch-hitter came up because Jerry was pulling the pitcher, not that Jerry pulled the pitcher because the pinch-hitter came up.

Re: Takahashi will Kiboshi the Phillies: IGT 5/26/10 PHIL@NYM

The story in Newsday was leaning toward Takahashi being gassed at 94 pitches. I also think that as long as Castillo is hurting we're going to see Cora coming in for late inning defense for a while, so with the lead it makes a bit more sense. Tied or down I think we see Carter there.

He's not gone to lefties in the past before because he was scared of a pitching change (although then you pinch hit someone else.) He's also done the "not put in a LOOGY because I'm afraid there will be a righty pinch hitter" deal.

Takahashi struggled a little through the 6th and did look tired. Probably fine to quit while ahead there, particularly with a not-really-fully stretched out reliever. I was surprised Manuel was looking ahead enough to realize Castillo would get up, and remember that he has a foot issue (something he didn't do on Tuesday even though I expected it) and an extra inning or two or 3 couldn't hurt. That's probably why he used Cora.
