Middle-Reliever Swordfight: IGT 5/29, @ MIL

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
May 28 2010 09:11 PM

12:1 odds that, in the 7th, Jerry accidentally tries to sub Nieve in for Nieve.

Let it snow, and LGM.

Interesting choice of photo there.

Is that what's known as a "snow job"?

Re: Middle-Reliever Swordfight: IGT 5/29, @ MIL

It's my theory that the Mets are suffering roadinitis
due to the large number of games they played at home in April.

That is my theory,
and that is what it is..

..and it is MINE.

I do believe these things will balance out.

Hopefully starting tonight.

Another damn uniform (negro leagues?) brought to you by the MLB marketing department. I wish each team had a "home" and a "road" uniform with no alternates or exceptions.

happen to like the NY Cuban uniforms they're sportin' tonight

You know what sucks? Assuming an 8pm start* and turning it on to see Nieve had coughed up 4 in the first inning; then finding out there were 2 out and nobody on before it all started. Key-riced.

Good thing: It's early.

Cripes.
Jerry gave you another inning to settle down...
Nieve does not help his case to be a starter.

Yea, lets see what Ollie can do.
Can't be any worse, unless you consider
walking the runners around the bases worse.

Re: Middle-Reliever Swordfight: IGT 5/29, @ MIL

I was out running errands. Just came back and sat down to read the IGT to see how the boys are doing. Pretty damn depressing. Every time you think this team is starting to play well and about to turn the corner, they go on the road and suddenly play like crap.

GMJ has been absolutely horrible this season. There has to be someone that can swing a bat off the bench and be able to do a respectable job in CF on the rare occasion Pagan hasn't been in there.

I know I have told this story before on the forum, but what the hell. I was one out from seeing a perfect game once. The Tigers were taking it to the White Sox at Comiskey Park. Milt Wilcox was perfect through 8 and the White Sox fans had turned on their team and were cheering every Wilcox pitch like it was the post season. Every strike or out elicited great cheers and every pitch called a ball drew boos. Wilcox retired the first hitter easily enough which left only 2 outs to go. The White Sox sent Mike Squires up as a pinch hitter and he almost worked a walk before being retired to the approving applause of the crowd. Then the White Sox sent their pinch hitter deluxe, Jerry Hairston up so he could hear his home fans boo him. Hairston smacked the first pitch up the middle for a clean single and the boos rained down on him even louder than when he was announced. Wilcox promptly retired the next batter and received a well deserved standing ovation.

Brewers closer John Axford has a serious moustache.

Nieve..
46 pitches in the 1st inning.
Lasts two. 5 runs.

Perez..
Couldn't get any more rested than him.
2 innings.
3 runs.

Maybe Jerry will get all
Rumsfeldian in the post show.
That would be funny.
And I [u:22ewgdhz]WILL[/u:22ewgdhz] laugh.

I need to laugh...

When are they gonna solve the Ollie Perez situation? He's wasting valuable roster space and shouldn't be pitching. Down by three after two innings is not garbage time ... it's still a salvageable game there.

Good thing the Brewers bullpen sucks, huh?

I think the Mets are waiting for Trailways to have a two for one sales event so they cane ship Matthews and Perez to Buffalo cheaply. At least that's the dream I keep holding out for.

Agreed.
And this game they are playing cause he refused to go down...
we are losing that too.

Now that I think of it, Ollie is being used as a garbage time pitcher. When Ollie's done, it's garbage time.

Ollie and GMJ really exposed tonight.

They could release both of them. Jesus Feliciano is killing it at AAA Buffalo, plays CF, and is 30 years old. Its not like they have to keep him around for more seasoning.

I didn't realize Feliciano was that old, why not give him a try? GMJ has proved useless

Because he's not a major-leaguer.

Because they won't call him up, preferring to stick Landshark/Pro Player/Joe Robbie Stadium bags of Soilmaster on the roster, because it's got "major-league experience."

Because he's not a major-leaguer.

Because they won't call him up.

Because he's not a major-leaguer.

Because they won't call him up.

On another note... man, I'm like the Zach Greinke of IGTs. (Minus, you know, actually being good.)

How much is Perez makin?
36m?

I could see the Post headline:

OLIVER MAD-OFF

that works on a few levels.

Bases loaded, early in the game and we need a hit to put us back in it. We're hitting for the pitcher. LHP for the Brewers so I'm fine with not using Carter or Cora. If only there was a RHB somewhere on the bench...hmm...hmm...why not Tatis?

Matthews cannot be used in that spot. He must be cut immediately.

Jerry, as quoted by Adam Rubin:

“In the course of a game, you never really know what run is going to beat you, or what runs you’re going to need to get at what time,” Manuel said. “But you basically try to save a guy that you think has a good matchup for a guy later. I mean, he’s a switch-hitter. We had the bases loaded and felt that he has a little pop right-handed. We felt we might just take a shot at it.

In other words, he knowingly put up a weaker PH to save a better PH for later. I get it but they were down by a lot and you don't know if a similar situation will arise later (it didn't). At least he didn't say he didn't want to use his emergency catcher too early.

I was expecting him to say this.

The real answer is just as stupid, but in a much subtler way. A connoisseur's brand of stupid.

Speaking of middle-relievers, Pedro Feliciano leads all Major League pitchers in appearances with 29. Fernando Nieve is second with 28. Only one other pitcher has 27 appearances (Masset, Reds); several are tied for 4th place with 26 appearances.
