Newsday Chat with Lennon

David Lennon: Just got in from DC about 30 minutes ago. Fire away with some question for what I like to call this "speed round" of Mets chat.

Tom: ]
Jennry Mejia going down to the minors soon? Friday May 21, 2010 1:18 Tom

1:18 [Comment From David D David D: ]
When Igarashi comes back today/tomorrow, are they sending down Mejia?

David Lennon: Maybe not yet. I predict Maine goes on DL to make room for Igarashi. The Mets bullpen needs arms at the moment. But in sorting out the rotation, Mejia needs to go down to get stretched out at some point, so he can possibly return as a starter sooner rather than later.

Seriously, what the heck is going on with Maine?

David Lennon: I'm sure his shoulder has been bothering him for a while now. One scout I talked to last night said he's looked hurt since spring training. That would explain the lack of velocity. Maine just didn't want to admit it. I can understand where he's coming from, but at some point, he's hurting the team, too, and that's where Manuel and Warthen drew the line last night.

If they get swept will Jerry get the boot despite losing 3/5 of his rotation this week?

David Lennon: No. A sweep by the Yankees won't get Jerry fired. But back-to-back sweeps by Yanks and Phils might do the trick before the Mets head to Milwaukee - and a reunion with Manuel's old pal, Willie Randolph.

Beth:
By sending down Mejia they are going to ruin him like the Y's did to Joba

David Lennon: To answer David's question, the Mets are headed for 6-game trip to Milwaukee and San Diego after Philly series, so we could see a Randolph redux, hopefully not at 3:14 a.m. As for Mejia, he's only 20, so he'll be fine. After this season, he can be a starter during the winter leagues, too.

what do u think of dan's comments about maine being a liar?

David Lennon: Not to sound like Warthen's apologist, but he meant in an injury sense, as a competitor. He likes Maine - but neither he nor Jerry can tolerate a player not being honest about being hurt. Especially a starting pitcher

Personally I think David Wright is the most overrated player in baseball. I never saw a worse hitter with two outs and runners in scoring position. I say trade him for Evan Longoria or Ryan Zimmerman if those teams are stupid enough to do it

David Lennon: Not gonna happen. And David Wright is not overrated. Check the numbers and see where they compare. Don't get hung up on the strikeouts. Now defensively, that's another story. He's certainly an overrated defensive player.

Mike: ]
What do you think Takahasi does tonight?

David Lennon: 6 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 5 SO, 2 BB ... Leaves with Mets ahead, 5-1. Gets win.

Poppy: ]
Dave, what''s you take on Jason Bay...it's seems that he was more suited for Fenway then Citi Field.

David Lennon: Bay boggles my mind. I really have no explanation for him. Maybe the three hits yesterday can be a springboard, to use a cliche. I have no idea where the power has gone - he's not even coming close to hitting HRs.

rcoolc: ]
Is Nieve falling apart or being abused?

David Lennon: Defintely tired, no question about that. But it's Nieve we're talking about, too. he had a great start, but things tend to level out with a player of his caliber.

What about GMJ? Can't we get rid of him already & bring Hessman up? He's been raking ALL spring!

David Lennon: Hessman doesn't play CF. That's the only reason GMJ is on the roster. The Mets don't have another option.

Since the Mets still owe Perez $20M, it appears they are stuck with him or is there a possibility they can include him in a trade and eat a lot of his salary ?

David Lennon: Mets are stuck with Perez. There's no escape for them on that contract. Maybe during the winter

David, I have never been a fan of Warthen's. Even if what he said is true, isn't it terrible player/public relations to call Maine out like that? More importantly, I don't think he's good! What single pitcher has thrived under him?

David Lennon: Warthen is on shaky ground, no doubt about that. But he's made great strides with Pelfrey, so that's worth something.

David Lennon: Folks, gotta run. Got one more question?

Lamest chat ever , thanks James fucking Dolan

Matt:
Do you ever get tired of asking/answering questions about Jerry's firing?

David Lennon: Answering questions about a manager's job status is what I do in covering the Mets - I've covered three manger firings since 2002. Here's how it will shake out if Manuel gets fired: Melvin interim this year, followed by Backman geting a shot in 2011.

He was just going off my post from yesterday which said the same thing

You know the Mets.

They'll name a caretaker like Bob Melvin and then make a show of interviewing lots of candidates after the year as if to prove they'd learned the lesson that interim managers should never be re-hired, finally settling on the Biggest Name available at their price, which would be Valentine if they have the $$ or Backman if the Cyclones win the NY Penn League.

Right. Can't be more than 20 or 30 nudniks here prepared to throw it back in your face.

It takes a sweep by the MFY's and Philly to axe Manuel ? Wilpon is either obtuse or has the patience of Job.
