Tragic. He was only 37 years old.

Oh jeeeeez, this is sad. He was one of the personalities that make this game so much more entertaining beyond the outcome on the field.

That's two members of the 1999 Astros dead.

Two members of the 2006 Mets, too. Geremi Gonzalez, who briefly followed Jose Lima in the rotation that May, died almost exactly two years ago.

Was not effective as a Met, I think it's fair to say, but he seemed to love being here and I appreciated that.

Re: Jose Lima, RIP

I remember watching him from not too far away before a game at Shea (still with the Astros) with his glove on his head working the left field line from bullpen to dugout signing autographs and yapping along the way.
Looked like he was having a great time and completely in his element.

If I'm Dave Williams or Alay Soler, I'm looking over my shoulder a little bit.

A shame. He'll be missed.

He had been pitching for A Boy Named Seo's local Long Beach Armada, and had planned (at some point, anyhow) on getting a singing career off the ground.

Five children.

Lima last donned a major league jersey with the Mets, and former first baseman Keith Hernandez said it was an honor to know Lima wore his No. 17.

"Lima was one of the most charismatic figures in baseball," Hernandez said. "It is a tragedy that he passed away so early in life."

I've met Jose many times. He was as great a guy in person as he seemed on television. He always kept it real with the fans. It was sad that he couldn't perform in NY the way he had before. He was easy to root for. It's a sad day for those who appreciate good people. Look out St. Peter, it's Lima Time!

I went to a game in Philadelphia in '06 and sat near the Mets dugout. I noticed the oversized personality of Lima and was impressed at how much fun he was having.

The wife listed in those reports is Dorca Astacio, different from the celebrated Melissa Lima.

His Met span: 17 days, 17.1 innings and a couple of memories that transcend his ERA.

The dudes who put out the excellent "Baseball Project" album give us the OK and sometimes weird-sounding "Lima Time".

"It's Lima Time somewhere in this world..."
