Tigers cut Dontrelle Willis

For $29 million, the team got 2 wins, 8 losses. He's been designated for assignment.

He might be a better emergency start option/long man to stash in the pen than Nieve or Perez.

Then again, so might a Juggs machine, an automatic road salter, or Roomba.

Does a Roomba suck as much as Oliver Perez?

My grandfather has maintained since his debut that Willis would be "a flash in the pan."

The Oliver Perez hostage situation has reached day 15. How's that wood chipper sounding now?

Maybe it's just perception, and I'm not going through the trouble of trying to check the numbers here on my phone, but I seem to remember him pretty much owning the Mets. Not that that's any reason to go signing him. Though he'd probably be a more useful bat off the bench than GMJ.

This was one of the craziest contracts ever - partly because he had already turned more unreliable than Ollie but mainly because he was still a ways away from FA meaning they didn't have to give it.
They dealt for him (and Cabrera) in the off-season (Dec '07) and THEN extended his deal two weeks later before he had even played a game for them.
I remember warning several here (Soupcan among them) that he was too risky to trade for but I had no idea he'd bomb this bad.

Too bad, he always seemed like a good guy to have around and I hope he hooks on somewhere (just not here).

I guess that term is open to interpretation but 4 very good seasons tells me he was wrong.

The guy the Tigers brought up when they DFA'd Willis - Max Scherzer, one of the players obtained in the off-season 3-way involving the Yanx & Snakes (the Granderson deal) - started yesterday and [u:11d122xa]K'd 14 in 5-2/3 IPs[/u:11d122xa] (0 ER, 2 H, 4 BB) so it's paying off already.

I remember when Dontrelle was at the top of my wish list for the Mets.

And in fantasy baseball?
OMG, complete games out the ass (that must have been painful).

Wonder if the amount of complete games was a factor.....
I won't believe this cause I think pitchers are way to pampered in their work these days.
I think all players are.

If you can show me incontrovertible proof that his complete game tally was a factor,
this will change my entire attitude towards all of what I consider pamperiness these days.

I loved this guy. Not only what he could do, but how he went about doing it.
Reminded me of Willie Mays in the sense that his joy of the game was written all over his face.

Willis for Perez. Do it, Omar.

Re: Tigers cut Dontrelle Willis

Never happen. Willis' contract is over at the end of this year, while Ollie's got one more. No way the Tigers are going to take that on.

Plus, once he's released, someone will sign him for the minimum salary and the Tigers will pay the rest -- like they did with Sheffield last season.

He pitched more innings against the Mets than any other team (by one out over the Phils) and he pitched more innings in Shea than any other stadium, save Dolphin Stadium. His ERA vs the Mets is about a run and a half under his career mark, and his ERA at Shea is a run under his ERA during his time with the Marlins, so, yeah, you remember correctly (sorry to use ERA, but I'm just doing a quick check while I should be doing other work).

I hope he's not done. Even though he was rough on the Mets, he's a guy I just always found myself rooting for.

Well, there you go, then. Rebuild Shea and sign him.

Re: Tigers cut Dontrelle Willis

I recall Dontrelle also knocking a grand slam (pitcher: Jose Lima) off the K-counter scoreboard above the Mets' bullpen in July 2006. I'd certainly pick him up off waivers.

D'Backs deal for Dontrelle, trading RHP Billy (no relation) Buckner to Detroit.
Snakes also get like $12 million bucks in the exchange.
