Piazza batting cleanup.

Zambrano allowed a HR, 2 singles, a SB and 2 runs thus far.

I disagreed a lot with Willie Randolph.

I was disappointed with Carlos Beltran.

But I think this is one of those Met teams I'll look back on with particular affinity.

I agree. I'm going to miss this season when it's gone.

So this is the end
Time to say good-bye
So this is the end

Where do we go
Where did all the time go
So where do we go
From here

So this is the end
Have you come to be my friend
Time to say good-bye
So this is the end
Will you stay until the end
So this is the end
We'll be coming back again

Introducing Piazza with some funk music.

Supposedly they're playing the same music he chose when he was first introduced back in 1998.

seawolf17
Oct 02 2005 01:34 PM

I'm going to pretend you're kidding, and that you didn't realize that was Hendrix. The biggest metalhead to hit major league baseball since Phil Lynott hit .288 for the Phillies in 1973, and he picked funk music for his first AB as a Met? I think not.

Edgy DC
Oct 02 2005 01:38 PM

I don't have a very good speaker maybe.

It's not like Hendrix didn't have the funk.

Fair point. My post sounds much dickier than I intended it to. I apologize.

Fran Healy on catching: "You know what? You want to add about five years onto your career, if you can hit, get away from home plate. (Catching, that is.)"

There's some truth there, I guess. But it's just as true that, if you can't hit much, catching can add five years. Look at Rick Cerone, Alberto Castillo, and... Fran Healy!

"Mullet" Zeile is in the house; they just tried to interview him, but Matt's microphone went out.

Not Zambrano's day.

Edgy DC
Oct 02 2005 02:07 PM

Just showed interviews with peeps about what they loved about Piazza.

This 50ish-year-old Columbian woman: "He should rehtire as a Met. I DON'T HWANT TO SEE HIM GO!" (weeping.)

Edgy DC

All this ceremony is really greasing the skids, by the way. I think that must bother him a little.

(Psst. Aaron. Groove one.)

seawolf17
Oct 02 2005 02:34 PM

Zambrano, despite sucking today, has 7 K's. His ball is really moving all over the place. If he could only harness that, I'd ask him to close in '06.

Edgy DC
Oct 02 2005 02:37 PM

Shouldna let him come to the plate.

First game of this series without a Korean starting on the mound for one of the teams, after Kim, Kim, and Seo.

A dive by Victor Diaz gives Cliff Cook a triple from a single.

Victor not helping Victor and Rocks go up 5-2.

seawolf17
Oct 02 2005 02:52 PM

Hey! Heath Bell! I remember the Mets used to have a guy with that name who used to pitch once in a while.

Edgy DC
Oct 02 2005 02:54 PM

I don't get something. At the end of the season, shouldn't a starter get pulled at the first sign of trouble? Why waste more than one at-bat keeping him in the game when (1) the team is behind, (2) he's not particularly effective, (2) the staff is extended by the expanded roster, and (4) nobody has to pitch tomorrow.

Anyhow, Zam's out now , with a 6-2 deficit.

I feel like I'm at the opera.
How many solos (soli?) can we see?
Can't anyone hit a homer (or any other kind of hit, for that matter) with someone on base?

Crap. Subtle balk called on Bell. Seven-three.

Don't just want Mike now. Need him.

Oct 02 2005 03:13 PM

I hate losing the last game of the year. Come on, fellas.

Edgy DC
Oct 02 2005 03:14 PM

Nine-three.

Almost un-Mike-able.

seawolf17
Oct 02 2005 03:17 PM

Well, at least Danny Graves is in the game now, in to face the hottest hitter in the NL in the second half. I guess Willie's not so much on the winning today.

seawolf17
Oct 02 2005 03:17 PM

And no sooner do I hit "submit" than Helton puts one into the Rockies bullpen. Sigh.

H

elton
omers!

Eleven- three.

seawolf17
Oct 02 2005 03:24 PM

That was a nice tribute.

Give him one more AB... and come on, Rockies... throw him a couple of BP fastballs, see how far he can hit it. Just for old times' sake.

Edgy DC
Oct 02 2005 03:33 PM

Willie, all wrong.

All wrong.

seawolf17

Horribly wrong. What an anticlimax, after all that. Jeez. Get the guy one more freaking AB.

That's almost as shocking as the season being extended by the Mike Glavine hit.

Willie on the post-game said he and Mike had talked about lifting him late in the game if it was out of reach, he wanted the fans to get that last chance to show the love.

MFS62
Oct 02 2005 04:29 PM

And Jake finishes with a BA over .300.
As they say, he was a triple shy of the cycle.

What else does this guy have to do to get serious considerationn for the 1B job next year? I hope they don't go out and get someone who just puts up similar stats (e.g.- Overbay) just for the sake of bringing in someone "experienced".

Question, the Giants have been on the WFAN all day, so did Gary and Howie get to do this game at all?

The game was broadcast on 1130 AM, the Bloomberg News station. I listened while I was in my car.

Didn't work out that way, though, did it?

Gave them a last chance to show their disappointment.

Yeah is was a curious move, Willie had a tough time explaing the reason for it, made some references about this is how he used Mike all year, he seemed to get a little edgy when talking about the move...he also siad that it was his plan to give Mike 2 or 3 AB's and lift him, except if it was a close game...certainly took everyone by surprise.

ScarletKnight41

The guy sitting next to me simply said, "Willie doesn't care about us."
