And so another season ends. Nobody really gives a rat's ass about the Rockies, but here's what you need to know about the series:
Higher Ground: Thu 9/29 COL (Kim) @ NYM (Glavine) Fri 9/30 COL (Kim) @ NYM (Benson) Sat 10/1 COL (Esposito) @ NYM (Seo) Sun 10/2 COL (Cook) @ NYM (Zambrano)
No, that's not a misprint. Tonight it's Sun-Woo Kim, former Expo, and tomorrow it's Byung-Hyun Kim, former Yankee-on-Arizona's-payroll.
Hotter Than The Sun: The Mets are 9-3 in their last twelve, and have won four straight series. Mike Jacobs has 4 HR and 9 RBI in his last ten games. Miguel Cairo hasn't sucked too badly lately. Hell, even Carlos Beltran has started to hit; he's hit in 26 of his last 31, hitting .299 over that span.
History In The Making: Mike Piazza has 396 career home runs. 398 would tie him with Dale Murphy for 43rd on the All-Time list. Al Kaline and Andres Galarraga are tied at 399. Jose Reyes has 59 SB, just seven behind Roger Cedeno's Mets-record 66. Reyes leads the NL with 679 AB, which ties him for 29th on the all-time AB/season list. The NL single-season record is 701, set in 1984 by an old Phillies second baseman whose name will not be spoken here. Reyes has also scored 99 runs. The last Met to score 100 was Edgardo Alfonzo in 2000 (109). David Wright has 42 doubles, just two behind Bernard Gilkey's Mets-record 44.
The Pride: Mike Piazza plays possibly his last game as a Met this weekend. Willie Randolph said he's going to try to get Mike in every game, so make a big sign, put on your faded PIAZZA 31 shirt, and get the hell out to Shea this weekend and show that guy how much you love him. A video tribute is planned for Sunday.
Lethal Combination: The Mets are the first team in history with two players age 22 or younger play at least 150 games at short and third: Wright (157) and Reyes (156) games. Cliff Floyd and David Wright both have 97 RBI. The last time the Mets had more than one 100-RBI man was 1999: Piazza (124), Ventura (120), and Alfonzo (108).
'Til The River Runs Dry: The Mets have stolen 152 bases this year, second in the majors to Anaheim (155). The club record is 157, set in 1987.
Time To Get Tough: At 80-78, the Mets need to split this series to guarantee their first season above .500 since 2001, when they finished 82-80. They won 94 games in 2000.
Loser: Braden Looper hasn't pitched since September 21, when he blew his eighth save of the year in Florida. Don't expect to see him this weekend either.
Welcome To The Party: The Mets need to average 77,720 fans per game in this series to top 3,000,000 fans this year.
