Well I have to say I'm excited about the unveiling of the 2005 Mets Schaefer Player of the Year and WILL send a six-pack of Schaefer to winner. We should also issue a press release and subsequently get into hot water with Schaefer's corporate lawyers. It will be the greatest publicity stunt in the history of the CPF. I honestly have no idea who the player will be, since I never look at YSG's subtotals and usually just glance at my fellow posters figures. I mean, I know it'll be either Cliff, Wright or Pedro, just not sure who. If you know don't tell me. Anyhow, Gary & Howie yesterday named Jacobs the "Nikon camera player of the game" and said, as they always do, that the player named most often will be named the Mets Nikon Player of the Year and a donation will be made to his favorite charity. Gary said that Howie would have the announcement in a moment, then I got distracted and never heard who it was. Anyone hear who it was?

I like this end of the year stuff, I'm looking forward to taking part in the 2005 player rankings debates. I'm sadly anticipating a winter of relatively little activity on the CPF, since obviously baseball will be over and no one here seems to really be into hot-stove bullshit.

This place is pretty lively year-round, Elster. When the hot stove is all that there is, that's what we talk about.

I love Hot Stove season. I once wrote an essay for a Creative Writing class about how much I love the Hot Stove. I'll be yakking it up all winter.

It will be the greatest publicity stunt in the history of the CPF. I love this idea. I also think it's kinda cool that Johnny's been ignoring my updates throughout the season. (I'd be terribly discouraged if everybody was ignoring them, but I don't think that's the case.) Maybe I'll include a little recap of the Schaefer race as a prelude to the announcement. I won't spoil anything for Johnny and any others who have kept themselves in the dark, but the race has had its back and forths. At one point, I think in August, only 0.01 points separated the players in first and second place.

Your recollection is correct. I remember the 0.01 difference vividly. The recap idea is great. We should also list our Players of the Month in the press release, plus the Schaefer Rookie of the Year.

I'll prepare a release, but before I can I need details on the original and a magic quote from the cpf administrator over why we did this. When did the original Scheafer POTG run? Any details?

I remember searching in Google a few months ago for any mention of the Schaefer Mets Player of the Year award, and the only results I got were links to CPF posts. I'm pretty sure that the award was given during the 1970's. I remember guys like Rusty Staub and Jerry Koosman getting votes. I might even remember them as past winners, which would probably mean 1975 and 1976. Maybe thumbing through old yearbooks or scorecards would find some mention of the award, probably in a Schaefer print ad. I also seem to remember that Schaefer stopped sponsoring the award and some other company, not a beer, picked it up for a year or two. But I'm not sure of that, nor of who that company might have been. Maybe a camera/film company like Kodak? As to why we're doing this, the best answer is that we're all crazy. POTG voting predates my time on this forum, and I've been around since 2002. I brought up Schaefer voting as an alternative to the previously established method during the 2004 season, and submitted a few Schaefer style votes in the existing poll threads. It never caught on, mainly because I couldn't think of a good way to get everyone's consensus. I thought of Schaefer again when polling began for the first game of the 2005 season, and this time I was able to see a relatively easy way to tally and assemble individual votes. So I created my magic spreadsheet and the rest is history. We were running parallel polls for a while there, but somehow the original style polls stopped after we moved from ezBoard. Will we do this again in 2006? I'm willing if everyone else is. I do like the nostalgic aspect of it. We're casting votes using pretty much the same rules that Ralph, Lindsey, and Bob did three decades ago.

It quickly became obvious that, if we were to tally the winners for a year-end honor, steady contributors and consistent runners-up would be disadvantaged. One of our posters --- his name was Wide BeeGee, a pun on YGB, the abbreviation for "Ya Gotta Believe --- recalled Lindsey Nelson awarding the Schaefer Player of the Game back in the seventies. Lindsey would give up to a total of ten points to several featured contributors, with nobody getting more than six points. We elected to revive this fine tradtion, but always awarding ten total points every game. (Oh, the controversy of squeezing ten points out of bad games and ten points into good ones!) A lot of work by a lot of good people went into this award, and we're all very proud of Cliff/David/Pedro and hope his success continues as long as the great Schaefer brewing tradition. The fact is, before this, every honor to recognize the outstanding Mets player in a given year was systemically challenged. Oh, they often got the right guy, but usually for the wrong reason. Cliff/David Pedro is most certainly the right guy. He can be assured. Special thanks also go to our accountants at the Ultimate Mets Database for tabulating the points throughout the year."

Actually, I think it was YSG, not YGB, who suggested reviving the Schaefer award. But if the "Ya Gotta Believe" connection looks better in the press release, then I won't quibble.

Jerry Koosman had come from way behind to win it by one point (86 to 85 sticks out in my memory) over Dave Kingman because Dave Kingman was out for several weeks in the middle of summer. Schaefer had taken over for Rheingold after 1973. Before that, they were the Yankee beer and Rheingold was the Met beer. Later we were sponsored by the Cardinal beer. Has anything been quite right since Rheingold was in its prime?

Uh, I was re-thinking this. What we really should do is make a donation to David Wright's new charity (I was gonna suggest a team-project for the holiday exchange this year before Seo started it up). There's still time for that, and maybe that helps temper the stupidity of it all.
