Exclusive inside sources tell this reporter that while Al Goldis and Fred Wilpon spent a recent weekend breaking the fingers of some of the team's brightest pitching prospects, Omar Minaya was on the phone with an unnamed general manager, threatening to trade them all for an unnamed veteran middle reliever. Such front-office hijinks, sources warned, will undoubtedly comdemn the franchise for years, particularly as it attempts to overcome the embarrasment of having signed Moises Alou to a two-year contract last winter, only to watch in silent horror as a consortium consisting of his agent, his father, and Al Goldis set fire to the original document and whisked Alou off to San Francisco in the dead of night. You read it here first: New players will be acquired, and others swapped away, this winter in a series of trades and free agent signings reaching a pitch at the winter meetings. In other news, a disgruntled Met front-office employee was found dead with a cell-phone in his hand and a canary stuffed in his mouth. Sources suspect Al Goldis.

Add a top flight closer and possibly a setup man _ and don't forget a lefty specialist _ to Mets general manager Omar Minaya's offseason shopping list this offseason. Mets fans should not kid themselves. The only way to bring in All-Star caliber talent, the kind of players Omar loves to collect, is to part with the Petits, the Bannisters and Milledges of the world. Billy Wagner is a FA as you know, so he'll cost money, isn't BJ Ryan a FA?,are there any top of the range clean up hitters available via a trade?, lefty specialists should come form what we have already I would think, certainly Omar shouldn't be giving up anything of value for one, the Angels don't have one.

That's bad sentence formation in saying "Omar Minaya's offseason shopping list this offseason." Take the first "offseason" out. And by the way, it is a general rule that successful teams develop their own talent. We're not going to become the Yankees, or the 2002 Mets, for that matter. We learned our lesson the hard way.

This scneario may ultimately prove to be true (Breaking News: Omar Minaya Likes to Have All-Stars on His Team), but, as pointed out, trading prospects is certainly not the only way to fetch All Stars. The Mientkiewicz deal approaches that characterization somewhat, but it was a borderline prospect for a borderline vet, not a blue-chip for an All-Star. (The deal broke poorly on both ends.) Phillips for Ishii was a younger guy for a more established guy, but both teams were plugging holes, and neither was working to serve youth at the expense of experience. I guess one can say that the team has traded not-yet-drafted prospects by signing Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran. But they get some picks back by not re-signing Al Leiter, don't they? Anyhow, we'll see.

What I was trying to accomplish re: Minaya was this: Already I am seeing on the Manny?Soriano talk on internet boards, and I'm seeing proposals like Trax and Heilman for blank. If the Mets do indeed intend to "win" next year (which they will, Pedro in the 2nd year of his deal, Glavine and Floyd in their walk years?) it will be expensive: Closer (likely a free agent...Wagner or Ryan, range 8-10 million a year) Power hitting OF (likely a trade, which will likely cost Petit/Bannister, Milledge and another player if we're talking Manny) Another bat (probably will go fater Delgado and/or Soriano, wghich will require a trade, see above prospects or whoever is left) That still leaves catcher. Everyone says Ramon Hernandez or Benji Molina, but don't think for one second that Omar isn't thinking Pudge. If he voids out of the last two years of his deal with the Tigers, he may just come here for less than he's owed (if Omar adds a year), or Detroit could "dump" his salary (2 years 20 million) on NY.... Looks pretty pricey to me...and worth it if you get the right players, not so much if you don't...

NOt looking like my kind of off-season at all. I'd be happier to see them pursue outfield depth than to pursue Manny Ramirez.

Internet fans lusting after every player who's not here is a predictable knee-jerk response, even more than the one where they scheme to get rid of every player who is. The fun part is listening to them drool after Manny or Soriano as the next sentence demands a team built around pitching and defense and "kids".

Adam Rubin in the Daily News stokes the hot stove...in a big way... in regrads to second base... ]SECOND BASE: Matsui is owed $8 million in the final year of his contract and has a no-trade clause to all but the Angels, Dodgers and Yankees. He indicated he intends to fulfill the deal rather than return to Japan. Still, the Mets figure to try to upgrade, even if it means eating a sizable chunk of Matsui's contract. One intriguing possibility: Braves shortstop Rafael Furcal, a free agent after the postseason, has purportedly let it be known he would be willing to play second base in Flushing. That guy makes a pretty good analogy: When baseball was struck and then split into two mini-seasons in 1981, we first heard the term division series on the big league level. It was a one-shot intended to settle things that had trickled out of control. Crazy stunt in retrospect. For example, the Cincinnati Reds had the best record in baseball, but didn't get to play in the post-season. The Kansas City Royals finished under .500 but were christened the A.L. West's second-half champ. That October was to these Octobers what Leif Ericson is to Christopher Columbus. Sure, maybe it happened, but nothing came of it, so it's all but forgotten. (Or have you been to many Ericson Day sales of late?)

Odd sentence using the word purportedly* where you'd expect to see reportedly. (*-to give appearance, often falsely, of being intending...) Clever leveraging of the moneyed team has begun.
