November ? - Free Agency Period begins 15 days after the conclusion of the World Series. Players may only discuss financial terms with their own teams before this point.

December 5-8 - Winter Meetings in Dallas

December 7 - Final day for clubs to offer potential free-agent players arbitration. Not offering prevents receiving FA compensation for that player.

December 19 - Final day for players to accept offered arbitration. If a player accepts then he is considered signed (terms to be worked out).

December 20 - Non-Tender deadline. Final day to offer contracts to unsigned (non arb eligible) players.

January 5-15 - Salary arbitration filing period. Eligible players can file during this time.

January 8 - Final day (until May 1st) for FAs who rejected an arbitration offer to re-sign with their old team.

January 18 - Arbitration figures exchanged

February 1-21 - Salary arbitration hearings.

Re: Fall-Winter Calendar

the REVISED offseason schedule to be anounced next week after the yankees are out of the playoffs:

November ? - Free Agency Period begins
November ? +1 - Steinbrenner signs top free agent pitcher
November ? +2 - Steinbrenner signs 2nd best free agent pitcher

December 5-8 - Winter Meetings in Dallas
December 6th- Steinbrenner trades Robinson Cano and Chin Wang for Andruw Jones to play CF for the yankees. anounces need for new 2B

December 9th- Steinbrenner trades ptbnl + lots and lots of cash for Alfonzo Soriano.

Mets offseason checklist/schedule:
November:
-make embarrasingly lowball offer to mike piazza, anounce intention not to resign him.
- sign ramon hernandez for 3 times the next highest offer, hey he's hispanic!

December:
- quietly deal Looper and winter meetings for minor leaguers.
- watch as Billy Wagner and BJ Ryan sign elsewhere for very reasonable amounts of money, claiming that our youngsters are ready to step up in the bullpen (these same youngsters will thenbe demoted in march in favor of veteran scrubs)
- watch Konerko sign elsewhere with the mantra "don't wory, we'll trade for Manny"

January:
- Manny trade falls apart, mets PR people say not to worry, that Beltran's bounce back year will win the Mets 10 extra games.
- Mets deal Matsui to Detroit for ptbnl.

March:
- Mets enter spring training with the slogan "addition by subtraction mean playoffs now"

So I guess this means that the FA period commences on or about November 10th*

* except of course for when Torre puts in a "friendly" call to BJ Ryan, explaining that he can't discuss money with him but that he can think of at least 27 million reasons why he should be a Yanqui for the next 3 years.

Giuliani and Billy Crystal will, of course, make similar calls.

Well yeah, neither one of them are MLB or NYY employees.

In fact, they're not only allowed to contact him but can do so while carrying bags of unmarked bills in large denominations.

Starting today through Friday is the General managers meetings in Indian Wells. Omar and his crew will be big pimping.

And Thursday, November 10, if my math is right, will be 15 days after the end of the World Series. That would mark the date when the Mets could begin dangling money in front of Wagner, Furcal, Konerko, and whoever else they may lust for.

I'm not expecting any major deals to be announced at this week's meetings. But, as the sportswriters usually say, the GMs will be "laying the groundwork for future deals that will be announced at the Winter Meetings in December". This might be the only cliche about the GMs as a group.
Can anyone think of others?
