Poker Game Hosting Protocol Question

D-Dad hosted a poker game at our home this afternoon (I was supposed to be out of town, but the plans were cancelled due to Hurricane Katrina). During the cleanup process, I noticed a jar with money in it. I asked him about it, and D-Dad said that it was for contributions to offset the cost of food.

I was aghast. "You asked guests in our home for contributions toward the food?!?!?!"

He said that it was standard protocol.

He did prepare a nice spread - burgers, dogs, brats, grilled onions and peppers, beer, other drinks, etc.

But still, it just seems wrong to me to ask people in our home to contribute toward the food. We're Jewish - we're supposed to feed people!

Is he right? Is this standard for poker parties?

I've heard of money put aside for a "sunshine fund" - in men's poker and other games to buy tickets to ballgames, etc - and in women's mah jong or card games to accrue for theater tickets, etc or even for charities..

But for food?
In a Jewish house?
A shonda.

You can play Mah Jong without a computer?

I can't play Mah Jong at all.

I got myself out of the house during the poker game. I only discovered the jar during the clean-up process.

Poker is a strange game. I'd say chipping in for food is OK - means they don't want to be a burden on you for this male bonding ritual.

I didn't know it can be played WITH a computer.
And no sexism here - it has been played in China, by men, as a heavy gambling game for probably two thousand years. I guess it was the equivalent of a male bonding poker game before the invention of playing cards.

Except for the whole religion thing the Jewish/Irish similarity scores are alarming.

Here's one:

I used to have some really nice mah jong software with different tiles, layouts, pretty oriental music, and a cute noise if you picked two tiles that didn't match, but it didn't work with our new computer.

62, I knew that; I've always admired the idea that someone would take the time to lay out all those tiles by hand.

If that doesn't load with "New Game" in the options, hit refresh

I've played in many regular poker games (tho not at the moment).

If the game is in a dedicated house then people should pay for their own food. If it's a floating game, then the house supplies. Beer is brought by players.

That being said, I don't charge for food (tho' takeout is pretty normal).
