Why I'll be a Met Fan's Uncle!

Coincidentially my niece/newphew is scheduled to make his/her debut around the same time as Seawolf18 in Feb of 2006!

My brother-in-law is just a causal baseball (and really all sports) observer and my sister is not a sports fan at all, I'll give you a funny sidebar about her lack of sports fan acumen later, so as I told them, I will do everything within my power to make their child a fan of the New York Metropolitans!

The story, they both went to college in Boston, my sis to BC my brother-in-law (then future brother-in-law) went to BU, with my cousin (coincidentially a cousin who probably has alot to do with me being a Met fan, but thats a different tale) and they both played football.

As the courtship really started (he's about 3 years older) she would go to BU games despite all the big games playing at Chestnut Hill that same day (BU was a powerhouse D2 school, and of course BC was in the Big East and playing ranked teams most weeks) At first my sister's future mother-in-law thought A) she was into small school football or B) was really a big supporter of her big cousin. Course it was more in support of her future hubby, oh and the free tailgating paid for by her aunt and uncle, and the postgame spreads!

Both of my sisters married non-baseball guys (and southerners to boot) but the oldest nephew - a 9 y/o living in Virginia - has recently decided to follow his contingent of NY uncles into Met fandom.
Who knows, maybe it was the official pajamas he was given as an infant? But it's never too early to start.

When my sister's son was born a few years ago, her husband's uncle sent him a little Yankees outfit.

She was sufficiently horrified, and she donated it to a clothing drive.

When my son was born, a friend sent him a similar Miami Dolphins outfit. I don't have any feelings at all for the Dolphins, positive or negative, so we let him wear it as part of his wardrobe rotation. It had no affect on him. Now almost nine, he's a mild Mets fan. Will watch an inning or two on TV and knows the names of the star players. Maybe a post season appearance in 2006 will tilt him into full fandom, but I'm not so sure.

He's inherited my love of superhero comics more than he has my love of baseball.

I'm not so sure. Why are we so cruel to the needy?
