Gonna be an interesting day at the ol' ballyard. Wind, thunderstorms, maybe some hail! It's a good thing Citifield is a tolerable place to spend a rain delay, because that's where I'll be.

What, you don't miss cramming into tiny concourses and spilling out into the ramps and barely being able to walk around and vendors still pushing big carts of garbage through?

Heh. I don't remember experiencing too many rain delays at Shea. I must have been through a few of them, but maybe my brain is repressing those terrible memories.

The one that sticks in my head the most (and I feel a separate thread coming on) is one of the last ones, when they played the Texas Rangers (I think it led to the last "real" doubleheader at Shea actually) The day was fine, Nathan's doing it's hot dog eating contest outside before hand, but by the time the game came, rain. Rangers played slip and slide on the tarp (I actually have a youtube video upload of it somewhere) and people behind me were criticizing the Mets for not going out there and sliding. Then the rain and lightning got much worse and they strongly encouraged us all to leave the stands. And we grabbed a little corner behind a beer stand for ourselves. I think it was a giveaway day too, possibly the Shea replica one.

Like the move here by Jerry, giving the aging Tejada a rest to shake up a lineup that hasn't produced the last couple of days.

Looks like Wright woulda been out by a mile and is held at third on Frenchy double. Cora then walks, and Tak K's to end the inning. Booth sorta on Hale's ass for not sending him, but if Wright's out by 10 feet, who gives a crap what the situation is?

Extra Innings has the Marlins feed and their text poll is: "What is your favorite Marlins moment vs. the Mets? Eliminating the Mets in 07; Eliminating the Mets in 08; JJ over Santana; 4 game sweep in '10." B, C, and D are within a point or two of each other with A way behind.

Grrrr.

My friends and family think I am now officially insane.

Sorry, gotta go,Met game on TV!
Still took awhile to gracefully slip away.

If a cop tried to pull me over for speeding I would have eluded him until I was in front of this TV set.
It's a fact!

I heard some dings about that pesky Uggla.
I heard some dings.

Got to see that business with the kid, the man, the son, and the foul ball.

So if a replay rule is instated in baseball I guess we're spending that last half-inning reviewing:
- whether Hanley was still on the base when receiving the flip on the DP
- whether Pagan was safe at 1st on the back end of the DP
- and whether Pagan was then safe at 2nd on his steal attempt

Nope.
Only one play can be reviewed per game.
And if the manager wastes it he gets a bat shoved up his ass.

Which was pretty much my point there.
Once you decide to take the leap into replay, trying to do so on a limited basis (like virtually every suggestion proposes) is like trying to stay only somewhat pregnant. Also replay rules always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS work smoother in theory than they do in practice.

Re: IGT Sunday June 6th Mets/Marlins

Nice day all around.
Not just a comeback from 5-0 but we pick up a game on the entire NL East

- Marlins give up a 5 run lead to Mets

- Nats lost in the 10th to Cincy after Matt Capps gives up 3 in the 9th. Nats actually score twice in their 9th to tie but can't protect it.

- Phils come back from a 3-0 deficit v San Diego but leave 14 on base and lose it in the 10th

- Braves lose to the Dodgers on a walk-off single in the 11th

Re: IGT Sunday June 6th Mets/Marlins

NYT giving Manuel some positive press.

In the Mets’ 7-6 victory over the Florida Marlins on Sunday, Manuel’s positive outlook was cited as one of the reasons for a triumph that extended their home winning streak to eight games. Manuel has faced some withering criticism this season, but he has also provided some evidence of a job well done, and players were quick to note how Sunday offered a strong case.

I'm largely in agreement with the 'pool's assessment of Manuel's field managing decisions - too much bunting (though I'm fine with bunts in some situations), too quick of a hook, and too much Cora too early in the batting order - but I often wonder if the reason why we think he's so bad is that we don't get to see how bad other managers can be at times.

Re: IGT Sunday June 6th Mets/Marlins

It seems Jerry Manuel has a clear doghouse and that it's a lousy place to be. I'm curious to know what effect it has on team morale. On one hand, such a situation can erode morale if a large group of players feel vulnerable to ending up there themselves. On the other hand, it can boost morale if the players feel his doghouse protects the team from being undone by players who are hurting the team's efforts.

Re: IGT Sunday June 6th Mets/Marlins

I guess it's possible that Jerry's a manager of average ability, compared to the rest of the 2010 guys. But even if that's the case, I'd take little comfort from that. I don't want a guy who's equally as bad as everyone else. I want a smart guy who'll be able to give the Mets an edge wherever possible.

Re: IGT Sunday June 6th Mets/Marlins

I don't expect a manger to "win" games as much as not lose them. Only a really exceptional guy like Valentine got you a win or two over the course of the year, mainly because he was not going to be out-managed by the opposition. I think its easy to beat a Jerry led team when you have the advantage of last licks.

Francoeur's HR elicited the loudest watching-TV cheer from me all year long. Very positive.

Yabbut, any such credit has to be weighed against any negative ramifications of having left Francoeur in the lineup when he was doing so poorly. I don't know if it's a wash or if Jerry comes out on top. (I will concede that this very close to nitpicking).

Well, with six days of June measured against a turd of a month in May, it's certainly no wash yet, which is why I'm only giving out tablespoons of credit. Long-term benefits will only, naturally, be visible in the long term.
