Goofy Orioles fans

From the Post...

The Mets retrieved Carter's ball yesterday. On Friday, the fan who caught Carter's first home run rejected an offer of autographed baseballs from David Wright, Jose Reyes and Francisco Rodriguez and an autographed bat from Carter in exchange for the ball. The fan also wanted signed items from the Orioles, and the Mets declined to pursue the matter.

...Goodness. That's a pretty good trade. I'd give it over for a chance to shake Carter's hand, much less all that cool stuff.

Adam the Bull* was talking about this after the game. I guess he was an Orioles fan and the Orioles didn't want to play ball?

Ditto.
The last two celebs I have met up close and personal, that's exactly what I did.
Shook their hand.

I guess the mets didn't ask the O's.... but if you're an o's fan that could care less about the mets, and you were offered that, wouldn't you at least take it, and just ebay the stuff if you didn't really want it?

*shrug* baltimorons....

From what I read it's more like the Mets balked at the guy's increasing list of demands that had nothing to do with them (he wanted O's stuff) and told him to kiss off rather than become a middle-man in a negotiation between the fan and the O's.

I suppose if it were the other way around, and I was at Citi and caught a rook Orioles homer,
I would have to request he go get a Met player for me to shake hands with.

Re: Goofy Orioles fans

I think I'd want tickets.

. All players get tickets to games, so if say it's August 24 and that Florida rookie hit's his first home run into the Pepsi Porch and I catch it..sign me a bat or ball or something sure, but how about give me tickets to the next day's game? costs him nothing. Gets me free tickets to a Mets game, and in probably good seats.

Re: Goofy Orioles fans

And the one way to keep demands like this going up all the time is to bend over backwards and give the guy whatever he wants. At some point you just got to say no and walk away.
He's got his 2nd HR and he could have had his first but the fan prefers to keep it - either because he thought he could use it to pry anything he wanted out of two orgs or because he's convinced Carter is going to hit 500 in his career and he'll put his kid through college on the profits he'll reap from hanging onto the ball. Good luck with that dude.

My guess is that The Animal could have gone Louisville Slugger upside the guy's head and danced around his battered body as he took the ball. But that's why they send other people to retrieve stuff.

Mets thinking: "Well, we can go to the Orioles and ask them to help us me this greedy little shit's Danny Partridge demands, or we can just drop it and give Carter something to be angry about. Hmmm...."

Re: Goofy Orioles fans

John Stearns hit his first homer at Wrigley Field, apparently before the douchey "throw it back" code was enforced. Joe Piganatano got the attention of whoever caught it and offered to exchange him another ball. Guy asked for a bat. So he gave him a bat. A "how about..." one-upping negotiation doesn't seem too greedy or out of line. But screw the O's fan. Give Carter another ball, tell him it's home run and he'll just tear the cover off it anyway.

'Cause he's The Animal.

I'll be ok with this if Carter is able to retrieve his 500th home run ball with the Mets.
But there's always something special about your first.... (I just teed that one up for Fman)

All this brings to mind Coghlan's first homer last year, and the kerfuffle over that with "The Happy Youngster." (Gotta love self-given nicknames.)

Wait, did a 20 year old Puerto Rican woman who was the super hot sister of my high school friend catch this ball?

OK, just checking.
