France (Les Blues)

Various bookies have France at an astonishing 16/1 to win the World Cup , in a group they will ease through in my opinion that's great value....

=#FF0000]World Cup schedule

June 11: vs. Uruguay (Cape Town)
June 17: vs. Mexico (Polokwane)
June 22: vs. S. Africa (Bloemfontein)

FIRST ROUND OPPONENTS: Uruguay , Mexico, hosts South Africa

HEAD TO HEAD AGAINST URUGUAY

They've met five times, twice in the group stages of the World Cup. In 2002, they played to a 0-0 draw at South Korea, in 1966 Uruguay edged the French 2-1 in England. Their other meetings were friendlies. The most recent was in 2008, where the sides played to a 0-0 draw.

HEAD TO HEAD AGAINST MEXICO

5 Wins - 1 Draw & no Losses

Three of these games were at World Cups

France won 4-0 in the 1930 World Cup , beat them 3-2 at the 1954 Cup,then drew 1-1 in 1966 WC in England.

HEAD TO HEAD AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa have never beaten France , they were in the same group at the WC in France /1998 - France beat then 3-0 , a recent "friendly" saw a 0-0 draw in Jo'burg

Reasons to not believe in the French

They're French

Raymond Domenech - The manager is widely ridiculed as a buffoon , he's done after the WC .Laurent Blanc will replace him. Domenech has been known to choose players based on astrology , Robert Pires was dropped because Scorpios were not to be trusted.

Reasons to believe in the French

They are in a group they should ease through , they have some outstanding players, Hugo Lloris the goalie should become a star here, he was brilliant in qualifying. Anelka, Henry and Ribéry are all outstanding , Yoann Gourcuff for my money is the player to watch, he could put it all together here and become a Zidane type player.

They have a vastly experienced back line .

Goalkeepers Hugo Lloris (Lyon); Steve Mandanda (Marseille); Cédric Carrasso (Bordeaux)

Defenders: Bacary Sagna (Arsenal); Éric Abidal (Barcelona); Anthony Réveillère (Lyon); William Gallas (Arsenal); Marc Planus (Bordeaux); Patrice Evra (Manchester United); Sébastien Squillaci (Sevilla); Gaël Clichy (Arsenal)

Midfielders Franck Ribéry (Bayern Munich); Yoann Gourcuff (Bordeaux); Jérémy Toulalan (Lyon); Florent Malouda (Chelsea); Alou Diarra (Bordeaux); Abou Diaby (Arsenal); Mathieu Valbuena (Marseille);

Strikers Djibril Cissé (Panathinaikos); Sidney Govou (Lyon); André-Pierre Gignac (Toulouse); Thierry Henry (Barcelona); Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea)

I'm especially impressed that an Irish person can write about Henry and the French without profanities.

Re: 'Know Thy WCT" - FIFA World Soccer Ball Cup

South Africa - "Bafana Bafana"

The South African team is called Bafana Bafana. I don’t know what it means, but that’s a cool name. Their have been concerns across the soccer world that the venues might not be ready or up to World Cup standards, but with a week to go, it appears that all systems are go.

South Africa made the World Cup in 1998 (losing to eventual champion France, then drawing with Denmark and Saudi Arabia) and 2002 (beat Slovenia, lost to Spain, drew with Paraguay), but never got out of the first round.

As part of Group A with Mexico, Uruguay, and France (three teams ranked in the world top 17, per ESPN’s Soccer Power Index), little is expected of the home squad. That was especially true after the 2006 African Nations Cup, in which Bafana Bafana did not score s single goal. That led to the desire to hire a better coach, which led to Carlos Alberto Parreira. More on him later. In 2009 South Africa hosted the FIFA Confederations Cup, and finished in fourth place, beating New Zealand along the way.

Despite lowered expectations, the South Africans can hope that home cookin’ is to their advantage, as has been the case in recent World Cups. Since the US’s surprise run in 1994, each host country has made it out of the first round.

COACH

Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira leads his fifth different national team into the World Cup, following stints as the head man for Kuwait (1982), UAE (1990), Brazil (1994, 2006), and Saudi Arabia (1998). This equals Bora Milutinovic's record. He certainly hopes for results similar to 1994, when his Brazilians won, rather than 1998, when he was canned after two shutout losses. Once coached the MetroStars for a year.
Parreira on his team following Monday’s friendly 1-1 draw with Bulgaria: "This is the level that we will face at the World Cup. I doubt it will be higher than this. I was particularly impressed with the way we played in the first-half. This is a level of technique, organisation, possession, experience, set-pieces that we will face at the World Cup. We are imposing our style on the opponents and today it was very clear we are a team that can play our game against an experienced team. We faced a team that always had nine men behind the ball, but what I liked about our play is that we were never intimidated. It was not easy to penetrate, but I am happy with the situation because in games like this you are never going to create too many chances."

ROSTER

Best-known player (to the soccer world): Steven Pienaar, a midfielder who plies his trade for Everton. Expect the offense to run through him, as he can create and finish. His confidence is pretty high too. "I rate our chances of doing well in the tournament very high. In fact I am very confident that we will go further than the second round."

Best-known player you won’t see: Benni McCarthy. South Africa’s all-time scorer. Plays for West Ham, but his conditioning has been, uh, lacking a bit. So says South Africa trainer Francisco Gonzalez: “McCarthy's percentage body fat is high. And his physical state is inferior to the rest of his team. What's the point of having a player who isn't in a good physical condition and therefore useless to the coach?” and West Ham Chairman David Sullivan: “Benni McCarthy's body-fat measurement is 24.2 per cent. Mine is 25.4 per cent. Benni McCarthy is nearly as fat as me. I try to do aerobics in the morning but I'm 61 years old. He's the one West Ham player I want to go to the World Cup because he might come back fitter.” Ouch.

Best-known player (to non-soccer fan Americans): Matthew Booth, Defender. Big, tall, bald white guy…a bit of a trailblazer in that soccer is not normally considered a “white” sport in South Africa. Looks a bit like the lead singer of Midnight Oil, and has an impossibly hot wife, who is a model, athlete, and black. Big power couple in South Africa, recently featured in Sports Illustrated, hence why non-soccer fans may know him. Apparently, his play has dropped a bit, and he’s not a favorite of Pereira. Might not see a lot of action (at least on the pitch; I hope he’s seeing some at home).

Full Squad:
Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Moeneeb Josephs (Orlando Pirates), Shu-Aib Walters (Maritzburg United)
Defenders: Matthew Booth (Mamelodi Sundowns), Siboniso Gaxa (Mamelodi Sundowns), Bongani Khumalo (Supersport United), Tsepo Masilela (Maccabi Haifa), Aaron Mokoena (Portsmouth), Anele Ngcongca (Racing Genk), Siyabonga Sangweni (Golden Arrows), Lucas Thwala (Orlando Pirates)
Midfielders: Lance Davids (Ajax Cape Town), Kagisho Dikgacoi (Fulham), Thanduyise Khuboni (Golden Arrows), Reneilwe Letsholonyane (Kaizer Chiefs), Teko Modise (Orlando Pirates), Surprise Moriri (Mamelodi Sundowns), Steven Pienaar (Everton), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs), Macbeth Sibaya (Rubin Kazan)
Forwards: Katlego Mphela (Mamelodi Sundowns), Siyabonga Nomvete (Moroka Swallows), Bernard Parker (FC Twente)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?

Best –case scenario: Bafana Bafana takes advantage of the home crowd and maybe gets Mexico napping; karma catches up to France in their matchup and the South Africans sneak into the second round.

Worst-case: Like Parreira’s other non-Brazil WC teams, they struggle early, get tight, and don’t benefit from friendly officials and fans. It’ll be three and out.

Both outstanding. Bar set very high.

Lots of Arses on France, so I'll like watching em. Weird not seeing Viera on a French team. Funny about all that astrology shit. Didn't know that.

Rough draw for the Bafanarama's. Mexico looked sharp today kicking Italy's ass in a friendly. And poor, tubby Benni McCarthy.

Edit: took out the giant Benni McCarthy ass pic. Was creeping me out.

That was great Hahn, lots of great stuff in there, and how high is the coach if he thinks the standard they meet in the WC won't be higher than Bulgaria?

I was wondering about that myself. I sort of read between the lines that Bulgaria maybe was giving their best effort since they were not in the WC...and liked that his squad stood toe-to-toe with them in what was for them an exhibition.

I don't know what history says...do non-WC qualifying nations take these friendlies with WC squads more seriously

Mostly with Irish on this one... though I caught a bit of the Czech-U.S. friendly a week or two ago, and the Czechs were attacking the ball and making challenges like they were out for blood. (I'd be annoyed too, were I the Czechs, Irish or Russians and watching, say, Honduras or North Korea prepare for the tourney.)

Oh wow....

Didier Drogba is set to miss the World Cup with a suspected fractured elbow after he was forced off in a friendly against Japan today. Drogba had put his country 1-0 ahead with a free-kick in the 15th minute against Japan before going down following a challenge from the Japan defender Tulio – off whom Drogba's goal had deflected in – and he left the pitch in visible distress.

Didier Drogba, the Ivory Coast captain, will undergo an emergency operation today in an attempt to save his chances of participating in the World Cup. The striker was initially reported to have been ruled out of the tournament after dislocating his elbow in today'sfriendly against Japan but, according to the French sports newspaper L'Equipe, he will have surgery and could be fit for his country's opening match against Portugal in 10 days' time.

Why Uruguay Is The Greatest Nation On Earth
Known as La Celeste (“The Sky Blue”) or “Los Charrúas” – a term referring to indigenous people of Southeastern South America but used as a fighting term, the way the USA might use “Yanks.”

With a population of less than 4 million, Uruguay is one of the smallest nations to qualify and is dwarfed in size by its neighbors Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, but it can still play ball with them. Uruguay is known for having a strong economy, high literacy rate, good quality of life, progressive politics (when not overthrown by right-wing coup) and little corruption. In soccer, they tend to play a passionate game (some critics say “dirty”) and “leave their soul out on the field.”

Uruguay, you might have heard, has twice drunk from the World Cup: Back in 1930, it hosted and won the inaugural event held in Montevideo. It was held there because Uruguay had been the Olympic champion in 1924 and 1928 and so was considered among the great soccer powers of the world. The four stars on the Uruguay jersey (one of the sharpest in the world I might add) represent each of these world titles.

In 1950, Uruguay shocked the world by defeating Brazil in the final – in Brazil! – coming back from a 1-0 deficit no less. Commentators called it “the worst tragedy in Brazil’s history.” The goalkeeper for Brazil that day, Barbosa, was considered the best in world but was doomed to spend the rest of his life remembered as as the man who cost Brazil a title, like Buckner only worse, since he didn't really make an obvious mistake. Brazil in the 1954 World Cup introduced their iconic green and gold jerseys, leaving behind the white that had brought them such humiliation in 1950.

These stories and more are told in the outstanding book, El Fútbol A Sol Y Sombra (“Soccer in Sun and Shadow”) by the famous Uruguayan poet and journalist Eduardo Galeano. Galeano’s book uses short vignettes and descriptions — a goal here, a moment there — to tell the history of hundreds of years of soccer in very few words. It knocks you out.

Well, it’s been 60 years since they last won, and the feeling seems to be they’d have shot at a third if they would only play to their potential every time. But they haven’t recently. They were 6-6-6 in qualifying and the last team to make the field of 32. They don’t have great depth but they have skilled players, especially in the attack in Diego Forlan (Atletico Madrid), one of the best goal-scorers in the world and a classic peacock who likes to show the crowd his abs after he scores, which is often. He’ll be joined up front by Luis Suarez (Ajax) giving La Celeste one of the world’s most dangerous offenses. Martín Cáceres, a master of the subtle shirt-tug, leads the defense and resembles an action-movie villain. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera (Lazio) was in the news recently complaining that the ball being used for the game was difficult to handle, I don’t like the sound of that.

They play in a counter-attack style favored by coach Oscar “La Maestro” Tabarez. Experts seem to have no idea how Group A will go, with Mexico, France and host South Africa all capable teams joining Uruguay but I'm predicting a sweep and more world-cup glory. I for one welcome our new Uruguyan overlords.

Ball never lies. He may have oversold the trip, but it's a goal for Uruguay without the interference from the keeper, clearly he made contact.

Yeah I think South Africa are more complaining that he might have been offside when the ball was played back to him after the initial save,

That's how Mia Hamm once ended up playing goalkeeper for the US WNT in the Women's World Cup.

Khune's done for two games under this Cup's rules, correct?

Even assuming a magical turn of events for Bafana Bafana-- Mexico-France draw, then beating France in the last game while Uruguay assaults Mexico-- they'll miss him in the Round of 16.

Full disclosure: he had Uruguay -1 goal, plus Forlan to score first. (African World Cups may be rare, but hitting prop bet parlays like that is a once in a lifetime thing.)

Is anyone else just rooting for a whole lot of red cards?

Mexico's keeper looks like he's fifty. (A really fit fifty, but still.)

Ribery, Malouda, etc. are making him work for his postgame cerveza here.

It just gets better:

- Gourcuff and Ribéry brawled on the plane returning to their base camp after the Mexico game.
- Evra had a fight with the physio today and training was cancelled.
- The president of the FFF who didn't want Domenech to resign refuses to resign.
- The chief executive officer of the FFF just resigned.

Depending on your home ISP (you pop in your username/password from there for "free" access): http://espn.go.com/espn3/index

Forlan to Cavalli to unmarked Luis Suarez, who buries a sweet header past Perez for a 1-0 Uruguay lead just before the half.
