Better know a World Cup Enemy: Group H

Spain is clearly the powerhouse in the group (and the whole tourney for that matter), but my 1000-to-1 shot boys from Honduras have designs on being big-time spoilers.

Fairly lame logo:

Los Catrachos (means "the Hondurans", fairly lame nickname, too), are making their first World Cup appearance since 1982. They won entry to the WC by finishing third in the CONCACAF (gazundheit!) Gold Cup, a contest that saw them get bounced in the semi-finals 2-nil by the US of A in Chicago. They are currently ranked 38th best country by FIFA.

The Squad:

Most of the dudes play domestically in Honduras, but a few have made their mark in Europe: Palacios (originally signed by Arsene Wenger for Arsenal, now plays for Spurs), a couple dudes at Wigan, a few dudes in Italy, and one dude in Germany. Midfielder Roger Espinoza, plays in America for the KC Wizards.

Historically, the big-time scorer here is 36-year old Carlos Pavón (57 goals), who plays domestically for Real España. The best player, though, is probably David Suazo, who plays for Inter Milan. El Capitán por los Catrachos is 34-year old Armando Guevara.

Here's the rest of the dudes, which their pro team in parenthesis.

Goalkeepers: Ricardo Canales (Motagua), Noel Valladares (Olimpia), Donis Escober (Olimpia)

Defenders: Victor Bernardez (Anderlecht/Belgium), Maynor Figueroa (Wigan/England), Boniek Garcia (Olimpia), Sergio Mendoza (Motagua), Emilio Izaguirre (Motagua), Johnny Palacios (Olimpia), Mauricio Sabillon (Hangzhou Luchen/China), Osman Chavez (Platense)

Midfielders: Edgar Alvarez (Bari/Italy), Julio Cesar de Leon (Torino/Italy), Roger Espinoza (Kansas City Wizards/USA), Amado Guevara* (Motagua), Ramon Nunez (Olimpia), Wilson Palacios (Tottenham/England), Hendry Thomas (Wigan/England), Danilo Turcios (Olimpia)

Forwards: David Suazo (Inter Milan/Italy), Georgie Welcome (Motagua), Carlos Pavon (Real Espana), Walter Martinez (Marathon)

*-Captain

Who's Hot?

Nobody, really. They played to a nil-nil draw in a friendly with toothless Azerbaijan the other day, and haven't won an international friendly since January when they beat the USA 2-0 right here in Los Angeles, CA. Plus top dawg Suazo, who hasn't scored an international goal since November, tells El Heraldo not to worry about his scoring drought:

"I think they are circumstances and we are working to improve them. The goals will come when they come. The important thing is the hard work of the group, which is being consolidated. People should be calm and realise that things are improving."

OK by me.

Who's Not?

All the players on the whole team.

Uniforms

Honduras wears their country's colors of blue and white proudly on their sorta odd-looking kits. They're made by a company called Joma, and have a weird, unnecessary, thick horizontal stripe on both the home white and the away blue kits that seems to serve no purpose but be a place to slap the Joma brand name.

Take that shit off the top of each of the shirts, and the blue kit looks pretty sharp, actually. I like the big "H" on the leg of the shorts. The white kit looks sorta shitty, no matter what.

Outlook:

They play Chile first, which maybe then could win if striker guy gets his shit together, then they play Spain, which, ah, who gives a crap, I only chose Honduras because of this smokin' hot chick in Honduras I'm hoping to go hang with soon.

I'd post a picture, but the internet's way too small a place nowadays.

El Fin.
¡Andalé, Catrachos!

Nice job, someone always gives the early tourney a shocker, why not Honduras?, are they one of those high altitude countries, if so then they will welcome it in S.A.

Re: Better know a World Cup Enemy: Group H

I'll see your Honduras and raise you a chili ... or a Chile.

Here’s the skinny on Chile -- get it, skinny? Because it’s a skinny country you idiots. Man I crack me up sometimes.
El Rojo - The Red Ones - are in their 8th WC, 1st since 1998.
Their history in WC play is tainted somewhat, but only if you consider being banned from both the 1990 & 1994 tourneys due to faking an injury to get a knock-out match that you were in the process of losing canceled a bad thing. During qualifying for the 1990 games the Chilean goalie was caught on tape cutting himself with a razor blade in order to make it look like he had been injured by thrown fireworks in an attempt to have the match declared a no contest. (Don’t you just hate when that happens.)
Best finish = 3rd in 1962
18th in the current world rankings
In Group H with favorite (and #1 overall) Spain, also Honduras & Switzerland

This year’s squad has the country’s hopes as high as a condor’s nest in the Andes. They finished 2nd in the South American (CONMEBOL) qualifying group, just getting nudged out for the lead by Brazil. They are led by an Argentinean coach (and former coach of Argentina) Marcelo “El Loco” Bielsa - the mad man - who favors an attacking style while fast-tracking young, fit talent often over established stars and has been known to visit the local zoo and watch the animals for inspiration about formations.
Sure, this attacking style and youth-heavy lineup could leave them vulnerable on defense (or defence if you prefer) while producing high-scoring unpredictable games - they were 2nd in goals scored but also 4th in goals allowed during the CONMEBOL tourney - but they’ll put their faith in their captain and star the goal-tender Claudio Bravo (not to be confused with Claudio A&E or Claudio Univision).

Sked:
6/16 vs Honduras
6/21 vs Switzerland
6/25 vs Spain

Skuad:
1 - Claudio BRAVO - GK - Real Sociedad (ESP)
2 - Ismael FUENTES - DF - Univ. Catolica (CHI)
3 - Waldo PONCE - DF - Univ. Catolica (CHI)
4 - Mauricio ISLA - DF - Udinese (ITA)

I think for Spain to win it all then Torres needs to be fit and ready to go, with a knee injury/surgery I just don't see that , one of the things that makes him great is his explosive turn of pace, his strength, all things that require a goos knee.

Chile-Honduras is on.

I own a pair of Joma soccer cleats; they are several years old but barely used -- they were the last pair I bought before injuries and an irreversible decline in speed forced me to retire from ultimate frisbee.

Chile looks like the more skilled squad so far.

Swiss take a 1-0 lead early in the second half after Spain overextends their pressure in the other half (Puyols pushing up? Really?) and Gelson Fernandes buries one past Iker Casillas.

Re: Better know a World Cup Enemy: Group H

MBM

GOAL! Spain 0-1 Switzerland (Fernandes 52) This is absurd. It's a ridiclous goal too. A long goal kick was headed down by Derdiyok, who then ran onto the return pass from Nkufo and tore into a huge gap between Pique and Puyol. Casillas came out feet first and took him out, but play continued and the ball hit Pique, ran loose, hit Pique again – who fell on it with his hands – and then broke loose for Fernandes to tap in from two yards. There were bodies flying everywhere there, like some sort of cliched barroom brawl; it was ridiculous. Pique has a boxer's cut above his right eye and is being treated for it.

Funny that Casillas was critical of England's goalies last week before it all started....

wtf is he doing?

This is a fun game with lots of shots on goal and good blocks by the keepers (except that one time).

Re: Better know a World Cup Enemy: Group H

More than a little bit nuts, that one.

Spain's getting desperate, forcing shots at every opportunity. To their credit, though, they're still getting some great chances out of it-- Xabi Alonso wanged one off the post a few minutes back, and Navas just swerved one about 6 inches off the right post from the far side front of the penalty area.

ESPN3 is only available if your service provider (ex - Verizon, Comcast, et al) subscribes to it, although for some reason I get it at work too. Other options for online viewing include Univision (en Espanol) and atdhe.net.

Re: Better know a World Cup Enemy: Group H

This afternoon's games should be interesting, although I may be proven wrong again. All the teams in Group H have the opportunity to advance to the round of 16, although Honduras has to have a lot go right.

Here are the scenarios:

Chile

6 points from 2 matches, +2 goal difference
Chile wins the group with:
* Any win or draw with Spain (regardless of other result)

Chile qualifies in second place with:
* A loss to Spain combined with any Honduras win or Switzerland-Honduras draw
* A loss to Spain combined with a Swiss win that leaves Chile ahead of Switzerland on goal difference / tie-breakers.

Spain

3 points from 2 matches, +1 goal difference
Spain can win the group with:
* A win over Chile, combined with a Honduras win or draw in the other match.
( Spain beats Chile on tie-breakers with any win )
* A win over Chile, combined with a Switzerland win that leaves Spain above Switzerland on goal difference / tie-breakers.

Spain can qualify in second with:
* Any win over Chile (regardless of other result)
* A draw with Chile, combined with a Honduras win or draw in the other match.
* A loss to Chile, combined with a Honduras win that leaves Spain ahead of Honduras and Switzerland on goal difference / tie-breakers.

Switzerland

3 points from 2 matches, 0 goal difference
Switzerland can win the group with:
* A win over Honduras combined with a Spain win that leaves Switzerland ahead of Spain and Chile on goal difference / tie-breakers.

Switzerland can qualify in second with:
* A win over Honduras, combined with a draw or Chile win in the other match.
* A win over Honduras, combined with a Spain win that leaves Switzerland ahead of Chile on goal difference / tie-breakers.
* A draw with Honduras, combined with a Chile win over Spain.
* A loss to Honduras, combined with a Chile win over Spain that leaves Switzerland ahead of both Spain and Honduras on goal difference / tie-breakers.

Honduras

0 points from 2 matches, -3 goal difference
Honduras cannot win the group

Honduras can qualify second in the group with:
* A win over Switzerland, combined with a Chile win over Spain that leaves Honduras ahead of both Spain and Switzerland on goal difference / tie-breakers.

I'm rooting for Chile and "anyone but Spain" to advance.

Same. Whereas Italy's national style, as it were, is more or less predicated on dickbaggy behavior, any dickbaggy behavior on the part of, oh, say, David Villa is kind of incidental to Spain's success, as far as I'm concerned... though they bellyache like any bunch of stars, they're still a superlative team, and watching guys like Xavi and Villa do their thing at its best is next to godliness.

Chile's been attacking without worry even since the Villa goal, but... como se dice "curtains"?

ON THE OTHER HAND... this means that the Swiss could sneak in past Chile on goal differential now with a simple win. (The trick is managing a simple win.)

And-- sadly for the Swiss-- it stays uncomplicated. After Chile's goal, that match may have settled into dullness... but if the Swiss can't push a goal across, well, all the Spanish-Chilean weirdness in the world won't help with that.

Brazil-Chile and Spain-Portugal are the last two Round-of-16 matches set.
