World Cup Group D

Serbia
The Serbian team (the "White Eagles") returns to the World Cup after being knocked out in the group stage in 2006 and failing to qualify in 2002. Made the second round in 1998. This time, they won their qualification group (ahead of France) in an impressive showing.

The Serbian team is the successor to the Yugoslavian team (and after that, the Serbia and Montenegro team).

Players to watch:
Forward Milan Jovanovic ("The Snake.") Formerly of Standard Liege, and just transferred to Liverpool. Known as a free-kick specialist.
Striker Nikola Zigic stands 6' 8." Plays for Birmingham City and is one of the tallest professional soccer players in the world.
Midfielder Dejan Stankovic ("Deki") is the team captain and plays for Internazionale in the Italian Serie A league and has played for the national team since 1998.

Coach:
Radomir Antic is 15-5-2 since taking over as coach in August 2008. He is the only man to have been the head coach for Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

World Cup Prep:
They lost to New Zealand 1-0 last week and then tied Poland 0-0. These results were not good and the Serbian fans were extremely displeased, such that defender Nemanja Vidic had take to the PA system to calm them down.

Their coach is not worried, and commented that they're just using this time to work out the kinks. He commented that "everything was subordinated to time the peak of our form for June 13, to reach our level then."

Schedule:
vs. Ghana - June 13
vs. Germany - June 18
vs. Australia - June 23

Outlook:
This is a tough group. Germany's going to qualify out but the second spot is pretty much up for grabs. To advance, Serbia probably either needs to beat the Germans, or both Ghana and Australia.

Re: Better Know Your World Cup Group D Teams

The intimidating name for the Spanish national football team is La Furia Roja (The Red Fury).

The German team has the steely and simple Die Mannschaft (THE Team).

Team Cameroon are known as the Indomitable Lions.

and Australia are.... the Socceroos?

Boiiiing.

The Aussie national football team has an incredibly shit house nickname, no doubt created by some marketing firm on a late Friday arvo before holiday, but despite their bodgy recent form, they're a decent group of blokes who could be ridgy-didge come Sunday and surprise some Joe Bloggs.

History

This is just the third World Cup appearance for the Socceroos. They were unceremoniously dumped in the first round of their 1974 debut without scoring a goal, but made a better showing in '06, advancing out of Group F with Brazil before getting bounced by the eventual champs Italy in the knockout round. They got here in 2010 by kicking ass in the Asian Football Confederation qualifiers, finishing first in their group ahead of Japan, and beating teams like Iraq, Qatar, and Uzbekistan along the way.

Squad

There's some talent in Oz, and I mean more than just the Shiela's, though that is what I was primarily referring to. They're a veteran group (second oldest team in the WC) and are currently ranked 20th in the world by FIFA. The Roos are led by a solid midfield that includes Everton's Tim Cahill (20 international goals, 40 caps) and Blackburn Rovers' Brett Emerton (17 goals, 72 caps). Former Liverpool striker Harry Kewell might be the biggest scoring option up front, but he's been nursing a sore groin (that's a sore "donger" to you and me).

37-year old Fullham keeper Mark Schwarzer has become one of the more reliable goalies in the Premier League (and has made him a target of Arsenal's in the current offseason). He has a team-leading 75 caps and could be the stalwart that helps Oz advance past the first round. He also writes children's books about a fictional footballer called "Megs". Cute. Defender Lucas Neill, formerly of Blackburn, West Ham United, and Everton, is your team captain.

Goalkeepers: Adam Federici (Reading), Brad Jones (Middlesbrough), Mark Schwarzer (Fulham)

Defenders: Michael Beauchamp (Melbourne Heart), David Carney (Twente), Scott Chipperfield (Basel), Mark Milligan (JEF United), Craig Moore (no club), Lucas Neill (Galatasaray), Luke Wilkshire (Dynamo Moscow)

Midfielders: Mark Bresciano (Palermo), Tim Cahill (Everton), Jason Culina (Gold Coast), Brett Emerton (Blackburn), Richard Garcia (Hull), Vince Grella (Blackburn), Brett Holman (Alkmaar), Mile Jedinak (Antalyaspor), Carl Valeri (Sassuolo), Dario Vidosic (Nuremberg)

Forwards: Josh Kennedy (Nagoya Grampus), Harry Kewell (Galatasaray), Nikita Rukavytsya (Twente)

Sked

June 13 v. Germany
June 19 v. Ghana
June 23 v. Serbia.

This is a pretty tough group, so it'd be huge for Australia to pop Germany one in the first match, especially after their lackluster performances in their most recently friendlies, a 3-1 loss to the US, and an uninspired 2-1 win over New Zealand before heading to South Africa. If so, it looks like they'll have to do it without Cahill and Kewell, who might both be out injured against the Germans. The Aussies did beat Denmark 1-nil in a tuneup on Tuesday. Good on ya, Roos.

The Uni

The home kit is this beautiful green and gold number, modeled by Tim Cahill (going head-to-head with America's Clint Dempsey) below.

The badge is sweet, too:

The away kit is, meh, OK looking.

Outlook:

Tough group and injuries abound, but there is some talent there. Prediction: out in the first round, but I'm rooting for em and are hoping they sneak through.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oy oy oy!

Re: Better Know Your World Cup Group D Teams

Germany
ELO Ranking: 5
FIFA Ranking: 6

Few teams possess the World Cup pedigree of Germany. Germany (including West Germany) have three World Cup titles (1954, 1974, 1990) and runners-up in (1966, 1982, 1986, 2002) They have more World Cup Final and semi-final appearances than Brazil, notwithstanding the latter have appeared in two more tournaments. In the last 14 World Cup tournaments, Germany has always reached at least the quarter finals. An impressive resume, made even more remarkable by the fact that, with the exception of the 70's, German teams have never really had a proliferation of superstars.

2010 Qualification Campaign
Germany breezed through qualifying in a group that Russia and a bunch of jobbers. They finished with an impressive record of 8-0-2 with two draws recorded against Finland.

Squad
Goalkeepers
1 Manuel NEUER aged 24, 5 caps, Schalke 04
12 Tim WIESE aged 28, 2 caps, Werder Bremen
22 Hans Joerg BUTT aged 36, 3 caps, Bayern Munich
Defenders
3 Arne FRIEDRICH aged 31, 72 caps, Hertha BSC
4 Dennis AOGO aged 23, 2 caps, Hamburg SV
5 Serdar TASCI aged 23, 12 caps, Stuttgart
14 Holger BADSTUBER aged 21, 2 caps, Bayern Munich
16 Philipp LAHM (C) aged 26, 65 caps, Bayern Munich
17 Per MERTESACKER aged 25, 62 caps, Werder Bremen
20 Jerome BOATENG aged 21, 5 caps, Hamburg SV
2 Marcell JANSEN aged 24, 31 caps, Hamburg SV
Midlfielders
6 Sami KHEDIRA aged 23, 4 caps, Stuttgart
7 Bastian SCHWEINSTEIGER aged 25, 74 caps, Bayern Munich
8 Mesut OEZIL aged 21, 10 caps, Werder Bremen
13 Thomas MUELLER aged 20, 2 caps, Bayern Munich
15 Piotr TROCHOWSKI, aged 26, 31 caps, Hamburg SV
18 Toni KROOS aged 20, 4 caps, Bayer Leverkusen
21 Marko MARIN aged 21, 9 caps, Werder Bremen
Forwards
9 Stefan KIESSLING aged 26, 4 caps, Bayer Leverkusen
10 Lukas PODOLSKI aged 25, 73 caps, Cologne
11 Miroslav KLOSE aged 32, 96 caps, Bayern Munich
19 CACAU aged 29, 8 caps, Stuttgart
23 Mario GOMEZ aged 24, 34 caps, Bayern Munich

Teutonic Knights

Miroslav Klose
One of the many Poles in the German team, Klose (pronounced "Kloser") has 10 goals at World Cup tournament, most of them with his head. Simply put: he's lethal in the air. He hasn't scored for Germany this year (he was injured in March), but he'll be Germany's go-to-guy in South Africa. Watch out for his trademark showboat celebration when scores

Bastian Schweinsteiger
Talismanic attacking midfielder who can play on both wings or in central midfield. Keeps defenders guessing with his accurate crosses or scorching long distance shots. He does have a tendency to fade in and out of games. Has a very good goal ratio for a midfielder at international level.

Lukas Podolski
Another Pole. Has a horrible goal-scoring record at club level, but at international level averages better than a goal every other game. Shifts to the left wing to accommodate Gomez or when Germany play with one striker.

Preferred Formation
German manager Joachim Löw is a pragmatist and routinely changes his team's formation depending on the opponent and available players as shown in Euro 2008. Germany look flat (and very beatable) when they play 4-4-2. They look a better team when they pack the midfield in a 3-5-2 formation with Schweinsteiger playing in behind the front two.

Schedule
Australia (ELO:22, FIFA:20), June 13, 1430 ET
Serbia (ELO:19, FIFA:15) June 18, 0730 ET
Ghana (ELO:28, FIFA:32) June 23, 1430 ET

Analysis
The big story leading up to Germany 2010 WC campaign was the absence of Michael Ballack through injury. The Germans lose a lot of experience and his absence makes the German midfield look bare with extra responsibilities falling on Schweinsteiger and Trochowski. However, Ballack looked a tired figure at Chelsea last season and I believe the Germans can cope without him. The German squad is unimpressive on paper, but that has been said many times about previous German teams; you underestimated Germany at your own peril.

Germany have been known to be slow starters in WC tournaments and the match against Australia won't be a cakewalk. The possibility of an upset looms. Australia play a very similar game to Germany -- don't expect many goals in this one. A draw seems the most probable result, however, (throwing journalistic integrity out the window) I'm going to predict an upset.

Serbia were the most impressive team in the European section of qualifying but have been known to self-destruct in WC tournaments. One thing the Germans have that the Serbs don't is resilience and that will be the difference in this one.

Germany will seek to choke the midfield against Ghana. They'll be too organized at the back and have enough firepower up-front to prevail.

Prediction: 6 points (1st place)

Re: Better Know Your World Cup Group D Teams

Just peeked in on the Germany-Serbia game.

Apparently it's been a 'booking'-fest so far with yellow cards falling like soft rain around Derek Jeter. The announcers seem to think that the ref is totally imposing himself into the game.
And by minute 37 Klose for Germany picked up his second yellow and was sent off leaving the Germans to play not only without him but also short-handed for the remaining 53 minutes.
Serbia scored just moments later,

Now Germany hits the crossbar just before time expires in the first half and Serbia goes into the break up 1-0

Re: Better Know Your World Cup Group D Teams

First group-round loss since 1986 (Denmark) if I heard the announcers correctly.
Only saw a few minutes of this but the announcers were screaming about the refs, saying that he was booking everyone for minor fouls and just a minute later came the one which sent Klose off.

Now I guess they need their final game against Ghana to advance and will have to do it without Klose. Their goal differential based on their 4-0 win v Australia might come in handy.

Re: Better Know Your World Cup Group D Teams

Stunning

Full time: Germany 0-1 Serbia The second round of matches continue to reach the parts the first didn't even get near. This is a sensational result, even if it was largely the consequence of an execrable refereeing decision, and it leaves Group D wide open. Remarkable stuff, not least because Germany missed a penalty. If other results go as we might reasonably expect (Serbia beating Australia, Ghana not losing to Australia), Germany will need to beat Ghana to avoid going out of the World Cup in the first round for the first time in 72 years. Thanks for your emails; sorry I didn't have time to read them all, never mind use them. Bye.
