I don't mind it at all , it reminds me of the WC from Mexico '86, lots of noise at that one too.

Oh, this is a soccer thing. The only reason I clicked this link was because I thought it was a female body part.

It's odd. It's offputting. For the first couple of days, I could have sworn I had a hangover whenever I watched a game.

But then I'm sitting here at work, and... well... you know when you spend a day at the shore, and spend a good portion of the day in the water, and on the way home, you've got the sensation of being tossed by waves still imprinted in you?

I swear I can hear buzzing in my otherwise-silent office.

Re: Should the vuvuzela be banned?

We were listening on the radio this weekend and my sis-in-law asked if there were bees in the stadium. They had them at the Chelsea/Inter friendly I went to last year and they're even more annoying when the dude next to you is wailing on it.

If you can get enough of the vuvuzela, Vuvuzela Radio may be for you!

I don't give a fig about non-American football, but I love the vuvzela.

American sports teams should be so lucky to have thousands of fans make 120 decibel noise constantly for 90 minutes straight.

I like cowbells and whistles and chants and cheers and boos and bagpipes at sporting events. Noise is good.

However, your honor, I will stipulate that Thundersticks do, in fact, suck gargantuan Rally Monkey balls.

Agreed.

More importantly, though... can you use VUVUZELA in Scrabble yet?

I didn't think it was possible for any crowd activity at a sporting event to be more annoying and obnoxious than the wave. I was wrong.

I find it incredibly arrogant that anyone would want to ban something that is traditional in SA.

I've only seen 15min of World Cup footage, but they were doing the wave too.

I certainly agree. I find it offensive. I also have my suspicions that there's some latent racism involved.

Um... what?

It's loud, incessant buzzing, regardless of what's going on on-field.

I'm not in favor of banning it-- in part, because it's what the natives do, and we're just visiting-- but I can understand the point of those who do perfectly. And I can't see race there, no matter how hard I squint.

i don't. an international competition is well within its rights to establish standards of play, and i think "no artificial noise makers" is a fair and sensible one. what would be unfair is to allow a host country the potential advantage of artificial noise because its "traditonal" while denying other host countries the ability to use thunder-sticks or whatever if they wanted. and i'd rather shut every up than allow thunder-sticks.
also, i just find the noise annoying, i don't know what it sounds like THERE but on tv its like a swarm of insects.

Sure. Too late to ban them now, however:
1. They haven't had any such rules before;
2. This isn't a surprise, these noisemakers have been popular in South Africa at soccer games for years and years.

Re: Should the vuvuzela be banned?

They can't manufacture them fast enough in Britain , they are selling out , expect to hear them at EPL games next season and across Europe....

I should add that the English FA has said that there is noting in the rules that would ban them but it will be up to individual clubs on weather to allow then in to the grounds on game day.
