IGT 6/17/2010 NYM @ CLE: You Gotta Sweep Cleveland

G-Fafif

Tonight at 7:05, America's newest Every Fifth Day game show sensation, RAD or ICKY. Tune in and find out whether host R.A. Dickey will be more RAD than ICKY as he looks to make a certain Tribe of Clevelanders knuckle under to his charms.

I say R.A. Dickey is totally RAD and not all ICKY.

R.A. Dickey has become my favorite Met pitcher over his last three or four starts. That knuckle-ball of his is ridiculous. And I say that endearingly.

OE. I guess I should say Radickylous.

I'm a little surprised at how much I'm enjoying the amiable freakishness of Dickey's knuckler; I find myself looking forward to R. A. Dickey starts like I do visits to Coney Island.

I don't enjoy them quite as much. (I was at the first Phillies game) He lets so many guys on base, and I know they're all bloops or the occasional walk, but I just spend the time cringing that he's going to make one bad pitch and give up a ton of runs one of these days.

The new Coney Island park any good?

I really love the fact that it's so much faster than other knuckleballs I've seen. FanGraphs charts it as averaging out at 75 MPH, this season. That's 10 MPH faster that Wakefield's average (and a few ticks harder than Wake's fastball). The fact that he's been able to (relatively) control a pitch that moves so much and moves so quickly makes me think this isn't a fluke.

Incidentally, while trying to research knuckleball velocities, I noticed that Martino just today wrote an article on that very topic.

Is Martino a careless writer, or does he just have no idea what a knuckleball is?

[quote="Fedora McTrancePants"]That last part is key. Dickey could throw his knuckleball even harder than he does, but would have to sacrifice spin, the pitch's essential element. His high-70s speed is his maximum velocity while maintaining spin.

Knuckleballers are weird: R.A. Dickey holds opponents to a .236 average if his throws ball one, .296 if it's strike one.

Re: IGT 6/17/2010 NYM @ CLE: You Gotta Sweep Cleveland

In one of his recent starts, I was watching the opposing team telecast on Extra Innings, and they showed a slow-motion replay of one of his pitches; the camera followed the ball on its way to the plate. You were able to really see that the stitches on the ball weren't rotating. The ball wobbled a bit, a little back-and-forth sway, but none of that spin that you'd normally see. I know that that's how a knuckler behaves, but I don't think I had ever seen one so clearly. It was uncanny. It's hard to believe that a ball could be thrown 60+ feet without any spin at all.

Very nice 'D' by Reyes tonight.

Been trying to pigeon-hole him as a defensive player lately and have come to the conclusion that I don't think he'll ever be the spectacular type - the kind to sprawl out on the ground and steal sure hits and turn them into outs. But he does take a lot of funky plays and make them look fairly routine. Tonight there have been some slow choppers for him to grab on the 1B side of 2nd where he used his foot-speed to make plays that others won't get to quickly enough.
