How do you soccer heads sit through 2 1/2 - 3 hours of that
constant back round noise from those THINGS in surround sound?

I keep hoping that one of these games will somehow morph into a 60,000 person orgy. So far, instead, it's dull as shit.

Re: Make it stop NOW!!!

Actually futbol, unlike the snorefest called football in the United States, has games that always finish in less than two hours including half-time and stoppage time. No time outs, very few substitutions, play restarts immediately after a penalty instead having some guy with a headset slowly and methodically explain what everyone knows already, no tv timeouts, no commercials, no bunch of guys standing around on the sideline doing nothing for half the game, no bunch of guys standing around on the field talking about what they're going to do, no taking a knee to run down the clock, no players walking off the field while the clock is still ticking.

Just 45 minutes of non-stop action, a 15-minute break, and another 45 minutes of non-stop action.

Re: Make it stop NOW!!!

If two American football teams ended in a 0-0 tie, the game would be ridiculed and mocked for years and years.

I played soccer for a couple of years as a kid and thought it was a lot of fun. But watching it on TV is akin to watching cars loop around an oval for a couple of hours. It holds none of my interest.

I'm really glad this thing only comes around every four years...like Olympic ice dancing and FOX News presidential election coverage.

Really depends on how loosely you define action doesn't it? The highest scoring game there was only 41 shots on net, which actually seems high, what's defined as a 'shot'? People think Hockey is slow and low-scoring and there are twice as many shots in an average game.

People rarely join the Forum just to express how little they care for or about the Mets. People don't generally trek to KFC to point at the menu and snicker about how they'd never touch that shit, not in a million years. People don't often spend hours watching then bitching about "American Idol" without caring on some level about it. If you do any of the previous, then you should probably look into a weekly talk group and/or serious meds.

I know this doesn't really apply to you, Monk and Cee, so I apologize if this comes off as tin-eared or misdirected... but why the ever-living FUCK do so many "noncaring" Americans (and yes, it really IS an American thing; those people who aren't U.S. nationals who don't give a shit seem to tend toward polite avoidance) spend so much time and energy going out of their way to remind people how little they care about the World Cup, or soccer in general? Why try and argue with us about our leisure choice. We get it. You're above this sad little turd of an athletic event that excites 90% of the people on the globe beyond all normal bounds of excitement, has literally stopped wars, and-- oh yeah-- is, for all its flaws as a game, is pretty fucking tense and engaging when you know what's going on. I'm so impressed with your sophistication that I crapped my Euro-cut briefs. Now shut your fat mouth.

If you're a newbie, and have genuine questions, by all means, ask a friendly person in the know. But if you don't like it, don't watch. Don't tread on me; me won't miss you. A lot of us enjoy this, we don't get to enjoy it very often, and the vuvuzuelas provide quite enough background noise-- your bitching is extraneous, grating and serves absolutely no purpose. Choke on a hairy pair of Jabulanis, you useless pile of dickcheese.

It's fair, and I do try to avoid doing this is different forums. (in the actual soccer threads here I kept my comments to casual-disinterest, and i haven't yet replied to jessespector on twitter to tell him the stfu with the entire world cup play by play) this "make it stop now!!!" thread seemed fair game though.

Also, I'm pretty sure you could make a chess match 'tense and engaging' if you develop a strong rooting interest in it and actively follow a player. Maybe i need to take my patriotism pills, but I've never been able to get overly excited about national events. I was at a WBC game and that was actually baseball and I wasn't even disappointed when PR (which I guess is technically America but not the point) destroyed USA.

Re: Make it stop NOW!!!

This thread was started jokingly about that annoying buzzing sound
that was coming out my right rear speaker this afternoon not to diss
the World Cup. Most of the times when I watch soccer it's on weekend
mornings and I have music on instead of the announcers and buzzing ...

You elitist soccer loving, helmet and shoulder pad hating, swine ...

I have never snored during a football game, but also don't nap during baseball
games either because I'm tuckered out from, "my busy busy life!!!" I like time
outs ... I need to pee, scratch myself, get something from the fridge or cooler,
and occasionally I use the phone or need to take the garbage out. Maybe if they
took an extra minute or two to figure out that the goal taken away from USA (I
just typed the Mets and had to backspace lol) was total bullshit that might have
been nice too. You like baseball, there's a bunch of guys SITTING around doing
nothing for half the game but you're OK with that? And the last part is what really
set me off ... at the end the televised game this afternoon BOTH teams took the
proverbial knee and ran down the clock. Were you napping? Spain was winning so
they play "catch" and Chile didn't care because their bread had already been but-
tered with the loss in the other game.

Re: Make it stop NOW!!!

Football's an okay game but I don't really get into because of the reasons outlined above. It just irks me when people claim that it's an "action game." The WSJ did a study and found that there's only 11 minutes of action in 60 minutes in play, plus all the timeouts, commercials, et al. A big part of football is strategy - time outs to discuss plays, huddles, even on the line of scrimmage. Another big part of the game is legal - when the referees call penalties, add or subtract yardage and downs, and explain it all to the audience. This aspect is not unlike a courtroom drama. The actual action takes place in short bursts between the the strategy and legal portions of the game. This is all fine and good and I can appreciate why people like it but it's not my thing. I just take umbrage when people claim that American football is an action sport when it is anything but, and soccer is boring when it's actually non-stop action.

Btw, this is a fair point and definitely a flaw in the way group play is set up in these kinds of tournaments that can create final games where neither team really needs to play. I do find it less egregious than the way American football is designed that allows the team that's leading to just sit on the ball and keep the clock running and then walk off the field while the clock is still ticking even when the other team wants a chance to get the ball back and try to score. This doesn't happen in any other sport - in hockey they'll pull the goalie and try to get a goal even if there's no hope of catching up, in baseball the losing team gets the last at bat. In soccer they keep kicking the ball around and if one or both of the sides wants to attempt to score they will keep trying until the whistle blows.

My grandfather used to say that it's a game of lawyers. One guy scores and then the striped suits (shirts) gather around and decide whether or not he really scored.
