Re: IGT 7/3/10 NYM @ WAS: Strasurday in Nats Park

Strasurday, in the park
We think it is the third of July
Pitcher's balking, Mets fans laughing
Edgy's eating ice cream
Ike hits a three run dong
Eicay vare, eise narde **
Can Ike hit it (yes, he can)
And we've been waiting such a short time
Beat Stasurday

(** -- what the fuh is Eicay vare, eise narde?)

Indeed.

And here's more fun science-y sports stuff from the Paper O' Record, about what goes into Strasburg's 100-plus-mph fearballs, physically speaking.

Given a lazy Sunday to fill, I'd crack a spy thriller or watch an action yarn called "Magnus Force."

Because he got where he was going anyway.

That's one of those plays where the ump can indicate obstruction (interference is what runners do to fielders) and then wait until the end of the play to assess whether or not the fielder's action prevented the runner from advancing as far as he would have without it.

The Nats do seem to have the Dabidrye scouting report drilled into all their pitchers, don't they? (I have a feeling Strasburg has his way with the big guy today.)

Dickey pitching for us speaks to the "hater" in me, 'cause he really has a way of making opposing hitters look like assholes. It's fun.

Case in point: Nyjer Morgan, who basically spins around twice chasing strikes before grounding out.

Someone refresh my memory: what exactly was the main issue with Thole's defense, again? The throwing? The "game-calling?" 'Cause he looks pretty damn comfortable back there catching the knuckler, and he's been quick on the foul pops.

Meanwhile, Dickey is keeping it up through four (3 hits allowed, 4 total baserunners).

Re: IGT 7/3/10 NYM @ WAS: Strasurday in Nats Park

Why does he have a limit keeping Parnell from pitching more than one inning, but has no compunctions about pitching him every day? GUH!

Because --- and this is so obvious it's terribly infuriating --- avoiding extended appearances leads to frequent appearances.

One is the natural extension of the other. The corollary.

Howie and Wayne are going on about the quixotic search for an "eighth inning guy" right now.

Hey, Howie! Wayne! Shut up! It's not that we can't find one. It's that we've had a half dozen and Jerry takes turns pitching them into ineffectiveness.

Well, there's the rub isn't it?

Thirty bullpen managers stuck in a deliberately limiting philosophy, and the one who has the courage to zag when everyone else is zigging will own the future.

Dessens, Parnell, Feliciano don't have it, they come out. K-Rod doesn't have it, we sit and wait for the ceiling to crash on our heads. Unfuckingbelievable.

I mean, totally believable, it's been the way baseball has been run for twenty-plus years, but unfuckingbelievable.

Not us. We were there for the whole thing, and 45 minutes before. I was more upset after Thursdays loss because they didn't make an effort. Here, Dickey outpitched the wonderboy, the team played hard (even though they missed some opportunities for tack-on runs) and our closer, the one that Jerry protects above all others, gave it away.

BTW, it appeared everybody sitting in the cushy seats right behind the plate in the ninth was different from whoever was sitting there in the first few innings, and the second group looked like it has just come from a Republican fundraiser. Perhaps it was the prize in a raffle.

Or maybe himself for not inserting his overpaid shitty diva into more meaningless games in the in-bewtween to "keep him sharp" so he'd be ready for sparkling performances like these or simply stealing a win from deserving teammates.

F Frankie. The Mets learned absolutely nothing from Wagner, and nothing from 2008. They're fucking idiots.

I could not believe that, after the break for the review on the wall banger, that B-Rod was still on the mound.
I would have went out there and said,"Your job was to save this game. You failed. Hit the showers."

And not only that......
The drive by Dunn---it couldn't just go over the fence and end it.
Oh no, that would be too easy. We are Met fans, so, oh no, God forbid we should not have to be tortured more than the average fan and just let it be over with with a granny by Dunn.

I'm not done my rant yet, but thats all I'm typing. The rest I'll yell at the screen.

I bailed on the ninth. I don't blame myself. I was busy.

But never did I think that Jerry could out-do Randolph in bullpen bungling.

I mean, by "never," sure, for the last year and a half, but never before it.

For the record, I publicly apologize to Cora. After the Thursday loss, I said that Cora doesn't belong on the team. He can stay. I am sorry.

On the post game report, Jerry sounded more upset w/Ike than with Rodriguez. After the Thursday loss, I said that Jerry was an idiot. I am sorry... that he's an idiot.

We could have stayed and watched 'til the end, I suppose, but seeing it probably would have made me as sullen and tough to be around as a teen vampire and-- most likely-- soured the evening.

Somehow, not actually seeing it provided the break I needed to shelve this loss psychically.

Of course, it's all flooding back now like delayed grief, so...

Re: IGT 7/3/10 NYM @ WAS: Strasurday in Nats Park

Was a great time at the game if you just forget about the 9th inning. I liked Nationals Ballpark quite a bit; the interior and layout reminded me of a more effective version of what Citizens Bank Park has (plus the Nationals fans seemed like nice people, at least the ones around us).

It seemed that Strasburg's wildness died down once he took 2-3 mph off the fastball and was throwing at 95-96 instead of the 98-99 the stadium gun had him at during the 1st inning. Of course, once that happened, I think the Mets could actually catch up to some pitches and hence the three hits in the 3rd. Had carefully-selected seats that allowed a good view of the knee-buckling curve which I liked. The 91-mph changeup was just filthy. Of course, I'm still really glad we had a nice showing against him.

The subway ride plus drive back I guess allowed me to calm down somewhat but I am of course not happy, with Rodriguez for a total shit-the-bed performance but as was said perfectly above, the dumb-fuck mismangement of the 'pen that contributes to this stuff.

My new favorite ballpark concession item is the Victory Knot . Not my photo but that's what you get. A $15 pretzel that is the diameter of a small pizza and feeds two (or more). Three generous size dipping cups, one with chipotle mustard, one with beer cheese, and one with sweet cinnamon creme. Yes, it is as good as it sounds.

Re: IGT 7/3/10 NYM @ WAS: Strasurday in Nats Park

I was in and out of this game much of the day and didn't catch any wrap-up stuff* - mainly because I had hit the 'Off' button on the remote before Pudge's single had hit grass.
So what was Jerry complaining about concerning Ike?

* Hours later I did catch about 15 minutes of Tony Paige on FAN and, as usual for him, he was using the loss to rant about Castillo - as if the Tejada turn a sure GiDP ball into a 2-run inning hadn't happened.

Re: IGT 7/3/10 NYM @ WAS: Strasurday in Nats Park

Great paragraph by metgrrl today, summing up what it feels like to go to a road game and watch the Mets lose. Even though I live in DC, I'm rooting for the road team so these are road games for us:

The road losses are the worst. They are the worst because you head to the game in such high spirits, you are far from home (even if you’re just in the Bronx), you are decked out to represent, you cannot hide, you are not there to hide. You have to take your knocks while still fervently wishing you could find a rock to crawl under and hide. You deal with feeble taunting or outright inaccurate statements or even completely correct assertions and you are usually on your own with no support. And then you have the entire trip home (or evening in the hotel) to ruminate on the loss you just spent time and money to experience.

Dickey belongs in Anaheim
Sez ESPN's Rob Parker, in an article written a day or two before Dickey out-pitched Strasburg.
