Division-race implications aside, I'm not terribly eager to witness a Hanson-Dickey episode.

When I was younger, and more open to strange, new things... maybe. Or maybe if both were on our team, it would be easier and less awkward to derive enjoyment from such a setup. But now, now I could kind of do without watching a somebody else's Hanson-our Dickey kinda thing. That could be sort of painful... damaging, even.

Oh, and

Reyes batting righty vs. a righty is a waste of a lineup spot. Better it be the second spot than the leadoff spot.

Dumbest play I saw this season -- even though Wright's sac fly plated Dickey. Reyes has too much speed to worry about a DP. And if his hitting is so comprised because of his injury, so as to justify the sac bunt, then Reyes shouldn't be playing ... or at least shouldn't be batting second. What's the point of playing Reyes if injuries have, for now, reduced him to Miguel Cairo?

Only crying to Jerry that he wants to play this series, and I guess I really shouldn't hold that against him.
Wait...I don't.
What Ronnie said:Sometimes you have to manage a player instead of letting him manage you.

He is our switch hitting speedster lead off hitter. If he's too injured to do two of those things, I don't think he should play.
He is a WAY to important cog in our engine.
If he ends up injured for any long length of time, we are in serious trouble.

I really wish he wasn't goin to the AS game and could rest that quad for three days.

Just my opinion tho bro.

I can't get this play out of my head. It's like having Billie Don't be a Hero stuck in my brain on an endless loop. Jerry has Reyes sac bunt with Wright, the hottest hitter in all of baseball, Ike Davis, who can't go a week and a half without hitting a 450 foot homer and Jason Bay, the All Star $60M dollar investment all due up next. What's the point of having that middle?

The bunt I didn't like was the Thole one - although both Keith & Ronnie were OK with it.
Bunting a compromised Reyes to set up Wright & Davis makes more sense than bunting into Francoeur & Tejada.

And in case no one has noticed, Tejada is like 1 for his last 20-something, is striking out in about 1/3 of his ABs, and is barely getting the ball out of the infield when he does make contact.

1. Good on the rhymer.

2. We don't know. If Reyes wasn't comprised (but then why did he bat righty against the righty? Righty?) the sac bunt is unjustifiable. If he was comprised, then by how much? Because there's a threshold of injury where he shouldn't be playing. Did Reyes' nagging injury induce his 1st inning error?

I really don't think so.
I hope not.
It was an easy ground ball that did not take too much effort to handle.
He took his eye off it.

It was crucial too, cuz that would have ended the 1st at 0-0.

I did not like how Jose looked at second base after the double.
If this is a nagging injury, I really hope we don't regret him playing these games and the AS game.

Thing is, now we really gotta win 2 b4 the break, and we need him for that too.

I'm in a quandary.

Sure glad I'm not callin' these shots.

Re: IGT--Braves @ Mets, 07/09/10

Dickey led off that inning with a single, ferchrissakes. It's like having your leadoff guy up in the top of the first inning to start the game only he gets to bat with a runner on first handicap. And then that leadoff guy singles. And then it's Reyes and the 3-4-5 after that. Nobody was out. How often do you get that opportunity? The pitcher led off with a single. Dickey. The pitcher.

What's the run expectancy for when the inning begins with the 9 and 1 batters each singling? It's gotta be better than when the 1 and 2 guys lead with singles, no?

Mike Vaccaro, like me, focuses on the Thole bunt last night.

"Jerry Manuel is a good baseball man. But there comes a time in almost every game the Mets play – because almost every game they play seems to be tied in the fifth inning or later – when he needs to make a key decision: a bullpen call, a pinch hitter, any of the things that separate managers from caretakers.
And more often than is recommended by law, Manuel leaves you scratching your head."

Jerry does say - as Keith & Ron speculated - that Thole had the option of swinging away if he sees the SS breaking for 3rd (and Escobar made no attempt to disguise it) but that's not easy for a young player to pull off.
Me, I have him swing away.

Vaccaro is probably the best columnist in the city these days.

It's nice-- and all-too-rare-- when a sports columnist lets the facts inform his opinion and make his case.

Apparently Jerry said the same thing, that Thole should've swung and that was the only problem with the situation.

But as Keith did point out "That's a rookie up there. Should/Will a rookie blow off his manager's call if he thinks it's the right thing to do?"

Really, one misread and you're back with Bingo taking six hour bus rides. You can't expect a guy to make judgmental adjustments in the middle of a windup under those circumstances.

Re: IGT--Braves @ Mets, 07/09/10

I didn't agree with Manuel callling for that bunt either, but the manager's explanation for the Thole bunt play makes perfect sense to me. But I assume that Thole read the playbook and digested it in full, options and all. If Thole was given the option to swing away, then Thole wouldn't have flouted Jerry's instructions by swinging away.
