IGT- 2010 Home Run Derby

Derby's more fun in person. (all home runs are) but still gotta watch.. The Good Neighbor participants are: Chris Young (D-backs), Nick Swisher (Yankees), Hanley Ramirez (Marlins), Vernon Wells (Blue Jays), Miguel Cabrera (Tigers), Matt Holliday (Cardinals), David Ortiz(Red Sox), Corey Hart(Milwaukee) Why is Swisher allowed to play but the Yankees forced Cano out against his wishes? I know Joe Mauer and his three home runs were winning the fan poll (which obviously isn't as binding as the All-Star Game one), I'm assuming he won it, but I don't see it posted anywhere. Prince Fielder is last year's champ and is not participating. David Ortiz has a chance to surpass Ken Griffey Jr's (Who would've been a fun 'guest' slugger this year, and would probably be more of a draw than Corey Hart) 70 all-time Home Run Derby home runs as he's sitting at 54. No Mets player has participated since Wright went to the finals (with me in attendance) in 2006. Only one Mets player has ever won it. Do you know who?

Wells finds his stroke this year after a miserable season and enters this?, it just seems that some guys get messed up after the Derby.

I attended the one in Cleveland in 1997. Tino Martinez won it. Plegh.

Apparently it goes all the way back to 1985. I thought it was much more recent. I don't believe I've ever watched a Home Run Derby, and back in 1985 I was still watching everything baseball.

I thought it had started in the mid-90's. Maybe it didn't get TV coverage until then?

I mean, I'm certain there have been guys who swung so hard in the Derby, they tweaked something, or something stupid like that. But most of the time, it's guys having a great (read: unsustainable career-high) first half who "come back down to earth" (regress to their average level of performance, or thereabouts) afterward. Even the year Wright "got messed up," he didn't get messed up. He was posting a .600-ish slugging percentage heading into the break with 20 HR-- both absurdly high numbers for 23-year-old DW; his slugging came back down as the season wore on, and his season-ending numbers (26, .531) looked a lot like what he did the year before (27, .523) and the year after (30, .546)... he took a circuituous, weird-seeming route, IOW, to his at-the-time career average.

It wasn't a huge deal at first. When we went in Cleveland, Will and I were there with my 5-year-old (at the time) for the FanFest, knowing we'd never get tickets for the game. As we were walking around the stadium taking photos the day before the game, a scalper approached us and asked if we wanted Home Run Derby tix for $5 over face, which was $20. We figured that was as close as we got to the game. The ticket allowed us to see the "workout day," the celebrity softball game and the derby. Bobby Jones was our lone rep that year. We didn't spend too much time watching the softball game, which seemed to lack many real celebrities. The FanFest, by the way, is worth going to.

Well, unless this becomes the least-homerific Home Run Derby, neither of the first two guys are gonna be in the second round. Of course, that doesn't mean Berman isn't annoying already.

I'm already annoyed at Twitter and the constant hate of event. News Flash! You don't have to watch! Same to the radio hosts all day, you don't have to watch! stop complaining!

I keep thinking that one of those kids roaming the outfield are gonna get skulled by ball, but then again, half of them take better routes to the ball than Roger Cedeno used to!

Nice of Hanley to greet Reyes and his kids though. I guess.

This is on the TV, but I just can't get into it for some reason. I did pay attention when Will Farrell was talking, but he was off in a few minutes. If they had Will doin the entire derby as Harry Caray I'd be paying attention.

(They were talking about how they hadn't seen a foul ball yet when there actually was one not too muich before they said it.)

It DID take forever, and certainly loses some of the interest when the biggest stars take a pass. Not exactly McGwire and Sosa type of sluggers up there last night. Chris Berman drives me nuts, and it's not even the back-back-back nonsense. He'd go on about a ball being pulverized and then watch it land in the bullpen. When someone actually did crush one, he had nothing real to say.

I imagine he doesn't even pay much attention, just "reacts". Mixes it up with too many (mostly boring) interviews. The thing doesn't even need that much analysis. Just watch the majestic swings and towering homers and shut up. When a Tigers fan catches Cabrera's home run, couldn't hurt to mention. Talk about the home run distances. Talk about who's farthest, who's winning. Talk about the All-Star Game. But I don't really care what Will Ferrells favorite movie is.
