The player featured on the cover is always the preceding season's MVP or Cy Young award winner. So the trick was to determine which player won that award two seasons before coming to the Mets. While Frank Viola won the Cy Young in 1988 -- one year before coming to the Mets in '89, he never made the cover of Who's Who. Canseco made the '89 cover.

Saberhagen won his second and last Cy Young in 1989, but lost the 1990 WW cover to '89 AL MVP Robin Yount. Sabes joined the Mets in 1992: so even if he did make the 90 WW cover, it would've been two years prior to his first Met season.

Now I'm grabbing. I know Spahn couldn't have won the 1963 Cy Young, because Koufax was automatic then. I know Willie Mays didn't win the 1970 MVP and George Foster didn't win the 1980.
