Nice job guys.

Applauding Chipper is classy.

Ceetar Jul 08 2010 08:31 AM Re: Boor or cheer Chipper and Mariano? |
depends on the game situation. if Cox pinch hits Chipper in the top of the 9th of a game the Mets are winning 6-1? sure. Even if it's just his last AB and he started, if the Mets are winning, i've got no problem. I like Chipper, in that "respect your enemy" type of way.

The problem is that any appearance by Rivera would likely be in a game-critical situation and your chips have to be on the right side of the table at such moments.

apparently not. I've always thought Rivera basically fits the profile of a steroid user in the 90s. Failed starter, surgery, fringe guy just trying to make it.

...plays for the New York Yankees.

QFT. As Jason Fry said, Larry has been a worthy adversary. Who is Rivera to us? Because Frankie walked him with the bases loaded (the Wilpons have already recognized his actions)? If he played anywhere else this wouldn't be an issue because he achieved greatness in the other league. Just because he plays in another borough doesn't give him a higher status in my mind.

I'll boor them both.

Exactly. Chipper, however, it'd likely be a situational thing, but unless it's a game-on-the-line situation, I'd honor his memory.

Her source? An exclusive report from ESPN's Illicit Pharma division. (Actually, I think that's noted performance-enhancement SME "Buddy Gus" bringing said implicit absolution.) A "Larry" chant would be the most appropriate tribute for the Ol' Hooter, wouldn't it?

I'd go for a swim in his pool before I'd applaud Mariano.

I wish I'd thought of that line when I answered the question. PS, it's not Linda Cohn but the SportsGuy Guy who's deciding what drugs they took or didn't take.

Wow, did I misread that shit. No wonder I liked Taryn's comments better than your'n.

And you're not glib enough to KTE with the rest of us. Bullspit, prettylady. Additionally... has it occurred to any of these guys who constantly praise Rivera as the "classiest" and "most dignified" guy in any walk of life that, well, someone who's raised to walk softly and be really, really religious generally grows up to be a guy who walks softly and is really, really religious? It doesn't make you a good person... it makes you someone who, taste-wise, favors outward modesty. I mean, building hospitals for your people-- and those you've never lived among, ever-- is class. Being exceedingly giving of one's limited time and energy to kids with terminal cancer, especially when the cameras aren't on (and gladly tempting ridicule when they are)... that's dignified. Contributing some to the church he was indoctrinated to support, avoidance of smiles after victories, and generally not being a Panamanian John Rocker? Well, with all due respect, all it means is that he's blandly, politely inoffensive, not Gandhi with a fucking cutter.

If it were definitely going to be Rivera's last game against the Mets, it would be interesting.
|
Gwreck Jul 08 2010 10:11 AM Re: Boor or cheer Chipper and Mariano? |
Things I learned from that piece: Rivera's only blown save against the Mets was the Matt Franco game in '99. (Wright '06 was a tie game).

Benjamin Grimm Jul 08 2010 10:22 AM Re: Boor or cheer Chipper and Mariano? |
Ideally, Mariano Rivera's last appearance against the Mets will be as a mop-up pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In this case, he gets a standing "O" from me. For the class.

I misread which comments were attributed to which author. Isn't that clear?

Not particularly.

Mariano would never play for any other team but the Yanquis ... why it would be undignified!! Just like Tim McCarver said last year about Hidecki Matsui.

I'd like to see Jones and Mo reenact the scene from Blues Brothers where the car with the two Illinois nazis gets dropped from the crane.

Chipper gets a tip of the cap form me. He made it more fun.

I still think that a barrage of warm, loving boos would be most appreciated by Larry.

Cheer Larry, boo Mariano.

batmagadanleadoff Jul 08 2010 05:55 PM Re: Boor or cheer Chipper and Mariano? |
I'm rooting for a career ending injury. And soon. Rivera has a credible shot at breaking Orosco's record for most games by a pitcher. Orosco has a 302 game lead.
