Happy Independence Day

The Second Spitter

Since it's already 4/7 here, I think I should be the first to offer my wishes.

Happy 7th of April to you too.

What better way to celebrate your country's independence than to blow up a small part of it.

Re: Happy Independence Day

When I was a young boy
I heard a girl cry out
Burned by a rocket
One Independence night
I saw her all summer
Her face in my memory
And still I recall her
When the fireworks take flight

So don’t give me no rockets
On the Fourth of July
Don’t give me no whiskey
On St. Patrick’s Day
And hold the tequila
On El Cinco de Mayo
Just give me some peace, Lord
I prefer it that way

I was born in a ghetto
Of good pious people
But the doctors told stories
Of March seventeen
Men thrown through windows
And wrecks on the highways
Hospitals filled with
The blood of the green

So don’t give me no rockets
On the Fourth of July
Don’t give me no whiskey
On St. Patrick’s Day
And hold the tequila
On El Cinco de Mayo
Just give me some peace, Lord
I prefer it that way

I still love my freedom
And the faith of my fathers
I still love my country
And I’ll sing her a song
Guess I’m still that young boy
Heart’s still in the ghetto
But think on that poor girl
And tell me I’m wrong

So don’t give me no rockets
On the Fourth of July
Don’t give me no whiskey
On St. Patrick’s Day
And hold the tequila
On El Cinco de Mayo
Just give me some peace, Lord
I prefer it that way

Or, you could think on West Islip, where I'm pretty sure this guy learned a lesson about explosives safety. Yipe:

Suffolk County police say 36-year-old Eric Smith was using a 3-foot long metal tube to shoot mortars from the street near his Islip Terrace home around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

Police believe he leaned over the device to ignite it and didn't get out of the way before an explosive shot out of the launcher. His left arm was severed at the shoulder.

Smith was taken to Southside Hospital in serious condition while friends packed the lost limb in ice to try to save it. Police believe doctors will try to reattach his arm.

A hospital spokesman didn't immediately return a call.

Re: Happy Independence Day

Shooting mortars sounds awfully militaristic, is that what big fireworks
are really called? I miss blowing things up with M-80's and blockbusters.
Those blockbusters used to be a quarter stick of dynamite and really
packed a punch lol.

Safe Fourth to all ... here a Lee there a Lee everywhere a Lee a Lee ...

Love those go-tourist-in-your-own-town days. Next time you're 'round there and in the mood for a tipple, stop by Jimmy's Corner, the dive bar a couple of doors down. It's owned by a former longtime cornerman for Floyd Patterson and Bobby Cassidy, and chock full of fight posters and Stax on the jukebox. Nice little joint.

LWYP and I (BetterHalfer had to work) hit City Island for an afternoon of walking the water's edge, smelling the fishy air, pointing and giggling at suggestive boat names (mostly me) and happily peeing ourselves (again, mostly me).

Today, it's hide-from-the-sun until we have to go to a family 'cue later.

We were in City Island Friday night at the Crab Shanty ....I ate my first ever lobster tail and liked it.....my tipples these days consist of nothing more than a pepsi , but thanks for the tip....I really love the pedestrian areas in Time Square....it really is a great idea.

Was thisclose to doing Crab Shanty. Instead, stopped at Johnny's Reef Restaurant ("last one on the left" on City Island Rd.)... REALLY greasy stuff.

Too bad about the tipplin'... Jimmy's is a Coke joint.

Yep , the only time I drink coke is form a fountain ...curiously it doesn't taste like it does from a can then.....I had the ribs, the beans, fries....and a sundae .....the Spain game was on so the place was lively.

Happy birthday, America. Here's a few bucks, go get yourself somethin nice.

Saw a couple of guys wearing this style Mets hat today in DC, as well as a few others wearing this color pattern with the Washington logo. Much nicer than the god-awful white caps they wore this year, or the red from 2009 (I'm still pissed the Mets had to wear red hats in Philly).

Re: Happy Independence Day

I'm glad it's over though, love the fireworks but really dislike the neighborhood numb-nuts that have been constantly over the past week setting of fireworks nightly , so much noise.....a few neighbors put on a good show last night though.
