Okay we've waited long enough. Let's get this thing started.

We'll be playing a double elimination tournament with 11 contestants using the leisurely Facebook SCRABBLE application and following the gentlemen's code of conduct to not use dictionaries and to skip a turn if we play a phony.

The lower ranked contestant challenges the higher seed, so let's go.

Here's the bracket:

If you can't read that, here is the opening round:

A) 8. FMan 99
9. Edgy DC

B) 7. Ceetar
10. Old Mole

C) 6. Willets Point
11. Kong76

Alternatively, you could search within FB (using the field at the top) for "ceetar;" his secret identity is the only reg'lar person name what pops up.

Not looking forward to facing either of my potential first-match opponents, actually. Let's hope they beat each other up in the first round and get stuck with a bunch of Cs and Vs.

Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney

the american heritage dictionary tells us:

nerdy adj.
Word History: The word nerd, undefined but illustrated, first appeared in 1950 in Dr. Seuss's If I Ran the Zoo: "And then, just to show them, I'll sail to Ka-Troo And Bring Back an It-Kutch a Preep and a Proo A Nerkle a Nerd and a Seersucker, too!" (The nerd is a small humanoid creature looking comically angry, like a thin, cross Chester A. Arthur.) Nerd next appears, with a gloss, in the February 10, 1957, issue of the Glasgow, Scotland, Sunday Mail in a regular column entitled "ABC for SQUARES": "Nerda square, any explanation needed?" Many of the terms defined in this "ABC" are unmistakable Americanisms, such as hep, ick, and jazzy, as is the gloss "square," the current meaning of nerd. The third appearance of nerd in print is back in the United States in 1970 in Current Slang: "Nurd [sic], someone with objectionable habits or traits.... An uninteresting person, a 'dud.'" Authorities disagree on whether the two nerdsDr. Seuss's small creature and the teenage slang term in the Glasgow Sunday Mailare the same word. Some experts claim there is no semantic connection and the identity of the words is fortuitous. Others maintain that Dr. Seuss is the true originator of nerd and that the word nerd ("comically unpleasant creature") was picked up by the five- and six-year-olds of 1950 and passed on to their older siblings, who by 1957, as teenagers, had restricted and specified the meaning to the most comically obnoxious creature of their own class, a "square."

I read a book last year called American Nerd which tells the history of nerds and in it learned that until the late 1970s the accepted spelling was NURD. I figured that the nerds who compile the SCRABBLE dictionary would count that variation and gambled correctly.

Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney

Yes, in the SCRABBLE dictionary the definition of NURD just says NERD
Since dictionary writers seldom if ever get rid of anything however antiquated, the Scrabble folks aren't likely to either. They even hold onto stuff that they admit should have been expunged long ago.
So basically, if it was uttered or written in English anytime between Chaucer and Snoop Dogg it's probably considered legit.

I was rating on a more "universal" Scrabble scale. I still think any success I have is from knowing a lot of words and being able to hook them with 2-letter words. ANTACIDS is pretty darn good (or did that come together in stages?) but, for resourcefulness, it's tough to beat NINJA with the 'J' doubled and then tripled.
Maybe not as many points as a Bingo, but real creative especially with the hook via the AA

Edgy DC
Jul 20 2010 07:34 AM
Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney

No, that's better than a lot of bingos. The typical bingo hits for around 77 points, because you typically need a lot of low-value versatile tiles --- E, R, S, T, etc. --- to score them, so unless you lay them in the Triple Word Score lane, you're usually not scoring big beyond the 50 point kapowie bomb.

NINJA in that case gives you 72 points for that J alone.

An important trait in a good Scrabbler is to not get to plussed when a bingo gets hammered down on you, and instead quickly refocus on all the new rows and columns opened up to you with which you can respond.

First few plays of the game as I remember them:

mm - CABAL

me - ANTACID, hooking the second A off the end of CABAL. I wasn't certain of CABALA, but the dictionary loves variant spellings of Hebrew and Yiddish words. Being Jewish is a huge advantage in Scrabble.

And I almost missed ANTACID...kept seeing ANTICAD.

mm - FAT

me - NINJA (on edit - FK's calculation of 62 for that play is exactly right)

mm - OUTWITS, for something like 83.

me - EX, with the X on a double letter, and also used to make FAX.

After 3 plays each, we were both right around 200 points.

Excellent game.

Edgy DC wrote:

Umm, not quite.
J = 8; doubling it get you to 16; then tripled = 48

For the whole word, NINJA = [1 + 1 + 1 + (8*2) + 1]*3 or 20 tripled = 60
Then throw in the two more for AA and it's a 62 pointer.

It's less than a lot of Bingos will get you, but a good score with a tougher rack.
Also an example of why, if you don't know the legal 'two-letters', you're going to lose by several hundred points every time.

SCRABBLE, for instance, accepts: SCHTICK; SCHTIK; SHTICK; and SHTIK

Lord knows what they do with CABALA, KABALA, etc.?

oe: a quick check seems to reveal that both 'C' & 'K' are valid along with each variant with single or double 'B'
Not double 'L' though, so maybe even they have their limits. Either that or Madonna hasn't yet gotten around to spelling it with a double 'L', something I'm sure would instantly put it into the accepted category.

Turning point was a 94 point bingo, dropping onto UN to make UNDERSIZE. Sorry to not show the board but I'm on my little netbook and I'm lacking a screen capture method here.

Serves you right for playing phonies.
Who's knocking those off, the computer or via player challenge?

If someone played those against me, I would have challenged PO and probably OPA
OWER and WINGE I likely would have assumed are just stupid enough to be actual words, particularly since at this point I'm convinced that virtually anything is a word to the extent that there's very little someone could throw up that I'd be confident enough to challenge out of fear it's real.

I thought I remembered seeing WINGE spelled that way in Juno and the Paycock.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote:
How about your tournament game? My momentum is going to waste.

I'm up 242-178. I opened up an initial lead slowly by hooking my way up the Double Word Score staircase toward the northeast, getting a lot of thirty-point-type scores hooking three-letter words.

RAN/ZA/EN for 18
NUB/NU/UM for 16
GAY/GUM/AB for 24
JOY/JAB/OY for 43.

Certainly not inspired play by any means, but my worthy opponent was having trouble getting a good rack together and I built up a decent gap after he traded in. When he bingoed back into it for 60 with POISONER, I was able to reconstruct most of lead two plays later by hooking FINCH off of NO using the H to form NOH, and landing getting a pile of mid-value tiles (FCH) onto the Triple Word Score square for 54 points. If I hang on, that's my turning point, but that's no sure thing, because the board has really opened up and we're throwing real punches now.

The key may be who gets that second blank.

Here's the bloodstained board. Edgy pointed to my play, BRAGGER (30 pts) as the Foxwoods Resort Casino Turning Point of the Game. I definitely do not bingo as well on the board. It takes too long, honestly. Online you can shuffle tiles over and over and take as long as you want to play. I've shuffled for ten minutes, seen nothing, then come back two hours later and suddenly something clicks. Can't do that in person.

Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney

I got hooked on Scrabble playing timed online games around 1996, and played in a few National Scrabble Association tournaments in 1997-98 (kicked butt at the novice level, but never made it beyond middle of the pack at the intermediate level). Timed tournament games are played with a chess clock, and each player gets 25 minutes in total, with a 10 point overtime penalty per minute.

I didn't bingo very much at first but, like JCL, playing with better competition helped me bingo more frequently. If I get a blank early in the game, I'll usually be able to bingo even in a timed game with a board. Otherwise, maybe not so much.

No question - it's easier to bingo when you're playing an online game on FB and you don't have either a clock or someone sitting across from you getting restless.

Heckuva game, actually. No bingoes, nothing fancy. My rack went to crap at the end; all Is and Us and Os with nothing fun to play with. I thought FOCI would save me, but I was out of bullets after that.

Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney

We're into the finale, and despite TWO Chad phonies, I just can't put the pieces together to pull away. I've been sitting on the X since my opening rack, and finally played it for a 143-96 lead.

TEARDOWN off the T in TIMID just gave me a 100-point lead. A top-of-the-sixth-inning grand slam, if you will.

90 points, dammit. NINETY!

Fittingly, I answered with WOE.

My "friends list" is not populating when I want to start a game. Anyone else having this issue?

Meantime if anyone wants a game you can challenge me.

Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney

And that... is that. 487-293.

This was a lot closer than the final score would indicate. A tough run of Chad phonies and I finally made it stick.

TEARDOWN, as I mentioned earlier, was the big hit, then another skip followed by my 50-point JIVE put it out of reach. Tried to play PHAM/PEACOAT on my last play for a walkoff blast, but PHAM isn't a word. But PE is.

It would be extremely difficult for it to not be closer than that final score. And it wasn't just about the phonies. Congratulations, Seawolf.

FWIW, the phonies I played...

WOD
VAX (ZAX is good; I always mix them up)
DIMINUTE
SUTURER (which would have been the last play of the game but at that point I was down by 150, so rather than prolong the agony, I just admitted the phony and played SUTURE)

LWFS, if you look at the Facebook ground around you, you'll see a gauntlet has been tossed.
