Okay we've waited long enough. Let's get this thing started.

I need to know Ceetar's name on FB.

I am both excited and terrified. BRING IT indeed.

I sent a friend recommendation to you through FB. Or maybe I recommended you to Ceetar, I'm not so sure?
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jul 06 2010 08:30 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |

Alternatively, you could search within FB (using the field at the top) for "ceetar;" his secret identity is the only reg'lar person name what pops up. I'm all a-tingle, and I didn't even use my Selsun Blue today!
|
seawolf17 Jul 06 2010 08:49 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
How on earth is Edgy a 9-seed? I feel like he kicks my ass by 100 points every game.
|
TheOldMole Jul 06 2010 08:51 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
I got the recom, and sent a friend request to him.
|
Edgy DC Jul 06 2010 08:53 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |

You and you alone, my friend. Everyone else has been eating me for breakfast. I am comforted by the self-serving theory that you and you alone don't cheat.
|
Ceetar Jul 06 2010 08:58 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
|
facebook.com/ceetar would've worked too. I'll assume you're the friend request that's not metsfairy. I'll accept and scrabble-challenge you this evening. (stupid work/facebook filter)

Well, to tell the truth, I only cheat against Edgy.

Oh, did I just drop a 93 point MESTIZO on yer ass, running on the OX in FOX to make MO and EX? Yeah, that's right. Ignore the fact that LWFS is beating me by 100 points, that one is an EXHIBITION MATCH, BITCHES.

God help me-- were it on my cable box, I would probably watch 15-20 minutes of "CPF Scrabble Network" per day.

Ironic, I am damp with excitement about this right now.
|
Fman99 Jul 06 2010 01:09 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
You can expect Edgy to want to go on a rampage, or, even, HEGIRAS, possibly, when he sees my next play. OH NO HE DI-INT!
|
Edgy DC Jul 06 2010 01:12 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Yeah, this guy plays closed-book.

You saying I don't know what a hegira is? I taught Global Studies in a public high school for four years, you know.

This game certainly appears to be the Mecca of competitive first-round CPF Scrabblin', doesn't it? (Wouldn't have gotten that, myself. Always thought it was just "hejira"/"hijira.")

Kong, you did exactly what you're supposed to do. Now I have to figure how to play a challenging rack.

You may as well if Lunchbucket is up for it.
|
metsmarathon Jul 06 2010 09:42 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
well... he may not be up for it anymore - i just laid down a bingo opener with TRAINED.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 07 2010 05:24 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
TRAINED scares me not. My ugmo opening rack on the other hand forces a swap, and so it's onto the Comeback Trail I must travel.
|
metsmarathon Jul 07 2010 07:19 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
yeah, i know. its not like i had any big letters in there, or came up with an unconventional word.

I thought that was you I spotted behind me on the trail.

Getting lots of high-value tiles and no vowels in my game with Kong. The board is very tight.

Edgy DC Jul 07 2010 09:48 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
A lot of blood in the first round, I see.
|
Fman99 Jul 08 2010 04:22 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
|
Indeed, this combined with a paucity of vowels is cramping my style.
|
Willets Point Jul 08 2010 04:26 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Are JCL & mm playing nothing but bingos? This makes me nervous about facing either one of them.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 08 2010 05:30 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
He's had 2 in 5 plays (TRAINED, ROUTINES); I've had one in 4 (FORESEE) plus a double-double for 64. We're both at 40-plus points a turn and the board still has some real estate. Anything can happen!
|
Ceetar Jul 08 2010 06:58 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
I was going to play TOWNEES. I thought about it. I ultimately decided that it wasn't a word, that it'd be townies. *sigh* Would've leapfrogged me into the lead.

Digging out after Fman ope'd with two bingos out of the bag, I've struggled back to take my first (two point) lead, which I fully expect to get thrown back in my face.

Our first result is in. I defeated Kong 353-254 mostly because I got lucky enough to draw the Q,Z, X, J, & K.
|
Kong76 Jul 08 2010 07:16 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Good game, Willet ... close, tight, then phwam ...
|
Willets Point Jul 08 2010 07:56 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Thanks. It was a tough board and a tough game. I think the turning point was JOSTLE when I was finally able to play more than 2-3 tiles in one turn.
|
Frayed Knot Jul 08 2010 07:59 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
NURDS being the only play on that board I wouldn't have recognized as a legit word - or a legit SCRABBLE word anyway.

I read a book last year called American Nerd which tells the history of nerds and in it learned that until the late 1970s the accepted spelling was NURD. I figured that the nerds who compile the SCRABBLE dictionary would count that variation and gambled correctly.
|
Frayed Knot Jul 08 2010 08:20 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Yes, in the SCRABBLE dictionary the definition of NURD just says NERD

John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 08 2010 10:04 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
mm-jcl continues to burn the barns. He threw down JAZZ, also spelling JAR and AWE, for 54, I had a nightmare rack but threw down DIVVY. It's 321-315 with 20 squares in the bag.
|
Edgy DC Jul 09 2010 07:58 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
If my counting is accurate (no sure thing), FMAN is down to thre I's in his rack, with me up by four points.

Willets Point Jul 09 2010 09:47 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
AZURITE is a soft, deep blue copper mineral produced by weathering of copper ore deposits and 71-point bingo that Seawolf has used to put me in a huge hole.

If you haven't noticed, the brackets update automatically in the first post.
|
Edgy DC Jul 09 2010 07:36 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
I'm up 407-394 with each of us holding one tile, waiting on Fman's next move. We'll probably end up passing back and forth, leaving me with a 406-395 win.
|
TheOldMole Jul 09 2010 08:17 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Again...Leiter on Facebook is...?
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 09 2010 09:59 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
And we have our first upset as 5 seed mm knocks JCL to the losers' bracket in a hard fought victory. As usual I played a shitty endgame, extending DIVVY to DIVVYING for a nice score but leaving an open triple (for GROUT) and a handful of vowels it would take too many turns to finish with. 423-412 is your final.
|
Willets Point Jul 10 2010 06:10 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
This means that Kong can challenge JCL for the first Loser's Bracket game. metsmarathon has a long wait for an opponent.

It's been like verbal mud wrestling so far-- sloppy and with nary a toehold to be found-- to be sure. Neither of us would likely see 450 if you gave us 'til the IDES of August.

TheOldMole Jul 11 2010 04:01 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
My game at this point reminds me of a Hagar the Horrible strip, where they're in the middle of a battle, and Lucky Eddie cries out, "We're gonna lose!!!!!!!!!!!!"

TheOldMole Jul 11 2010 04:01 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
How do you do those visual of the completed game? Print screen?
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 11 2010 04:10 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Yes, print screen. Then paste in a photo editor and crop out all but the board and score then host at picasa.

What's the final score, Mole?
|
Fman99 Jul 12 2010 10:04 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |

Edgy beat me, ultimately, by 15-20 points or so. I don't have access to the board here at work but I chose to not win, wisely I think.
|
Fman99 Jul 12 2010 10:29 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Correction - technically we're not done, but Edgy is up 407-394 and I am stuck with that last I and no place to put it.

I'm not sure how I pulled it off, but the bag definitely conspired with me. I did my best to not expose him too many opportuntites to expand his early lead, but the opps were certainly there for him when the letters (fortunately) were not.
And there we sit. We each hold an unplayable letter (G for me, I for him) and are passing back and forth, trying to end the game.
|
Willets Point Jul 12 2010 11:00 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
I think it takes 3 passes by both participants before it automatically ends the game.

Yup! If I have everything correct, the following games should be ready to start or in progress right now: Edgy v. Chad Kong v. Lunchbucket FMan v. Old Mole Willets v. Seawolf Seawolf is kicking my butt so far and it doesn't help that SCRABBLE kicked my word NAPED off the board even though I know it's a valid word (in English if not in SCRABBLE).

What's a NAPED? Or is it the past tense of "to nape"? Either way, I'll bop on over there and put the hammer down.
|
Willets Point Jul 12 2010 01:53 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
NAPED is used in the name of birds like the white naped crane, so I guess it's an adjective describing the neck.

But it's an affectionate naping. Seriously, though, this is some ugly shizz Mole and I have going here-- one bingo between us, and we're down to the last 14 tiles.
|
TheOldMole Jul 12 2010 07:18 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
And I got the bingo, and even with it I'm being slaughtered.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jul 13 2010 12:43 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
And mercifully-- sorta-- it's over. A terrible first date for Mole and me (one bingo, nothing else above 40) ends 376-334, yours truly (and somewhat shame-facedly).
|
Edgy DC Jul 13 2010 05:24 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
And Ochoseis becomes my second opponent to bingo out of the box.

I absolutely suck at anagrams and I had absolutely no idea what bridging meant until Edgy explained it above. I guess that would explain why I didn't enter into this Scrabble tournament. Beating Mole by 101 with 13 tiles left. Some nice plays by myself if I do say so.

The brackets are updated. Lunchbucket awaits the winner of the Edgy/Ceetar clash. Kong is the first participant to depart the tourney, but I'm sure there are some lovely drinks and appetizers awaiting him in the losers' lounge.
I was rating on a more "universal" Scrabble scale. I still think any success I have is from knowing a lot of words and being able to hook them with 2-letter words. If a word doesn't show up when I shuffle my rack, then I'm stuck. And God help when I get the blank or 2 blanks because I have no idea what to do with those things.

OldMole has been eliminated in a 384-312 victory. My best play was dropping FEW in between HEAVE and MATTE, making AFT, VET, and EWE in the process and getting both VET and FEW on the double word.

metsmarathon Jul 20 2010 07:20 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
pretty much. ANTACID was his second play - it set him up with a lead that i was just playing catchup on for most of the rest of the game. i lost momentum in a big way towards the end - WRIT was the backbreaker.
|
Frayed Knot Jul 20 2010 07:24 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
|
ANTACIDS is pretty darn good (or did that come together in stages?) but, for resourcefulness, it's tough to beat NINJA with the 'J' doubled and then tripled. Maybe not as many points as a Bingo, but real creative especially with the hook via the AA
|
Edgy DC Jul 20 2010 07:34 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
No, that's better than a lot of bingos. The typical bingo hits for around 77 points, because you typically need a lot of low-value versatile tiles --- E, R, S, T, etc. --- to score them, so unless you lay them in the Triple Word Score lane, you're usually not scoring big beyond the 50 point kapowie bomb.
|
Willets Point Jul 20 2010 07:37 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
So NINJA was a stealthy assassin.

First few plays of the game as I remember them:
|
Frayed Knot Jul 20 2010 07:59 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
|
Umm, not quite. J = 8; doubling it get you to 16; then tripled = 48 For the whole word, NINJA = [1 + 1 + 1 + (8*2) + 1]*3 or 20 tripled = 60 Then throw in the two more for AA and it's a 62 pointer. It's less than a lot of Bingos will get you, but a good score with a tougher rack. Also an example of why, if you don't know the legal 'two-letters', you're going to lose by several hundred points every time.
|
Edgy DC Jul 20 2010 08:00 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Yeah, I inadvertantly tripled the J initially.

SCRABBLE, for instance, accepts: SCHTICK; SCHTIK; SHTICK; and SHTIK Lord knows what they do with CABALA, KABALA, etc.? oe: a quick check seems to reveal that both 'C' & 'K' are valid along with each variant with single or double 'B' Not double 'L' though, so maybe even they have their limits. Either that or Madonna hasn't yet gotten around to spelling it with a double 'L', something I'm sure would instantly put it into the accepted category.

Chad Ochoseis Jul 20 2010 08:38 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |

Serves you right for playing phonies. Who's knocking those off, the computer or via player challenge? If someone played those against me, I would have challenged PO and probably OPA OWER and WINGE I likely would have assumed are just stupid enough to be actual words, particularly since at this point I'm convinced that virtually anything is a word to the extent that there's very little someone could throw up that I'd be confident enough to challenge out of fear it's real.
|
Edgy DC Jul 21 2010 07:59 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
|
I think you've made your point about stupid words and how you're convinced that everything is a word. The computer knocks them off. I know it's righteous that it happens. Thank you.
I'm up 242-178. I opened up an initial lead slowly by hooking my way up the Double Word Score staircase toward the northeast, getting a lot of thirty-point-type scores hooking three-letter words. RAN/ZA/EN for 18 NUB/NU/UM for 16 GAY/GUM/AB for 24 JOY/JAB/OY for 43. Certainly not inspired play by any means, but my worthy opponent was having trouble getting a good rack together and I built up a decent gap after he traded in. When he bingoed back into it for 60 with POISONER, I was able to reconstruct most of lead two plays later by hooking FINCH off of NO using the H to form NOH, and landing getting a pile of mid-value tiles (FCH) onto the Triple Word Score square for 54 points. If I hang on, that's my turning point, but that's no sure thing, because the board has really opened up and we're throwing real punches now. The key may be who gets that second blank.

I definitely do not bingo as well on the board. It takes too long, honestly. Online you can shuffle tiles over and over and take as long as you want to play. I've shuffled for ten minutes, seen nothing, then come back two hours later and suddenly something clicks. Can't do that in person.
|
Chad Ochoseis Jul 28 2010 10:43 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
I got hooked on Scrabble playing timed online games around 1996, and played in a few National Scrabble Association tournaments in 1997-98 (kicked butt at the novice level, but never made it beyond middle of the pack at the intermediate level). Timed tournament games are played with a chess clock, and each player gets 25 minutes in total, with a 10 point overtime penalty per minute.

Hey, if you're breaking 300, you're doing okay. That's an all-time ass-whupping.

I go Heil! pbbtt!! in der FURORE's face.

It will be an Ochoseis-Seawolf final.

Great tourney, and great job by Willets organizing it.

Willets Point Aug 13 2010 09:48 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Great final match up. Chad rematches against the only person who beat him. If Chad wins then it essentially becomes a best of 3 series.

BRING IT.

John Cougar Lunchbucket Aug 13 2010 10:08 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Nothing against the Wolf (I can't beat either of yas), but I'm rooting for Ochoseis to force the "if" game here, then all bets are off.

Consider it brought. And Bucket played a fine game...was within a few points until the last three turns or so when I started getting good racks and he got V's and W's.

This is like waiting two weeks for the Super Bowl. The ESPN guys are going to have to interview Seawolf's 5th-grade teacher to fill the time.

Sorry, all. It's been pretty uneventful, actually. Here's where we sit as of right now:

One of the tightest games I've ever played. I got the 372, so the tourney is down to one deciding game.
|
seawolf17 Aug 21 2010 06:11 PM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
Heckuva game, actually. No bingoes, nothing fancy. My rack went to crap at the end; all Is and Us and Os with nothing fun to play with. I thought FOCI would save me, but I was out of bullets after that.
|
seawolf17 Aug 24 2010 10:04 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
We're into the finale, and despite TWO Chad phonies, I just can't put the pieces together to pull away. I've been sitting on the X since my opening rack, and finally played it for a 143-96 lead.

seawolf17 Aug 25 2010 06:58 AM Re: 2010 CPF SCRABBLE Tourney |
TEARDOWN off the T in TIMID just gave me a 100-point lead. A top-of-the-sixth-inning grand slam, if you will.

90 points, dammit. NINETY! Fittingly, I answered with WOE.

My "friends list" is not populating when I want to start a game. Anyone else having this issue?

And that... is that. 487-293.

It would be extremely difficult for it to not be closer than that final score. And it wasn't just about the phonies. Congratulations, Seawolf. FWIW, the phonies I played... WOD VAX (ZAX is good; I always mix them up) DIMINUTE SUTURER (which would have been the last play of the game but at that point I was down by 150, so rather than prolong the agony, I just admitted the phony and played SUTURE)

LWFS, if you look at the Facebook ground around you, you'll see a gauntlet has been tossed.
