IGT 7/24/10 - Mets at Dodgers - Game On!

I know that it's the Second Spitter's turn, but I'm not sure whether he's awake and the game has already started.

The Mets fail to score in the top of the first.

Re: IGT 7/24/10 - Mets at Dodgers - Game On!

I know it's hot and all but I've already seen three instances of a distinct lack of Met hustle:

Reyes failing to field Furcal's single in the first; Castillo failing to run after Pelfrey's errant pickoff throw; and Pagan failing to chase after DeWitt's triple.

Totally unacceptable.

I don't care if it's Furball vs Jamey Carroll, you can't be walking the bags loaded and leaving Ollie no room for error.

Now all we have to do is get a fucking hit sometime in the next hour or so and we may be OK.

So, Frankie is the last pitcher remaining in the Mets pen. Which means that Oliver is probably in the game until the Mets have a lead that needs to be blown.

Holdin K-Rod back for the save Jerry?
WARM UP THE HOT SEAT!

I guess you had to try to get as much as possible out of Ollie.
And I would have to think situations like this is why he's still here.
Wouldn't wanna use Dicky today.
Can't gamble K-Rod might be needed for more than 2 innings.
You're not supposed to go there.

Re: IGT 7/24/10 - Mets at Dodgers - Game On!

Needing a baserunner desperately and facing two guys walking 4.4 and 7.1 BB/9 each, and sporting a cumulative WHIP dangerously close to 2, the Mets' 1-6 hitters saw 14 pitches total in the 12th and 13th innings.

Yeah, the approach might be a bit off.

because he's a fan favorite. and its more important to mets fans that we honor the 86ers rather than looking at silly things like ability and accomplishment.

Re: IGT 7/24/10 - Mets at Dodgers - Game On!

Those late (and extra) inning at-bats by the Mets were just AWFUL, save perhaps Pagan's walk off of Broxton. They looked (and played) like they had given up. Forget the strategy failures, or the lack of hitting or the long roadtrip, that's got to stop.

I think struggles on a long roadtrip is a perfect example of the self-fufilling prophecy. Everybody looks at the schedule, sees 11 games on the west coast and automatically starts thinking about the travel, and the being-away-from-home and that of course, it's going to be tough and the team is going to do badly...and then set themselves up to do just that.

I've had a fantastic time following around the team on this roadtrip but getting the chance to watch them up close for an extended period of time here has left me very unhappy in the effort and energy being put forth. Losses happen but what they're doing is unacceptable.

Re: IGT 7/24/10 - Mets at Dodgers - Game On!

It's perilously close to 1991 out there. Mets left town in July in pretty good shape -- 53-38, 4 games out -- and came back from Cali with a 2-7 road trip in their back pocket. Lost their next five at home, managed two wins against first-place Pittsburgh and then endured another nightmare road trip to the middle East teams. One more loss followed and, bam, 57-61, 12-1/2 back, season essentially over. That's a 4-23 stretch.

You can find all kinds of precedent like that in Mets history without looking very hard, sadly. They looked lethargic then, they strive for lethargy now.
