Kwiz on Your Opening Day Mets
Edgy DC Jul 19 2010 02:43 PM |
Twenty-five Mets, good men all, have started on opening day at two different positions in different years.

Hubie's conversion to short came late in '84 season upon acquisition of Knight and injury to Santana, and he was gone before Opening Day '85. (Thinking out loud on injuries and timelines.)

Benny didn't have more than one Opening Day start, if he had that. It would have been 2001. 2000 was Japan with Henderson, Hamilton and Bell -- Benny barely made the team, but sealed his place with his pinch-hit grand slam that won the season's second game.

G-Fafif Jul 19 2010 03:22 PM Re: Kwiz on Your Opening Day Mets |

I'm pretty sure (but not dead certain) 2000 was Hamilton's only Opening Day start. He was battling injuries in 2001 and Payton was the incumbent CF.

Vic Sage Jul 19 2010 03:26 PM Re: Kwiz on Your Opening Day Mets |
before Kong, there was Art Shamsky, also a starter at the corners (1b/LF/Rf).
|
G-Fafif Jul 19 2010 03:27 PM Re: Kwiz on Your Opening Day Mets |

As I'm thinking about this, Mookie wouldn't have started in left on Opening Day, because his LF experience was mostly limited to '86 and after that we had Kevin McReynolds. I vaguely recall him in RF on Opening Day 1981 however, to go with his many starts in CF.

G-Fafif Jul 19 2010 03:29 PM Re: Kwiz on Your Opening Day Mets |
Not super confident on this one, but Tim Foli 2B & SS. I think Foli was at second to begin '78 and eventually switched positions with Flynn, which is where they would have started '79.

G-Fafif Jul 20 2010 03:37 PM Re: Kwiz on Your Opening Day Mets |
The awesome guy who did none of it for the Mets was Charlie Neal.

Good job on Neal. Were you mentally searching through Casey's kids?
|
G-Fafif Jul 20 2010 07:05 PM Re: Kwiz on Your Opening Day Mets |
|
With Justin Turner emerging as the 141st third baseman in Mets history, I was reminded anew there were a lot of early Met infielders who did a rotation at third despite being thought of as second basemen or shortstops. Neal crossed my mind yesterday, today's hints drove him home.

Can't answer, as I cheated and looked it up. Your earlier clue wasn't terribly helpful, considering he played in another league and in another country, although accurate.
