I Give Up

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 25 2010 01:55 PM

I give up a few times every year, but after yesterday's game was the first time I'd officially given up in 2010. I've supported these guys through one cockpunch after another but feel as a fan I'm now drifting to that realm where I want them to get what they deserve, not what I want for them.

Sorry to be such a wet blanket. I thought for sure the Mets would be playing better by now but they're not and they broke me.

I give up.

In my experience, give-ups are typcially followed by just enough teasing to get you back in.

Unfortunately, yes. They'll get five out of six this week at home so we're all excited about going down to play the Braves and Phillies, at which point they'll lose five out of six again.

Eff you, Mets. Eff you.

That is pretty much the way I feel right now. I was afraid I was the only one that was losing faith in the teams chances to seriously contend for a spot in the post-season. I hold out hope that the team will start hitting again, but I fully expect that Jerry will kill most potential rallies by bunting repeatedly.

Give Up?
You can't give up!
Did we give up when the Germans attacked Pearl Harbor?

These are the New York Mets.
The Mets of You Gotta' Believe.

OK, so right now they couldn't score with a passed out hooker.
But they are professional baseball players.
Its a slump.
All teams have them.

Now they're coming home.
Welcome them.
Love them.
Root for them.
After all, they are our New York Mets.

And don't you ever forget it.

Re: I Give Up

2010 has been a rollercoaster, but when they have played well, they have exceeded any expectation I had for them in March.

A game over .500 in late July is too soon for me to "give up". I'll still be surprised if they actually pull anything off this season, but I think they have a couple nice streaks left in them...which is enough for me to keep watching.

That's pretty much how the Mets seem to have suggested we take it. Got a very telling week coming up though, after that all the stress may be off.

Re: I Give Up

C'mon, in 1951 the Giants trailed by 13 1/2 games on August 11.

The 1969 Mets were behind by 9 1/2 games on August 14.

This team has already had TWO 8-game winning streaks and I don't think we've seen the best of what they can do yet

Are you going to be like Yankee fans and say "O this team is dominating everything therefore they suck and they're worthy of my scorn!" Are you going to be like THOSE pussies?!?!?! Or are you going to be a fucking METS fan!

You're made of stronger stuff. Let your balls drop down in your scrotum and stand proud!

Held out as long as I could. I'm all in on all out. Fifty one games for gits and shiggles, as it were, and that's better than not having fifty one games of Mets baseball. I'll go, I'll watch, I'l listen, I'll keep on keepin' on.

But my towel has been thrown in. Can't beat either of your must-beat rivals a series in their ballpark; can't win two in a row for seven weeks...no. Not happening.

Thanks for the brief spurt, 2010 Mets. Thanks for that afternoon in June (after your last two-game winning streak) when you were in first. Thanks for showing us these kids and making us think, legitimately, that there might be something there for next year and beyond.

Thanks, but no thanks.

That's fine, but they're still going to need help and/or they can't have a hot streak and then screw it up at the end of the month. They played the Braves in a four game series starting August 30th. Even if they only make a little progress (say only play 1-2 games better than the Braves until then) the season won't actually be in the tank. There are so many games left, particularly against division rivals. (7 with Braves, 9 with Phillies). They certainly haven't looked like it'll matter, but that's why they play the games..

Eff you, Mets. Eff you.

Okay, so I was off by a little tiny bit.

I don't know. I want desperately to give up, to enjoy the end of summer without the burden of another Mets disappointment.

But I just can't. Ultimately, the fans of 29 teams go through this every year in some way eventually. Sure, it'd be nice for us to be part of that 30th group, but maybe this isn't the year.

Or maybe, just maybe... it is. 16 games against the two teams we're chasing is enticing; and the players on the field are guys I want to root for. They've been on both sides of this kind of collapse before; why not this year? I'm still with you, fellas.

Re: I Give Up

I only made one trip to Citi Field this year, back in April. I've since seen the Mets three times on the road, once in Baltimore and twice in San Juan. I may be done for the year. I won't have a chance to go for the remainder of August, and I have a hunch that by September Citi Field will be 1982 dreary. But perhaps I'll be tempted to take in a game if there's a promotion that appeals to my kids. A less crowded stadium would make a visit to the Mets Hall of Fame more pleasant. (We skipped it in April because the line was crazy long.)
