Going to see Football at Fenway tomorrow night, Celtic FC vs. Sporting Clube de Portugal. One team is identified with Irish nationalism and the other is Portuguese, I don't know who they expect to attract to this game from Boston. Sarcasm-aside, which players on these two clubs I should be watching as I don't recognize any names?
|
metirish Jul 20 2010 08:52 AM Re: Futbol '10 |
Both clubs are a shadow of their former selves. Celtic play in a league where they and rivals Rangers are the biggest clubs by far and both would love nothing more than to move to the EPL, there was some semi serious talk about that a few years ago but it's not going to happen. It's all about TV money and in Scotland it's paltry compared to the EPL, thus they trawl the world for bargains hoping to strike gold with some players. Rangers are so broke they haven't bought a player since 2008.

The Second Spitter Jul 20 2010 09:00 AM Re: Futbol '10 |
Both wear very distinctive, yet identical jerseys.

Good argument for Rangers and Celtic to join the EPL, although they may have missed the boat now.

Chelsea's offseason-- letting Ballack go and losing Joe Cole and Belletti... and possibly Drogba, with only Bennayoun in the fold so far-- is giving me the same discomfiting feeling that those of Flushing's Finest usually do.
|
metirish Jul 20 2010 09:26 AM Re: Futbol '10 |
The EPL wants nothing to do with the sectarian nature of both clubs, and they don't need them.

I don't see how just two teams from Scotland could join the EPL without integrating the English and Scottish football pyramids anyhow.

A Boy Named Seo Jul 20 2010 10:02 AM Re: Futbol '10 |
Joe Cole going to L'pool was good for their brand, I think. He could've gone a couple other places & played CL this year, but went for the Red$ in$tead, but I'm $ure he had hi$ rea$ons. Probably helps them keep Torres a bit longer, in the long run. Have fun in Europa Cup, Joe.
|
The Second Spitter Jul 20 2010 10:04 AM Re: Futbol '10 |
The idea was that they woud leave the Scottish pyramid and enter the English pyramid. There's already 3 Welsh teams in the English League and 1 English team in the Scottish League, so it's not without precedent.

|
Willets Point Sep 14 2010 01:08 PM Re: Futbol '10 |
Didn't look like Panathinaikos could touch the ball except to clear but then Gouvou breaks away and scores at 20 minutes.
|
Willets Point Sep 14 2010 01:32 PM Re: Futbol '10 |
David Villa and Messi again have seen to it that the score is 3-1 at the half. Despite conceding the early goal to Panathinaikos, Barça is dominating the game.

Gutless performance. Went to see the Intrepid at halftime.
|
Willets Point Sep 14 2010 05:31 PM Re: Futbol '10 |
Messi had a chance for a hat trick on a PK but made a weak shot that was easily blocked. Didn't matter much as Barça ran up the score with 2 second-half goals for a 5-1 win.

So you figured you'd go see 'The Intrepid' on account of the footballers not being intrepid enough?
|
The Second Spitter Sep 14 2010 08:35 PM Re: Futbol '10 |
|||
With 14% possession, "insipid" is the apt description. After yesterday's Jets debacle (and seeing the Mets lose half-a-dozen times) losing to those Catalan cunts in such a manner was difficult to swallow.
There's no connection with the Scottish club Celtic. I've read conflicting stories. The football team was formed in 1908 and they originally wore red. The first team photo with players wearing the shamrock was dated 1919, but the shamrock was probably used before that when they adopted green (symbolising "hope") as their official color. The reason for the change was to either to pay tribute to a visiting Irish team or to honor another Greek club which was set-up by an Irishman. Interestingly. their basketball club (probably the most dominant team in Europe in the last 10 years) formed in 1922, refer to themselves as the "Original Celtics". (Boston were founded after WW2) There have been 6 players that have played for both teams, including 'Nique.

Wayne Rooney wants out of Manchester United, Lorg Ferg sounded shocked at a press conference today. Rooney joins a long list of players that have fallen foul of Lord Ferg and that was that, this one stings because 1) he's young(24) , 2) when Beckham fell foul of Lord ferg there were ready made players to take over....Ronaldo being one, when he left there was Rooney , this team needs an overhaul and can't really do it because they are leveraged to the hilt, thanks Glazers.
