Going to see Football at Fenway tomorrow night, Celtic FC vs. Sporting Clube de Portugal. One team is identified with Irish nationalism and the other is Portuguese, I don't know who they expect to attract to this game from Boston. Sarcasm-aside, which players on these two clubs I should be watching as I don't recognize any names?

Re: Futbol '10

Both clubs are a shadow of their former selves. Celtic play in a league where they and rivals Rangers are the biggest clubs by far and both would love nothing more than to move to the EPL, there was some semi serious talk about that a few years ago but it's not going to happen. It's all about TV money and in Scotland it's paltry compared to the EPL, thus they trawl the world for bargains hoping to strike gold with some players. Rangers are so broke they haven't bought a player since 2008.

Sporting Lisbon are one of the great old teams of Europe , both they and Celtic have very similar color schemes with green being dominant.

Celtic should have a few Irish internationals with them , Aiden McGeady, Darren O'Day and Daryl Murphy. Greek international Georgios Samaras is one you might remember from the WC , not sure what players are in the traveling squad though.

The manager is Neil Lennon who was forced to quit playing for Northern Ireland because as a catholic he was not what the fan base wanted , he was abused by the home fans something terrible , attacked in the streets at one point.

Re: Futbol '10

Both wear very distinctive, yet identical jerseys.

Sporting -
I think they recently sold Moutinho who was their franchise player and replaced him with a Chiliean dude called Jaime Valdes who's had good scouting reports. Other than that,
Djalo and Maniche come to mind (although the latter is now past his best). They also have a Montenegrin player who's meant to be quite good, although his name escapes me.

Celtic -
Samaras and Fortune were their top-scorer last year, although I seriously doubt the former will play because due to WC exertions.

Good argument for Rangers and Celtic to join the EPL, although they may have missed the boat now.

The idea was that they woud leave the Scottish pyramid and enter the English pyramid. There's already 3 Welsh teams in the English League and 1 English team in the Scottish League, so it's not without precedent.

I was actually having a debate with an EU Constitutional Law lawyer that any team within the EU could join theoretically join any other EU league and to prevent them doing so would be a restriction on the Freedom of Establishment (Art 43).

5,000 gold-plated Frank Lampard iPods to be "melted down"

Oh how different it would have been if England had won the World Cup. St George's flags would still be flying, we'd probably still be out celebrating, and shed-loads of tacky products would have been sold simply because they carried the names of footballers.

But alas they didn't. Which is why 5,000 gold-plated Frank Lampard endorsed Apple iPods - complete with his signature laser-etched on the back - will now be "melted down" after failing to sell.

The garish 24-carat gold gadgets had been launched by the Chelsea ace at Harrods prior to the World Cup and it was hoped fans would snap them up for up to £599 each - with Frank's royalties going to charity.

However, after England's early exit from the South African tournament, people have been unsurprisingly reluctant to part with their cash for the pricey iPod Touch and bosses say they've been a flop.

It's understood the devices, produced by Goldgenie (a firm backed by BBC Dragon James Caan), will now undergo a chemical process to recover their precious metal, so it can be used again, in golden Hello Kitty branded gadgets.

With 14% possession, "insipid" is the apt description. After yesterday's Jets debacle (and seeing the Mets lose half-a-dozen times) losing to those Catalan cunts in such a manner was difficult to swallow.

There's no connection with the Scottish club Celtic.

I've read conflicting stories. The football team was formed in 1908 and they originally wore red. The first team photo with players wearing the shamrock was dated 1919, but the shamrock was probably used before that when they adopted green (symbolising "hope") as their official color. The reason for the change was to either to pay tribute to a visiting Irish team or to honor another Greek club which was set-up by an Irishman.

Interestingly. their basketball club (probably the most dominant team in Europe in the last 10 years) formed in 1922, refer to themselves as the "Original Celtics". (Boston were founded after WW2) There have been 6 players that have played for both teams, including 'Nique.

Have to say the new Pommie jersey is one of the best I've seen in ages, but geez Louise, their previous one only came out in April.

Designer's sales pitch wrote:
The shirt, like the previous England home and the current England away, is inspired by English tailoring heritage, but with the latest in innovative, technical design. Constructed from two distinct cotton-based fabrics, the shirt is thicker for protection on the front and back, and more flexible in the under-arm, increasing movement.

The neckline is perhaps the most eye-catching aspect of the new kit, with a square collar accompanied by a longer, more open neckline which increases the amount of movement in the garment across the chest. This is particularly important for players when they’re running and changing direction quickly on the pitch.

With the New Fabric Of England graphic on the shoulder and a blue Umbro logo on the chest, the new home shirt certainly adds colour to the England palette. This continues with the shorts, which are royal blue, and the socks, which are white with a royal blue trim. Both are developed into an ergonomic shape that again provides a fantastic fit for the players and aids their on-pitch movement.
