A washed-up songwriter takes a crack at piloting her own material, and sells about a billion units of disc-shaped wax. Which was the top track for your playlist?

1. "I Feel the Earth Move"

2. "So Far Away"

3. "It's Too Late"

4. "You've Got a Friend"

5. "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" (latter-day live, couldn't find any videos with the album version)

6. "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" (live in 1971)

7. Other: If you are a Carole King afficianado or afficianada, you may prefer one of these alterna-tracks
"Home Again"
"Beautiful"
"Way Over Yonder"
"Where You Lead"
"Smackwater Jack"
"Tapestry"

Re: King of Your Desert Island

Those are all great songs. I chose Earth, but there is no bad choice among those 6 songs.

Ooooh! Songs that I know!

I voted for "Love me Tomorrow." (Did Carole King record that? I'm only familiar with the Shirelles version.)

Re: King of Your Desert Island

'Will You Still Love Me, Tomorrow' is merely one of the great pop songs ever written and, therefore, my choice here.

King wrote it, co-wrote it actually, with then husband Gerry Goffin. She & he were professional songwriters* a number of years prior to her striking out oon her own with a performing/recording career.

* A sampling of Goffin/King co-writes from the early/mid '60s
The Loco-motion
One Fine Day
Chains
Take Good Care of My Baby
Go Away Little Girl
Up on the Roof
I'm Into Something Good
Pleasant Valley Sunday
(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman

When the letters turn blue, and there's an underscore, that means there's a link.

You've got a friend is very meaningful to me, so I'd rip that one.

Too hard to choose, or you don't like cats?

Re: King of Your Desert Island

I'm not a huge Carole King fan...she doesn't do much to improve the path that Laura Nyro cleared a couple of years before her. But she's the most famous graduate of my junior high school (unless you'd place Rico Petrocelli ahead of her), and I've got to root for the home team.

And "Really Rosie" was, and probably still is, the coolest kids' special in history.

So, two cheers for the former Carole Klein, and one vote for "So Far Away".

Re: King of Your Desert Island

This was Mike Post-theme rough.

Went with "So Far Away." Given the right conditions, that song will play in a Mobius loop for days in my head, and I won't even mind.

On days when I take my backup transit-route to work, I end up walking by the Brill Building. About 3 times out of 4, I end up with a King-Goffin or Bacharach/David song in my head (on that 4th day, it's Mann-Weill or Sedaka, and I usually don't feel so good).

A path further extended by Gail Martin, "the rock & roll Carole King."

Upon reading the title before opening this post, I thought this was going to be an Elvis thread.

I'm glad it's not.

I also went with So Far Away. Her songs are all pretty closely lumped together in my mind and none really stand out above or below the others all that much. Though I did give more props to the songs I associate with her performing, fairly or not.

Re: King of Your Desert Island

I would pay good money to see, say, "The G.G. Allin Carole King."

I wonder whether a Venn diagram of "People who Hate Cats" and "People who hate Carole King" would just be a circle.

I picked "So Far Away" because it seems like a perfect melancholy song with a perfect arrangement.

"Far Away So Close" has come from behind. Down 4-2, it now leads 5-4.

I'm thinking Seawolf prefers cats over Carole King.

Nice Butch Walker video, by the way.

Re: King of Your Desert Island

I love this album! When my son was an infant I would put this record on and dance with him so he'd calm down and sleep.
I voted for It's Too Late but the whole album I love and reminds me of the 72 Mets when I hear any of the songs.

Anything that reminds me of my son and/or the Mets is a highlight for me

Re: King of Your Desert Island

I went with the biggest hit, "It's Too Late" over "I Feel The Earth Move" because of concerns that somewhere on this island is a volcano.
