Further to my suggestion in the IGT, and since we like to convey the image of a progressive, up-to-date with technology, even hip, organization, I wish to place the issue of a CPF iphone app on the agenda.

1. I'll throw up a poll shortly to see how many people here actually own iphone/ipads.

2. Is there anybody on this board with the remote capabilities of doing this themselves (or know somebody who can write one for us)?

3. Failing #2, I'll be prepared to (mostly) finance the development of one (with admins approval obviously) -- I can't image it will be the most complicated app going around. Then whoever wants to use it can purchase it from the app store. (By making it available at the app store we can link the word "Mets" to it , and potentially increase CPF membership)

4. Alternatively, if advertising is used within the app it will be available for free.

Thoughts please.

I'm a programmer. I've never done mobile stuff, though I would like to learn. I'm sure I don't have the time right now though.

the forums do work fine in mobile Safari/web though.

I have a Droid, so I wouldn't use an iPhone app.

I don't have an iPhone either...and doubt I ever will.

I will most likely get a Droid in October though.

All I can do on my cell phone is make and receive phone calls. Oh, it also has a camera, and sometimes it takes pictures of the inside of my pocket.

I didn't know phones still did that.

Re: CPF iphone app

I have an Android device and an iPod Touch , how would an app be better than going to the site from my device?

What features would be needed to make it great, I really like the idea.

Re: CPF iphone app

I have an iPhone and I sometimes do post to the CPF from it. I would buy a CPF app if one existed, but alas, I am no programmer.

Don't know what it entails, but some sites are 'optimized for mobile devices,' where they determine you're using a phone and redirect you to a version of the site designed for screens of that size. That would be cool as well.

Re: CPF iphone app

I'm a CrackBerry head ... I can read the forum just fine on it ...
gotta zoom and scroll a bunch but it's functional enough for me.
I imagine it looks even better on a wide screen applephone or one
of those droidphones so I can't see the need for an app and it's
probably not possible in our current situation anyways.

I had to select the final option, but I don't really think you're a pretentious snot.

That would require a Bluetooth.

I'm also a "neither" and voted for the snot option only because it was the best fit. I don't even know what a "Droid" is, and I have no plans to buy any iDevices.

Re: CPF iphone app

The CPF optimized for mobile viewing doesn't look good, at least not on Opera Mini and Dolphin browser. I find that to be true for most sites.

Prominent examples of droids in Star Wars include R2-D2 and C-3PO. R2-D2 is an astromech droid, a class of droid used aboard spaceships for repairs and navigational computing. Protocol droids assist in communications and etiquette, and can also carry out administrative tasks;[4] the protocol droid C-3PO is "fluent in over six million forms of communication."[5] Most protocol droids have a humanoid shape similar to that of the people around whom they work.[4]

Re: CPF iphone app

I would love one of those droids.

I am in full support of having a more easily viewable mobile presence, whether through an iPhone/Droid app or whatever. I currently own neither device, but am more likely to go the Droid route. It would be wonderful exposure for us.

Re: CPF iphone app

Before we start getting into talks of exposure and potential increase
in membership I think I'd like to just say that in our current situation here
the odds of this happening are about 10,000 to 1.

What's our current situation?

We're running a software platform that promises tons of configuration examples
on the internet with pages and pages of code and we can't even embed a you-
tube video yet. Yes, there are ways (examples) of creating a mobile platform for
phpBB3 but the discussions on them (by serious phpBB3 geeks) doesn't sound like
something we have the time to get mixed up in. I think the iPhone would need
even another platform so what are we going to look into several mobile apps?

I personally think we'd find more posters by everyone buying and wearing a Chicks
dig the stand-up triple! ©
with our URL on the back but they're not available yet lol.

generate a little more fan interest than improved mobile functionality.

There are problems when posting a reply on the last post of a thread page. Basically the text box doesn't scroll so you can't actually see what you are typing. There are also problems when you try to zoom in.

Sorry for the lack of focus, I have a crappass camera ...

Pages look ok, I mean the screen is small ... but it's a phone ...

Re: CPF iphone app

I, like Ben Grimm, have your basic phone for phone calls and voice mail. It has a camera, but I really don't need that. Someday, I'll join the 21st century and likely get a Droid platform phone, but I'm not really in a hurry. Maybe when my current phone dies. Until that time, my Motorola W385 flip phone does all I truly need it to do.
Mine isn't with Verizon, but otherwise that's my basic phone.

Haha, hilarious! (You're a funny guy!)

With Seo's vote - which will come any day now, that's 4 for iphone + not sure what irish voted (let's say 5 -- this is how Republicans administer votes) ... actually this thread's got me thinking, I may pick-up a Droid while I'm over in the US...

Re: CPF iphone app

Good movie, the youtube link kinda crapped out for me half
way through. I wanted to illustrate that the forum works on
hand held devices. It works on droids, blackberrys, and fman
earlier in the thread said he posts from an iphone. Maybe he
uses a different browser, ask him, I know nothing Apple what-
soever.

Don't get me wrong, it's flattering to the CPF that someone
wants to follow it on a hand held device on the the other
side of the globe with a special app but it's not doable at
this point in time.

The Crane Pool Forum is specifically designed to allow Americans to goof off from work during work hours on work computers. In America.

Re: CPF iphone app

I think the easiest plan would be to craft an alternate stylesheet for mobile browsers. This would render similarly on both iphones and and android phones.

the problems with creating apps for the iphone is their long vetting process, whereas the problem with creating apps for android is their fragmentation. You have high percentages of android users using either version 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, and now 2.2 of the android OS, all with differing screen resolutions.

A solution for iPhone , Android ,Nokia and Blackberry users.

I have been using Tapatalk for a few days to go to a forum from the phone, it's great , the app costs $2:99 and the forums I have visited render very well on the device.

I would hope the admins give this serious consideration, if I am reading it correctly it's free and us the users would buy the pro app like I did or use a free version.
