Horrible Umpiring 2010 (Cont'd)

If the MFPs make the playoffs by one game, it will be Thursday's game, with the MVP being Bob Davidson who ruled foul Gaby Sanchez's clearly fair double in the bottom of the ninth. Hanley Ramirez was running (not jogging) from second and the game should have been over. But Davidson simply stopped watching the path of the ball after it flew over the bag and before it landed fair on its first bounce. It was never foul except in Bob Davidson's lack of interest.

Eff the Marlins, but still, they wuz robbed.

That was pretty bad - and Davidson definitely made his call too quickly.
The ball looked like it was slanting foul but it never did. It was fair by maybe six inches or so but it was right in front of a not-looking Davidson when it hit.

The other game today that ended on a messed up situation was TB & Minn.
Rays score 6 in the 8th (5 with 2 outs, the last 4 on a GS from light-hitting Jason Bartlett) to tie a game they trailed 6-0. Then in top 9, Minny got a couple on w/2 outs and popped one in the infield for a sure 3rd out ... except the ball hits off the catwalk up by the roof and falls untouched just behind the mound. Local ground rules say that ball is in play so the Twinkies got one on that play and followed with a single for another. Held on to win 8-6
Don't want that game to be the one that hands the MFYs the pennant either.

I guess you have to credit MLB for not only putting the bad on their website, but highlighting it under "Must C: Controversial":

Another lousy call determines a game, yet there are no repercussions for the umpires.

Pretty funny to go from the Marlins feed where they're opening veins in the tv booth to the Phillies feed where they're preserving the ambiguity of the call in the face of clear visual evidence.

You mean like the Mauer double in the playoffs that was ruled foul and may have shifted that series?

Dude, I'm still pissed about the Jeffrey Maier call.

The other messed up thing about that Marlins/Phils game was that the Phils originally tied it with 2 runs in the top of the 9th and still had runners on at 1st & 3rd with no outs.
But then a ground-out/tag play at home was out #1. Then Werth gets picked off at 2nd. Then a caught stealing ends the inning. Three outs via three separate plays in just one official AB is a tough thing to do. To then win that same game after a sure-looked-like-it double gets negated is even tougher.
It's like both teams plus the ump kept figuring out ways to blow it.

Awful job by Tom McCarthy. It's an obvious mistake but he couldn't even admit it. Chris Wheeler knew it.

"It looked like it went around the bag, and then landed fair!"

Thereby defying the laws of physics. Come on, fellas.

They could use a little Henry Blanco.

By the way, anytime someone has something bad to say about Wayne Hagin, I remember Tom McCarthy. I don't usually have venom for announcers but I could not stand this fucking prick. I could not believe how much he seemed to be actively rooting for Philadelphia during the collapse of 2007. Then I found out he had been the Phillies announcer for five years, and claimed to bleed red and blue. When he took the Philadelphia job, he talked about coming home to the team he loves, bla bla bla.

Asshole.

Tom McCarthy actually did something really nice for one of Little Solo's best friends earlier this year, so he's probably a great guy and I'll always remember him for what he did.

But, yeah, I wasn't sad when he left the NY booth. And he totally punted that call last night.
