Hahn, Sr. (split)

My dad passed away this morning, at age 82. I am comforted by the fact that he leaves behind 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren who can share memories of the wonderful life he lived.

A quick note on dad: he taught me baseball and the love of baseball. You know the old cliche of the kid in scruffy clothes scrounging a nickel to hop on the subway, who then sneaks into the ball game? Well that was dad. He adored his Brooklyn Dodgers, and took the subway to Ebbets Field whenever he could...no small trick for a kid who lived in the Bronx in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. He loved to recount stories (quite probably embellished, but aren't all the best stories?) about Duke, and Jackie, and of course, his favorite, Pee Wee Reese. Had I been born a decade and a half earlier, there would have been no dirtier words in our house than 'Sal Maglie.' As a Dodger fan, he hated the Yankees, so I guess that's how we ended up heading out to Shea to get our baseball fix. But while he hated the Yankees, he could never embrace the Mets. A part of his baseball soul was lost when the Dodgers headed out to LA. A new team to root for? That would be like finding a new wife, he couldn't do it. But he made damn sure I wasn't an MFY fan...thanks Dad.

I am not the most religious nor totally faith-less man but I like to think that if there is a better place for us, right now dad is in [u:8zpfr9f7]his [/u:8zpfr9f7]better place, on a crystal clear afternoon, sitting in the Ebbets first base grandstand with a Schaefer in one hand and a pretzel in the other, watching Jackie leg out a double, Gil ripping one over the left field wall, Campy blasting one off the Abe Stark sign.

And while you're there, Dad, slip the usher a fiver so that when my time comes, you've got a seat waiting for me right next to you.

Re: Bring Out Your Dead, 2010

Thanks for sharing your memories. I'm very sorry for your loss. That sounds like one. full. life.

One amazing thing for me about the internet was to find out how close to accurate some of my father's best baseball stories were.

I hope you leave your survivors with such a rich legacy as your dad has left for you. Let us konw what we can do. We're here for youse.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Solo. Hopefully you dad got to a game at Citi Field and it brought back some of those Ebbets memories!

Re: Hahn, Sr. (split)

My condolences as well. The "Bring Out Your Dead" thread (and its spinoffs) is a lot more somber when the deaths are of people we actually know, as compared to random famous people.

Never made it to Citi together, his eyesight had been poor for a while. Our last game together was this one [url]http://www.ultimatemets.com/gamedetail.php?gameno=7132 an afternoon game at Shea that may have been the last time we saw the great Pedro. I think this was his last start before the one in Fenway.

Re: Hahn, Sr. (split)

Sorry for your loss Hahn. I'm sure you, and I, aren't the only ones whose love of baseball was handed directly down from their own father.

Re: Hahn, Sr. (split)

I wish we could all be one big sponge and help you absorb your loss.
And to a certain extent, a small measure and as much as possible, we are.

My heart goes to you because, like our own death, if your fortunate and live long enough, losing
your parents is an inevitable fact of life.

This does not make it any easier or dull the loss.
You can smile in the sense that you know he had a good and full life.
But it does not make that final goodbye any easier.

Your dad is smiling down on you right now.

I selected this for my moms funeral back in December and I'd like to share it:
