On our recent rip we decided that we would bring luggage that could be taken on the plane as a carry-on, a few of those small sized suitcases and backpacks did the trick, get our boarding passes form the vending machines and then only need to queue up for security , makes life a lot easier.

At the security check point they take the shampoo and shaving cream can from my carry-on , I should have known not to take that, before though that would have gone in the checked bags. The security girl then makes a big deal out of some items for Lorcan. Whatever just dump the freaking things I say to her.

It wasn't until we were on the plane that I realized they never even opened my camera bag . I had a swiss army knife in there . In another bag I had a monopod , two items that could be used as weapons if I were that way inclined.

Coming back through Ft Lauderdale we had zero issues with security , my camera bag went through the machine without incident.

I dunno, maybe swiss army knives are OK to take on board?

Nope, had my confiscated at long beach airport last September. Had I known I could ask/demand that they mail it to me, I would've, but I was in a rush and everyone else was already through screening.

I despise airline security to the depths of my soul.

oh, and did you hear now they want to know your name/info before hand so they can do thorough background searches (presumably this is why anyway)

I had a metal corkscrew confiscated at the airport. How the hell you got a knife through is amazing.

Re: Airport Security

December of 2001, I brought a steak knife with me in the lining of my bag. Got through DCA/Reagan, under hairtrigger heightened alert , but they flagged me on the way back at O'Hare. A surreal experience as I was handed off from one authority to another while talking as fast as I could. I tried to project innoc3ent confidence, but more likely came off as nervous crazy. Oh yeah, there's an FBI file on me.

Dumbest thing ever said to airport security personnel.

Security guy: Why would you have a steak knife tucked into the lining of your bag?

Edgy: I have no idea how that got there. I'm... I'm a vegetarian.

This has long been an informal loosey-goosey life goal of mine.

In summer/fall 2003, I took 1 1/2 flights-- Newark to Burbank, then the first leg of Newark to Atlanta-- with a Swiss Army knife stuck in a zippered pocket near the bottom of my carryon bag (then doubling as my everyday work bag), before I was finally stopped on the way back home to NJ.

Unless things have changed since then, I'm pretty sure that they don't mail these things back to you; they show you whence you can mail them to yourself. (Which is what the Atlantans did to me, before giving me static about the Met hat I was wearing.)

That's what I meant. The lady that handscanned by bag didn't give me any options though. Just basically ran away with the thing. I'd certainly have filled out a form and dropped it in a mail slot. I'm usually good about taking it off places where they scan/pat you going in. But I've brought it into places too. Citi Field and Nassau Coliseum for example. and Sunrise Multiplex.

Sunrise Multiplex was the Wild West back then. If I was a parent, I'd've never let me go there.

On the other hand, I ran into Biz Markee there.

As do I. My kids have permission to interrupt any conversation going on in the house to let me know that Biz is on TV.

Re: Airport Security

He was dressed in a lady's flannel nightgown (XXXL, I imagine) and (maybe) no shoes or socks, and just standing there in the lobby. I'm not sure anybody else (at least at the moment) recognized him. I almost certainly wouldn't have. It was my brother who spotted him.
