Which letter totally psyches you out when you draw it?

V.

Re: Scrabble Poll

V can be a weapon. though. If you play it, your opponent can't hook off it.

If you endcap it, you can lock up the board.

Despite all that V totally sucks. As does C which is worth one fewer point so I'm voting for that.

J flummoxes me. V's do too, but i always feel like i'm missing out on grand opportunities when i draw a J and typically just plop it down in front of an O.

I's and U's - because the Scrabble gods conspire to give me a minimum of 3/4 of them each game.

Re: Scrabble Poll

But only one correct one.

Ls give you shit for points, there's 4 of them, and they don't work with other common letters all that well (T, D, R, N, etc)

Re: Scrabble Poll

Q's are a pain. Yeah, they're ten-pointers, and the new sissified dictionary allows QI, but Q's are still an annoyance. Once you get past QI, QAT, and QANAT, there's not a lot you can do with a Q that doesn't require a U to go with it, and U's are rare.

A Q on the rack is like Ollie in the bullpen. It take up valuable space, and you're probably better off just dropping it while you can. But, because there's so much invested in it (i.e. those ten points) you want to hang on to it with the hope that one day you'll find just the right triple letter score to maximize its value.

And you certainly don't want to just dump it back in the bag because it has all that potential. You know that if you dump it, your opponent will pick it up and maximize its value, and then you'll feel all miserable inside. And because you've only got one opponent, it's not like the Q is going to get picked up by Seattle or some other team that you couldn't give a rip about. No, when you're playing Scrabble, you're the Mets, the other guy is the Yankees, and every play is the Subway Series. So when you dump that Q and your opponent plays it for 50, it's really gonna hurt. So you hang on to that Q and let it fester on your rack. Every. Freaking. Turn.

I hate Q's.

C'mon, KILT, BALD, SNARL, KILN.

U! U is the answer!

And yes, just when I've fobbed off my third U for petit points, I draw the Q.

In combination with Ns, Us do open the door to some funky little bingo possibilities, though.

It's Cs, then Us. (Ns and Ts are just fine for me.)

Re: Scrabble Poll

L is the most commonly doubled consonant in English - or at least according to Jake Gyllenhall's character in 'Zodiac' it is.
So getting more than one isn't all that bad and just one of any 1-point consonant can't kill you too much.

U! U is the answer!

I drew 14 U's in one game. Kept throwing the out and they kept coming back.
And, yeah, as soon as you throw them out the Q pops up to greet you. Then you play or toss the Q and back come the U's
The only thing that keeps them from being as annoying as 'I' is that they're less numerous.

Call Guinness. I have to admire your Jerry-like commitment to your strategy in the face of its continued failure.

I needed to DRINK a Guinness after that one.
Thing is, the past pattern of drawing them shouldn't affect the future chance of drawing more - but it did that day.
I'd have one, make some boring word that couldn't use it, then draw two more. At that point I had no choice but to exchange all three at which point I drew the fourth.
I may have actually used that one on the next turn but was immediately rewarded by re-drawing two of the three I had just dumped ... and then one more on the next turn.
After that it just got worse.

I'm sure that's what Jerry tells himself, but after a while, you'd hope he'd say "Wait a minute, let me re-examine the situation to make sure I'm seeing all the angles."

But in general, I'd agree with you. The only thing is --- as I'm sure you're aware --- the odds do increase somewhat, assuming you're continuing to feed them back into the bag, because as the game progresses, you're drawing from a progresssively smaller bag.

V is def the least favorite consonant.
On the other hand, I can usually play UVEA several times each game.
