A great weekend of Gaelic Footbal in Ireland, after years of County Kerry and Country Tyrone winning this year we are guaranteed a new All -Ireland Champion .

The semi-final pairings are

Dublin V Cork

Down V Kildare

Last weekend saw a thrilling GAA Hurling All Ireland Senior Championship Quarter Final between my own Tipperary and Galway

Tipperary won 3-17 - 3-16

One thing I do love about the sport at home is the amateur ethos and the playing for the county you were born in, it's very tribal.

The English Premier (Soccer) League opens its schedule on August 14.
The EPL is ranked as the best league in Europe based on UEFA coefficients, ahead of Spain and Italy's premier leagues. It has some key U.S. players in it. The team I root for, Tottenham Hotspur, finished 4th last year.
I still can't believe they lost to the Red Bulls on their recent tour here.

On one hand... this sounds ridiculously awesome for potentially dozens of reasons, among them: stupid-awful team uniforms/state mascots; the prospect of making it a team competition of individual/team events (a la "Field Day"/Battle of the Network Stars); being able to end all manner of arguments with family/friends living in other states with, "We kicked your ass in handball, bitch!"

On the other hand... there's an outside chance that this could be the final fuel for the Balkanization of America. Have you seen what people in other regions of the country do to each other's property over, say, SEC football?

Re: General Purpose Sports Thread ...(where we discuss....

I actually dream of doing an All-American baseball tournament with 64 teams representing the 50 US States plus 14 more representing the various territories and protectorates, each of the armed forces, and the combined US Native American tribal lands.

It woudl be an awesome elimination tourney played in three-game series for each roound, and the final would be Puerto Rico against California virtually every time. The teams could outfit themselves with pros, amateurs, college players, and even high school players. They may qualify for a team by virtue of birth, longtime residency, college attendance, or whatnot, but once they declare for a state, they are declared for life. And every now and then, some pitcher from Idaho would have his golden day, pitching against a stacked team from the Sun Belt.

Re: General Purpose Sports Thread ...(where we discuss....

I like it Edgy , it really is great fun. Tipperary is known as a Hurling county , indeed the county is often referred to as the "home of hurling", as such we would have a fierce rivalry with Cork, Limerick ,Galway , Clare and Kilkenny, mostly Cork though. On the big match day heading down to Cork City to play them was always a great day out , crossing the river Lee in a small raft/boat to get to the stadium was all part of the fun.

I have great memories of that, and if you were lucky enough to have your county go to the All-Ireland final then you had a day out in Dublin , if you could secure a ticket, heading up to Dublin was huge.

In Gaelic football some of the great rivalries now have the teams form the North going against the established teams in the South, then you would have not only county against county but also provinces against provinces , the lads form Ulster would be tight with each other and would hate losing to a team from Lenister , great fun.

You'll be surprised the amount of coverage Gaelic Football gets in Melbourne (given their penchant for Aussie Rules down South)-- one of the QFs was shown live (the one which featured an ex-Aussie rules player) and the other was replayed at 10:30pm on the Sunday night on a national network.

Kerry is my team (sorry mate!) -- does Tadhg Kennelly still play for them?

Btw this year was meant to be the return of the International Rules Series but somebody told me it got canned, is that true?

Marshall has not beaten WVU once since they started playing aginst each other in 1911. Last night the Widow of the coach of the ill-fated 1970 deceased Marshall team came to the stadium for the first time since that year.

Marshall is up 21-6 late in the third quarter with the ball on the WVU 8. One off tackle and fumble later WVU commences an eight minute manic comeback to send the game into OT.

WVU kicks a field goal in the first OT. Marshall kicks to match and shank you very much.

It was heartbreaking to watch.

Sydney Roosters@ Gold Coast Titans
3D's Preview
Conflict of interest for me in this one. Roosters are my local team, but I lived on the GC for two years (where I went to law school) and a part-owner of the Titans is a close mate. The Titans have moved this game to Brisbane to play in a bigger stadium (GC is an hour south). The NSW/Queensland rivalry will add extra spice to this one. I actually went to both corresponding fixtures in the regular season, both games were pretty close with away team winning on both occasions. I'm predicting another close one. Roosters are playing the best footy in the playoffs and are more experienced so I think I'll go with them in another close one.

Wests Tigers@St George Illawarra Dragons
3D's Preview
Saints will smash them.

International Rules Football between Ireland and Australia had it's first Test this past Friday night.

Ireland still in with a fighting chance

ireland's Bernard Brogan after scoring a goal during the first Test of the International Rules Series in the Gaelic Grounds ,Limerick

SEÁN MORAN at the Gaelic Grounds

Ireland 40 (1-8-10) Australia 47 (0-14-5): Ireland crashed to a first Test defeat at Limerick’s Gaelic Grounds tonight. In ways the home side was fortunate to be within seven points, having been out-classed for much of the evening but a productive fight back in the last 10 minutes cut 11 points off an 18-point deficit to keep alive some ambitions for next week’s second International Rules Test in Croke Park.

Australia were much superior in creating attacking opportunities and despite the unfamiliarity with the round ball, they showed greater assurance in taking their chances.

Captain Adam Goodes was particularly impressive taking a couple of spectacular catches and kicking four overs for 12 points. Australia led at every break, ending the first quarter 12-9 ahead and going in at half-time 21-16 up.

The traditional moving quarter just after half-time lived up to its name with the visitors doubling their lead to 32-22.

At one stage in the final quarter Ireland trailed 47-29 but a storming goal by Dublin’s Bernard Brogan reduced the deficit by six and, holding their opponents scoreless, Ireland pressed on with Down’s Kevin McKernan adding an over and captain Steven McDonnell and Tommy Walsh adding behinds.

Australia ran the ball with conviction and took a series of attacking marks throughout the match. On a more positive note for the holders, Ireland’s defence put up a fair rearguard action with Dublin goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton doing well to direct operations from the back and farther afield Laois’s Colm Begley showing well.

In front of the 30,117 crowd, Australia had many eye-catching performers. Dane Swan got on a great deal of ball and Todd Banfield, Eddie Betts and especially Leigh Montagna showed penetrating accuracy in their shooting.

Despite the defeat Ireland will the happier of the two sides as they look to overturn a seven point deficit in the second and final Test at Croke Park next Saturday.

It's become pretty standard for athletes of certain religious stripes: you win a great onfield victory in this country, you very publicly give thanks and praise to God.

So something like this, then, after Steve Johnson's drop of a game-winning overtime TD in Sunday's Bills-Steelers game... can be weirdly refreshing.

Sensational effort -- one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. In baseball terms, it would be like Australia overcoming a 10-run deficit to defeat the US.

Hope Ireland can make it out of that group -- probably need to beat both the West Indies and the Netherlands, which on yesterday's performance, is definitely achievable.

I don't really get this comment but I just watched that whole piece and it seemed pretty on the level to me.

Armstrong has always been full of shit IMO and an asshole on top of it (deny, savage the accusers, act as though you're above it, exploit cancer victims as a means of facilitating anything). I hope he gets rung up on this.

Hamilton interview is online now, really something to see. Obvious that it kills him to have to out Armstrong, and that doping always has been the way its done in cycling.

NFL doping ought to be next, and easiest to expose it would seem.

Hamilton has as much credibility as Floyd Landis. My point was: it brought absolutely nothing new to the debate. The only thing remotely interesting was the statements Curious George allegedly gave to the FDA. But if you thought the Bonds indictment was a waste of everybody's time and money.....

Any rational human being with half a brain cell who's followed cycling for the last 10 years can tell you that Armstrong wasn't clean (see list below) but there probably hasn't been a "clean" winner of the Tour de France in the last 50 years.

If the lynch-mob wants to hang Lance, more power to them, but they should have the decency to extend their services to others, like for starters, Lemond and his miraculous "iron" shots.

And the list is incomplete:
Escertin was one of Dr Ferrari's patients and returned a 50+ hct level when he was tested in 1998.

I know nothing about LeMond and his iron shots, my issue is more with the arrogance with which Armstrong denies and points fingers, and how cowardly he is to hide his cheating behind kids with cancer.

I wasn't aware of this, but some journo described Armstrong as the "cancer of cycling" --- see #2 on the video below -- that's one of the most disgusting things I've ever come across.

I hold no objection to Armstrong being exposed, but doping has been going on for so long and is so widespread that in my view, it won't change his legacy as the greatest of all-time.

Incidentally, #5 on that list is Bonilla v The Klap. Does anybody know what cap BB is wearing in the first shot?

I love him.

Re: General Purpose Sports Thread ...(where we discuss....

I totally disagree. Armstrong is using cancer -- other people's cancer -- to shield him from suspicion of his own cheating. Sure that may have been an obnoxious way to put it but the whole "how-dare-you-pick-on-us-cancer-patients" act of his is the worst.

And I understand that doping is how the game is played. Then say so, don't pretend you're the only one above it when there are witnesses to your own drug use and paying off officials to have looked the other way. FU Armstrong!!!

I like the last one. Who was that coach in the orange golf shirt?

If I was an athlete, every interview I gave would end in "...makes me wanna puke."

After I retired, there would people throwing money at me, pitching book deals and reality progams titled "...makes me wanna puke."

After a season full of my twitter timeline being full of jealousy at the Heat being masked as hatred of them, most of that's been washed away or at least muted and everyone's back to just complaining about the competitive balance of it all that allowed Miami to basically win the championship year after year. (despite, of course, that they haven't even won it yet this year)

I can't wait for basketball to end. I don't care what Scottie Pippin says about Lebron (and I enjoyed watching the Bulls in the 90s when I was growing up). I know I'm just setting myself up for more brilliant NFL labor talk, but whatever.

How can anyone not like Dirk?

He's European, he wears 41 and he's clutch.

(Also helps that I can't stand the Heat)

Sidenote - watching live basketball in 3D is a pretty freaking amazing experience.

I'm all in with Team Cuban here, so don't get me wrong.

The Heat have been DAMN impressive during these playoffs, and not in the All-Star Team Playing Soft way. They've played suffocating, hardworking defense-- Wade and LeBron chief among them-- and smart, ferocious offense. Leave aside the Hollywood Mercenaries kinda feel and the stupid "Heatles" shit, and they're a cunning, deadly basketball team. If the Mavs push them to 7, then Dirk, et. al. should be proud.

The difference between MJ and James LeBron

"If MJ was playing on this Heat team, the series would already be over".

Heat down by 9 at 3/4 time.

Btw, the Dwayne Wade SportCenter ad....."When is ready!"

Oh, come on. LeBron James is a very, very good basketball player who, as a dumbass 25-year-old listening to other dumbass 25-year-olds, made a horrible, horrible PR decision less than a year ago. He's never been arrested, or caught with a dead Jennifer Levin, or done anything explicitly "immoral." Don't you think it says something more about you, that you're so gleeful that--

"All the people that was rooting on me to fail, at the end of the day they have to wake up tomorrow and have the same life that they had before they woke up today," James said. "They have the same personal problems they had today."

Well, okay, that's a little, say, undignified for a supposed great player and good guy to say, especially when you consider that it was his first postgame comment-- nothing about "coming back strong," or "congratulations," or "we screwed up; this can't happen again." But come on, he's got a point. And it's not like the guy is completely out of persp--

@Holdenradio
HoldenKushner

Dr Jack [Ramsay] tells us LeBron didn't talk to ABC & ESPN b/c James felt the network didn't report "The Decision" accurately.

Didn't watch more than five minutes of the Finals but the hate for James is something else, fucks sake , I did in fact watch the post-game on espn with Magic , Jon Barry? and Mike Wilbon, they showed some stats that were telling for James, biggest drop off in PPG in Finals history....IIRC down from 26 PPG to 17, his fourth quarters , Magic is a nice guy but he put it up to James to get thicker skin.

Re: General Purpose Sports Thread ...(where we discuss....

Seems to me that it was not only how well he played (or didn't) but also the way he played.
Look, I'm going on very little actual viewing and barely more basketball knowledge than that, but even I could see him just standing around at the perimeter during crunch time not even trying to force his way into the action. Adding that to the just plain quitting he did at one point during last year's semi's vs Boston and he's quickly gaining the reputation of someone who, while immensely talented, is at the moment a great front-runner but far short of the Mt. Rushmore of hoops greats despite the fact that some had already had started to do the face-chiseling.

I certainly never held it against him for leaving Cleveland even though the way he went about that caused much of the reputation problem. Thing is that the NBA is the "one-name" league, a place that revolves around stars to the point where they're all known by a single moniker: LeBron & Kobe & Shaq & Larry & Magic & Michael & Charles ...., and if you're going to take advantage of the enormous benefits that set-up brings he is going to have to grow thicker skin and take the downside that comes with that as well.

All that being said, I have no intention of listening to the national media psycho-analyze King James non-stop for the next week or so. With nothing else to talk about except NFL lockout news, OchoCinco tweets, and (God forbid) Baseball?! I figure they're going to stretch this topic out until at least August when either the NFL labor will be solved or they can go back to pretending that college football is a pure sport for clean-cut youths and not a rigged scandal-in-waiting filled with active and/or future felons.
