Tiger in the tank

Tiger Woods - playing a course that he's played 11 times, won 7 of them, and was in the top 6 every other time - totally falls apart and comes in 78th in a field of 79 (two golfers withdrew). That this tourney was an invitational and not an open means that there was no weekend cut-off otherwise he wouldn't have even lasted until Sunday.
Following the prvious year's knee surgery and the additional lay-off due to his ... well, laying on, I expected a somewhat less-dominant Tiger this season but the spiral that started last Thanksgiving is now rapidly sucking him down to depths we've never seen from him and he looked totally lost out on the course today in the brief spots I saw. Not many crash-and-burns have been this dramatic.

Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson had a chance to jump on Tiger's troubles and gain the #1 world ranking for the first time in his career.
Needing to finish in the top 4 after starting Sunday in 10th place ... he shoots a 7-over 77 and limps home in 46th place.

Worst 72-hole finish ever. Not merely since achieving number one, or turning pro. Ever.

I think Tiger should join the cast of Celebrity Rehab, never know who he'd meet there.

The needed four of five Major titles to pass Jack aren't looking as sure a thing as they did a few years ago, in the grand scheme of things it doesn't sound like a lot when you have won 14/15 but most players are doing great to win 1, 2 or 3.

Considering that his old mistress was recently confirmed as one of the participants in the next season, I think that's probably a bad idea. VH1 would probably love it, though.

Well, there was time when he cut out of kindergarten and shot a 92 from the men's tees during a howling wind ... but, yeah, other than that.

Final major (PGA) coming up this week and then selections for September's Ryder Cup.
Between last year's inactivity due to injury and this year's suckitude he hasn't earned an automatic choice (8 of the 12 slots on each side are based on 'points' earned over the last two seasons) and U.S. captain Corey Pavin might come to the conclusion that the American side will actually be a better team without Tiger as one of his add-on choices. Plus I bet he doesn't want to go but at the same time doesn't want to publicly admit that he doesn't want to go.
I feel a sore knee coming on.
