Just what the ailing Met offense needs: Ubaldo Jimenez!

The Rocky road back to relevancy begins tonight!

Let's see how the lineup shakes out.

Will Castillo get the start, particularly against a tough pitcher? It's a righty, does that mean Fernando instead of Frenchy? Will Beltran talk his way into the lineup?

The Mets have no chance. Just like they had no chance against Wainwright after that horrible road trip.

Yeah, this is the kind of game where they surprise us and win 8-1. We briefly get our hopes up, and they then lose the next seven in a row.

Martinez batting 2nd? Really?

What, is it the consistent contact he makes or the blazing speed, or the lack of power (so bunting isn't as big a deal)? Or the fact that none of that describes him?

It's amazing how much more people jump on football players in salary disputes, because of the rah-rah team crap.

Meanwhile, the moment they're injured and the non-guaranteed money disappears, the transaction gets a buried graf deep in the sports section, and that's that.

Pay Revis his money, and get off my Mets game, sir.

I was reading blogs some time back to see who to invite to the Pool, and came to subscribe to this Mets blog by this young lady who is as cute as a bug. The amazing thing is that she has this great jones for Jeff Francoeur is consumed to the notion that Manuel is unjustly depriving Jeff of PT.

I know these are emotional issues with the young, and I'm trying to gently explain to the lady that she is gripped by a madness --- an insidious case for French Dengue not unlike the dosage several of Higgins' lads were strincken with in Equatoral Guinea in '56. Or was it '57?

Well, our last two wins coming 1-0, I think it's clear what the defense and ptiching need to do, and that's be perfect.

It would also help if the pitchers could hit for a little more power. No pressure.

For a guy who supposedly throws 90+ off the mound with that left arm, Ike makes some of the wimpiest looking throws over to 1st when the pitcher is covering. He looks like he's making fade-away jump shots, shot-puts, Easter-egg tosses, etc.
His throws to 2nd are OK when he's trying to go 3-6-3 so it's obvious he CAN still throw. He's just one of those guys who doesn't look like he knows how to throw soft when necessary. He's like one of those pitchers who suddenly look like a spaz when he gets a come-backer and just has to lob it over to 1st.

I've noticed that..but I've always noticed it's always a perfect throw right to where the pitcher will be. a soft lob is actually probably easier for a pitcher running and covering to grab.

I didn't see tonight's throw, but I'd generally agree with Ceetar. Ike looks like he's got a nice soft touch on tosses to the pitcher covering first.

Hate all you want. The real story here is Molly Fletcher and her bizarre performance of speaking in the first person plural on behalf of her client.

“We want to play every day,” Francoeur’s agent Molly Fletcher said yesterday. “We prefer to play in New York. But if we’re not going to play every day in New York, we absolutely welcome the opportunity to play every day somewhere else.”

Wait, are you referring to Frenchy or Molly?

Dig the 1-0 game. Not much to complain about. Yeah, we didn't hit much but that Ubaldo guy is pretty good. Disappointed with Tejada failing to cover the bag quickly enough when Thole had the runner thrown out at second. Very pleased with Pelfrey's performance.

Carter should be giving Davis a day off; looked like he needs it, perhaps even more than Beltran did.

If Pelf's slump was entirely attributable to pitch-tipping, it's a shame that no one picked up on that earlier. (No one on the Mets, that is --- the opposition was onto it.) Because if the 1st half Pelf was the real deal, the Mets would be in the thick of it if not for Pelf's streak of ugly starts.

I'll give Jerry kudos for learning from a mistake... last night, he pinch ran Francoeur for Carter in the 8th. He could have used Castillo, arguably faster than Francoeur, but that would have left him without the option to PH for Tejada if he wanted to. On Sunday, he PH Castillo in the 5th which left him without a backup middle IF so he felt that he had to let Tejada bat in the 9th (when he could have PH Hessman). This is obvious stuff but Jerry didn't get it on Sunday and he got it last night so good for him.

(I added "middle" before IF. Hessman's an IF but plays 1B/3B. The point is the same.)

I think Frenchy may have even scored on the double. But if it was Castillo it'd be a more sure thing. I think they held him at third because there were no outs.

There was no chance of Francouer scoring. A runner would have scored only if they were running on the pitch.

I agree. It was a liner that came off the wall and straight back to the strong-armed Hawpe.
Thole wound up only barely getting to 2nd and I don't think Reyes/Pagan score on that one unless they were off on the pitch.

The best thing about that switch was that it got Carter off the field (that, rather than speed, was its main purpose anyway) because an inning later Martinez - moved over to LF to make room for Francoeur - makes that diving catch coming in that Carter almost certainly doesn't.

Edgy DC
Aug 11 2010 08:04 AM
Re: Change Your Fundies: Rockies/Mets iGT 8/10/10

Yes, I'm certain that switch was about defense. I was just asking if there was a somewhat better baserunner in the meantime.

At any rate, making a switch for defense before the team has achieved a lead (or indeed come any closer than getting a runner or first with no out) is dangerous business. Classick Jerry playing for the tie there. He certainly could have made the swap after achieving the lead.

The difference in footspeed though is near negligible, isn't it? I'd put Carter at below average and Francouer as a little bit less below average.

Frayed Knot
Aug 11 2010 08:13 AM
Re: Change Your Fundies: Rockies/Mets iGT 8/10/10

Eh, I don't think that's such a conservative move.
It's already bottom 7 and that spot in the lineup isn't even a sure bet to come around again (it didn't as things turned out) and scoring there makes it even less likely. Besides, it's not like Carter is some great established hitter that's being yanked here -- unlike, say, Girardi pulling ARod for a pr the other day and having to hit backup IF Ramiro Pena in his spot in the 9th inning of a tight game later on.

So speed was upgraded somewhat; defense upgraded significantly; and I think we'll survive without a (possible) Chris Carter AB in the late inning for a guy who - flaws and all - has most of our GW-RBIs over the last two weeks.
