May Friday the 13th bring them good luck as they go for the rarity of two in a row.

Reyes SS
Pagan LF
Wright 3B
Beltran CF
Hessman 1B
Francouer RF
Blanco C
Tejada 2B
Dickey P

Retarded. Show me the plan Jerry, because it seems like you are back-handedly trying to lose.

Hamels can be pretty rough on the lefties, and it's not like Davis hasn't been a cluprit in the disappearance of the offense. Plus, I'm guaranteeing at least one Hessman HR tonight.

Re: IGT--Phillies @ Mets, 08/13/10

Yes on the L/L thing, but at some point, if Davis is going to be a major league hitter, he needs to face lefties and get hits. You can't hide him forever.

Let him go out there and strike out four times; maybe he learns something for the next time he faces Hamels. The rest of the lineup isn't surprising, though.

Howie confessed he doesn't know from all the different food stands at Citi Field and then noted he just saw two of the biggest ribs he's ever seen in his life. Somebody should take Howie to Blue Smoke, if just so he knows his surroundings.

He also, the other day, complimented Joe Posnanski's article on Stan Musial in Sports Illustrated but had trouble spitting out the name Joe Posnanski as if it was the first time he'd heard of him. JP not the most famous of scribes, perhaps, but well known to those who read about baseball online.

Howie Rose: a great Met voice but perhaps a little set in his ways.

Re: IGT--Phillies @ Mets, 08/13/10

I thought that the replay was inconclusive, and based on the SNY feed, I have no idea whether that should've been a homer. Gary Cohen believes that Hessman's shot had to have been a homer because the fan's arms aren't long enough to reach below the orange line that demarcates a HR. I disagree with Gary's analysis. The issue is whether the ball would've landed above the orange line had it not been deflected by the fan. It's theoretically possible to interfere with the flight of the ball while the ball is above the HR line. I couldn't tell whether or not the fan touched the ball and couldn't judge the trajectory of the batted ball either. So I don't know.

Just because he's suspended from playing doesn't man his core competencies can't be put to good use. Give him his salary for a good cause. And let Ollie hold down that fan while K-Rod mans up.

The angle I saw from the Phils feed pretty much had it on a trajectory to either hit the orange line, or right above it.
Not below, I don't think, but of course I'm looking at this thru blue and orange tinted glasses.

If pressed to testify I'd have to say it would have hit the line.

Shouldas:

- Hessman shoulda had a HR
- Somebody shoulda beaten that fan to a bloody pulp
- Pagan shoulda gone on contact on Wright's bouncer in the first inning
- Beltran shoulda been had a triple on his double. I think both he and Wright thought he had a HR
- Davis shoulda been at 1B for defense in the last inning
- and SOMEBODY shoulda gotten Hessman in from 3B

Other than that it was a great game.

Thats classic.

I'm watching ESPN and they keep showing these same views of the "homer".
Maybe these were from SNY. They have not shown the best view available.

The Phil pheed view I saw earlier tonight during the game was from off to the right at an angle to and facing the wall,
and CLEARLY showed that the fan touched the ball.
I'd like to know if the umps saw this view.
They certainly should have.

ESPN seems to think the issue was if the fan touched it or not.
I didn't think that was the issue.
I thought it was where would the ball have landed if it was not deflected by the bonehead.

It is what would have happened had the dope not touched it -- and unless that ball is somehow coming straight down I can't see how it lands below the top of the marked fence if untouched.

Just another example, btw, of how replay rules work much better in theory than they do in practice, especially when the rule is installed in-season with no consideration given to whether or not camera angles are even going to be definitive for what they're supposed to be watching. Maybe, just maybe, a good idea would have been to install cameras which shoot along the fence line before you decide to use them to determine what went on along that line.

Ump quotes:

“The feeds that we had from the replay, the fan reaches over the fence, hits his hand and knocks the ball down,” [crew chief Tom] Hallion said. “And in our judgment, would not have gotten out of the ballpark.”
[Hallion insisted that] “it’s so hard because the angle is looking from home plate out.” ... “We did our best,” ... “Of course an umpire wants to get a call right.”
Asked why Hessman was awarded third — instead of the more conventional decision to give him a double — Hallion said, “There was fan interference. It’s our judgment of where he would have been if there was no fan interference.”

Re: IGT--Phillies @ Mets, 08/13/10

I have to say last night was one of the best game experiences I've ever had. The weather was perfect, we had great seats, and the kids were really excited and happy.

Couple of cool things:

*When Hamels got the hit, I had a good feeling RA was going to throw a one-hitter with that being the only hit. The crowd showered him with love after the game. I can't imagine how cool it must have been for him. You really have to feel good for a guy like that.

*Because we listen to games in the car, Ryan thinks the chant goes "Let's Go Mets! F-A-N!"

*Stella gets all excited when the crowd cheers. Her eyes get big, she claps, and looks genuinely shocked that when the Mets score a run. She also likes french fries from Nathan's.

*The kids love the black. Given license to pick out anything in the store my nephew chose the black alternate jersey and the black hat.

*Ryan, given similar license, picked out the giant foam finger. Given the way the season has gone, I was half expecting to see these utilizing a different digit...

*Ryan rounded up a posse of fellow dabidrye fans to go after the asshole who fucked up Hessman's HR. Security won't talk about it because this crew roughed him up something fierce

*The boys got a turn at the Whiffle ball field

*And the batting cage

*Earlier this year, Edgy predicted that the Mets were going to do something special to win over my nephew's fanhood. Last night was it. He says Dickey is his favorite pitcher not named Santana.

Firstly:
The fan was a bonehead, no doubt. But unless they put up an 8 foot railing there above the left field wall, or a moat (the Phils have a lil flower moat) that fans cannot reach over, he did nothing that deserved official punishment. Interference, sure, he happened to be sitting in a spot where he could get a hand on a fair ball.
And half the time, a person that can, will.
I know the rule about a ball in play, but still.
Then again, I even have an issue with fans being ejected for touching balls down the lines. I think that the ruling that the ump can use his discretion as to awarding the batter a base is a good logical thing. That the fan should be punished for, in the heat of the moment, doing what to him comes naturally,....well, I've always had a problem with this rule. If its going to be that way, make it so it's not something that can occur so easily.

Fans, like managers, players, and umps, can make mistakes. If you allow them to be so close (which I prefer) that they can become part of a play, then, that's the way it goes.

Secondly:
I wish I had a screen shot of the side view that was shown on Comcast Sports Net. I would love to post it.
You could easily just draw a line from the original trajectory (before the fan deflected its path) of the baseball to see where it would have hit the wall.
That the umps did not have this view available just bayboggles my mind.
This is MLB.
If they are going to do this home run review thing, they have to have EVERY POSSIBLE VIEW available for review.
I don't care if they come from different sources.
Or they should have cameras installed in strategic spots for just such reviews (as suggested here).
This is MLB, come on already.

Re: IGT--Phillies @ Mets, 08/13/10

What the umps see when they go to the 'replay room' comes from MLB headquarters in NYC and they DO have access to all available angles whether from home or road team feeds.

As far as what happens when a fan interferes with the ball:

- the part about umpire's discretion as to where to place the batter comes from the idea that the interference can come at various points in the play and therefore they use their judgement as to what would have happened had it not occurred. It's different from a 'ground rule' where a batted or thrown ball goes directly out of play and the remedy is automatic.

- ejecting the fan is an individual stadium decision and not a rule from baseball as a whole. The problem with NOT punishing it is that it would lead to even more occurrences than what you have now. If the ball's in play then leave it alone!!

I agree. I personally would leave it alone. Everyone should.
There are boneheads who don't.
I really don't think not punishing would lead to more occurrences.
I believe its all on the individual who is given the opportunity to interfere and what he/she does with it.
Boneheads will interfere every time, lol.

Another question that occurs to me is: when they do interfere in a situation where they end up in possession if the baseball do they get to keep it?
Even I would consider being tossed from the park for the rest of the game for a game used ball.
I still think if I was certain that the ball was in play, personally, I'd refrain.

Re: The umps:
If the umps had access to all the footage of the Hessman drive, why, everywhere I read, do they say it was a hard call to make because ALL the views they saw were from an angle from home plate looking straight at the wall?

The umps have possibly eluded to seeing other footage of the play after the game, but still nothing to indicate they saw the play from a different, more revealing, angle.
