Dickey Day is really the only Met day I look forward to anymore. Which is kind of depressing.

But, hey-- DICKEY DAY!

After hearing his post game interview last week, I now think R A stands for Really Articulate.
There were few, if any, hesitations (um, er) or "you know"s.
He actually used some words and sentence structure and sense of humor I hadn't heard from an athlete in a long time, and used them properly.
When his Mets playing career is over (hopefully not for at least 5 more years), he would be a welcome addition to the broadcasting crew.

Our Dickey's not just a reader, but a literary-minded man in full.

"We discuss what we've read so. There's no testing, but I do want to know about their comprehension and what they retain ... want them to see beneath the surface, to understand the human condition and actions that happen ... the thing I hope for them is that they have depth, that they relate well to all walks of life, all social classes and ethnic backgrounds. I want them to assimilate and empathize, [do] more than just tolerate."

I don't want to get the facts wrong on that so I'll look for an article that would be more factual than my explanation.

But in a nutshell Fig was suffering from migraine-like symptoms and it is possible that he has (i think they said) a sheared nerve in his head.
He needed two injections in his neck before the game yesterday to block the nerve.

That's some serious stuff.

Re: Knuck You, Astros! Mets @ Hous 8/18/10 IGT

I'm curious about Tak.
I remember, almost every time he took the mound, in any role, how he would be very successful the first time through the lineup.

My question would be, in all of his appearances, starting, relieving, whatever, how did he do in the first inning he pitched.
How did he do against those first 3 batters.

If someone comes up with this stat I'll do a backflip in my chair ;)
I mean for real mags

Re: Knuck You, Astros! Mets @ Hous 8/18/10 IGT

From another thread.

[quote="batmagadanleadoff"]Takahashi to be Mets' closer of choice

HOUSTON -- Manager Jerry Manuel said Hisanori Takahashi would likely remain the team's closer as long as he continues to succeed in the position. Takahashi worked a perfect ninth for his first save Monday.

"For the most part he'll be the guy if he's fresh and the matchups look favorable for him," Manuel said. "He'll be the guy that we'll close the games with."

I don't think that was one of batmag's punk quotes.

The bases-loaded stats for the Mets are just stunningly bad, and the fact that it's both a team-wide and season-long outage is even worse.
Of all the situational stats - most of which are vastly over-blown and over-quoted by mediots and others - the bags-loaded one probably means more than any of them because it represents a HUGE advantage for the batter knowing that the pitcher can't walk you and so really should give a cause-and-effect "clutchness" boost.

Except for us it's an anti-clutch thing.

And what does this indicate? poor preparation for "approach at the plate" in different situations? (Like how the Mets were/are bad at getting the run in from third with less than 2 outs?) Unprepared in general? just pressing to much?

If anyone knew it would be easy to fix.
Usually you could write these things off as just a quirk but the size of the sample starts to argues against that.

Well....
I'm Mr. Positive, but we already got our two runs.
Sad to say but if we outlast them and win, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

And I do think being unprepared for certain situations at the plate HAS to be hung on the hitting coach.
If they are there to do anything, its to remind players of the obvious.

Just peaked in on an Astros board and folks there are gaping over the 101s and 102s from Parnell, saying they haven't seen readings like that since the days when Wagner was young.
So if that IS a fast gun it's apparently not one that's always fast.

Kevin Burkhardt confirmed with a couple of scouts in the stands that Parnell hit 101 7times or something in the first inning. I mistrust most gun readings too, but at least there were multiple sources. I'm not sure the difference between 101 and 99 is that huge a deal.

I know gameday was thinking his 91mph changeup(or slider?) was a fastball.

Re: Knuck You, Astros! Mets @ Hous 8/18/10 IGT

I was confident, also. The fact that Dickey pitched into the ninth meant the Mets got into the opposition bullpen earlier than the Astros did, and so the 'Stros were digging deeper and deeper sooner than the Mets.

It also meant the world to me that Jerry used his "closer" first, and so our pitchers would be used more or less in the order of their expected effectiveness.

This nearly proves, sadly, that keeping a closer in the pen in extra-innings on the road isn't a strategy that's about winning games for Jerry, but about pumping stats up for the overindulged big name. Takahashi may be the nominal closer, but he doesn't have the juice for that sort of treatment.

I also liked the Mets working some walks for once, though Ike swinging 2-0 and poppping up was real annoying.

Parnell hit 101 on 7/21 against the Diamondbacks: the last pitch he threw in that game. I'll find a 102er eventually ...[/quote:2sjbpt3r]

Yeah, but it sounds like you've established that he hasn't been "hitting 101 and 102 all season long, home and road."[/quote:2sjbpt3r]

Correct. But I definitely remember the 102 that Parnell threw prior to last night's game. I specifically remember it because the announcers didn't note it ... which led me to wonder why not?

Kevin Burkhardt confirmed with a couple of scouts in the stands that Parnell hit 101 7times or something in the first inning. [/quote:1i66s2ni]

Yeah. I found some other 101 mph Parnell pitches, but didn't bother to note the time/date etc. because I was looking for the 102's.

That Burkhardt thing is cool, because that kind of implies that there was a consensus on multiple guns.

In High Heat, Tim Wendell writes about how scout's guns disagree all the time and they still use a lot of eyeball judgment to evaluate a guys heat.

I wonder whether the closed roof factors in at all. The outfielders really seem to be misreading the ball a lot this series.
