Re: If Misches were wishes ... NYM@HOU IGT 8/19/10

The Mets have the easiest remaining schedule in all of baseball, according to this:

Remaining schedule (today through season's end)

Best schedule: New York Mets. Sure, they're only 11-19 since the All-Star break. Sure, they're now 8½ games out of a playoff spot (the wild card), putting their chances of a postseason appearance at slim to none. And sure, they just lost Francisco Rodriguez for the season, meaning there's a patchwork bullpen back there desperately trying, often failing, to preserve leads. But that doesn't mean owners of Mets starters should be leaping off ledges, especially not with the knowledge that their remaining schedule is strong. The Mets play more home (23) than road (20) games the rest of the way, and face teams that rank in the bottom half of the National League in runs 26 times in 43 contests (or more than 60 percent of the time). Heck, the toughest matchups they have remaining are six against the rival Philadelphia Phillies, a team that has a .657 OPS against the Mets this year, and four against the Milwaukee Brewers, all of them at Citi Field. Johan Santana, R.A. Dickey and Jonathon Niese might yet stave off disaster.

Stfu, espn. We're playing .600 without that jerkoff, both losses were the starters', and the Rodriguezless bullpen has thrown 11 1/3 scoreless innings.

That's just so lazy by espn or the writer, whatever, it would take less than one minute to check the numbers that bucket gave us.

So yeah, STFU espn.

Re: If Misches were wishes ... NYM@HOU IGT 8/19/10

I'd forgotten Misch was on the team.

Expect a Oliver Perez sighting this weekend, if not today. All signs are leaning towards it.

1. He hasn't pitched in ages.
2. reports that he's "looking better" (I don't know how this can be when he hasn't actually faced batters)
3. The Mets have already not lost this series, and 2 road wins a trip is normal. Could be thinking it's house money at this point?
4. Bullpen tired from yesterday.
5. B.S. about missing-Frankie need to get more value from everyone else.

I love knishes, because they're delicious.

PREDICTION: Ollie pitches today, and hits 103km/h... at least.

Didn't we once have a poll about whether we preferred the round knishes or the square ones?
If not, we should have.
But, I'd prefer that Misch pitches a great game today.
The thought of seeing Ollie killed my appetite for either kind of knish.

I'm dumping the one game at a time approach, sorry Greg, but 28-12 from here on might get the Mets in the postseason.

So most nights, the Mets bench is 2 catchers, and only Thole can play another position (1B); Hessman, a slow power hitter who plays 1B and 3B; Carter, a slow power hitter (hopefully) who plays 1B, LF, RF (and none of them well); and Castillo, a 2B only. No back-up SS, no one with speed to pinch-run, and no back-up CF.

Re: If Misches were wishes ... NYM@HOU IGT 8/19/10

while i don't agree with the 3 catchers I agree with every other bench spot.
We've got 2 guys playing regularly in the OF who play CF and two guys playing regularly in the IF who play SS. We don't need a back up at either - the backup is on the field.

Pinch Running ? It ain't worth carrying Feliciano/Martinez to Pinch Run it's not like they're Dave Roberts.

Well, the backup SS is playing 2B (or not depending on the night) and the backup CF is playing one of the corners - so we're not really short in either spot.
Besides, any shortfalls that do exist get "solved" in two weeks when rosters expand.

Re: If Misches were wishes ... NYM@HOU IGT 8/19/10

I'm happy that Hessman is still around but they could use a guy who can lead off the bottom of the 9th, down 1 (like that ever happens), and someone that can PR for Hessman, Carter, or one of the catchers. They also could use a backup MI rather than a guy that can barely play 2d--in other words, I'd rather see Turner up than Castillo... but you're right, as soon as Buffalo (red hot at the moment) is done, this issue is solved (I'm guessing that for position players, Turner, Evans, J. Feliciano, F. Martinez and maybe Santos--on the DL now--get called up).

They'll be hitting well next week, it's true. Too late to join a race, more than likely, but they will be.

They'll probably even be hitting if Jerry continues to start a bunch of lost causes. And we'll be saying, "Where was this when we needed it?"

But the Jerry Watch is the real drama in the season for me right now. I don't know why as absolutely nothing seems to be bubbling up on that front.

I kind of want David Wright to walk into one of the post game conferences, shove Jerry out of the way, and declare himself Player-Manager for the rest of the season.

Re: If Misches were wishes ... NYM@HOU IGT 8/19/10

Jerry was pretty rough in his postgame comments, according to my Snooze recap. He called it "pathetic," and came off as frustrated with the team dynamic. He along with unnamed "veterans" on the team (although you can guess) didn't take to the whole "youth movement" thing very well (losing Cora, getting Tejada and Martinez, etc etc) according to Martino's recap.

Howard Johnson in a Modern Classic of faint praise assessed Fartinez thusly: "I see him as a guy who is going to hit 15 home runs."

In a season or a career, Howard? He didn't say.

Meantime I'm dumbstruck at how everyone is walking around with the idea that offensive struggles are some kind of gigantic mystery.

I thought Hojo was a bit pathetic in his comments , sounded like Fran Healy.

"The big thing is trying to get him to get a feel for when the pitchers change looks on him. Being able to make the adjustment to when they take speed off pitches in the strike zone," Johnson said. "That takes time."

The biggest thing he has going for him is a really quick bat," he said. "He's got quick hands, and it's one of those things where he's just got to learn major league pitching. They're kind of playing around on him. He's just got to get the feel of guys changing speeds in the strike zone. I see him as a guy who is going to hit 15 home runs."

Especially with the setbacks to Bay, I think he needs to be here for evaluation purposes. The Mets outfield is pretty much set for next year, and this is the only real chance (hopefully, injuries, etc) to evaluate him at the major league level. only a couple weeks left of Buffalo season anyway, and he'd definitely be an interesting piece to trade if he could hit over .300 and hit some home runs in September.

Re: If Misches were wishes ... NYM@HOU IGT 8/19/10

I concur with Ceetar. I don't think much of F. Martinez, and I've gotten into it with some of you about that, but... at this point in the season, he should be playing everyday for the Mets so they can see if he's any good in the major leagues. We won't know that while he's in Buffalo because, try and follow this Jeff W. and Omar, that's not the major leagues. Francoeur won't be on the 2011 Mets so there is no point in playing him any longer. Same with Castillo and Barajas/Blanco, too.

Right now, the '11 Mets OF will be Bay/Beltran/Pagan. But what if the next GM (he said hopefully) is offered something good for Beltran or Pagan. Can F. Martinez be an everyday player on the major league level? I haven't seen anything to tell me that the answer is "yes" but we won't learn anything about him while he's in the minors.

That's a good point about Carter. I didn't realize that he's out of options. Given that the Mets traded Wagner for him and another guy, and also saved a few million, instead of keeping Wagner and then taking the draft picks as compensation, they should see what he's got, too.

Well, if one was sure and certain either way it wouldn't matter what kind of playing time he got. It's that uncertainty that would seemingly demand more PT for him.
