You mean that a team that is losing a lot of games can fire their manager? Come on! Next you'll tell me that they can get rid of their GM, too! And "eat" the salary of an under performing player that is taking up a roster spot. That's crazy talk!

Yeah, this is really cutting into my fantasy. Bigger than his legacy as a player is his legacy as a Japanese-American bridge figure.

If the Mets felt any sense of urgency about this, they'd act NOW! But I doubt that Bobby's the guy they want, so they'll probably sit idly by while he goes elsewhere. Worst possible scenario: Girardi to Cubs, Valentine to the Bronx.

I think they want him, but I think they fear him becoming a 900-pound gorilla. Both times he got fired in Japan, he had gotten bigger than the team. In many ways, when he left the Mets, he had a higher profile than the organization. I think they'd rather have the next Bobby Valentine. The good news and the bad news these days is that the Mets seem to proceed with caution.

If all the talk/lack thereof is to be believed, of all the people/entities in the Mets' ambit, the ones who are least excited about the prospect of Bobby Valentine as manager seem to be the ones in a position to hire a manager.

If he's not coming here, I wouldn't mind seeing him in Seattle. They are a team that I don't mind rooting for as they've provided me with one of my favorite baseball memories. (...Edgar Martinez with a double ripped down the left field line, and they are going crazy at the Kingdome!!)

The the coming years, an MFY manager is going to have to figure out if ARod or Jeter is going to become a full-time DH, and deal with the other one's increasingly bad fielding.

Is Girardi leaving the MFYs a possibility? Girardi is both from and went to school in (Northwestern) the Chicago area and is also a former Cub. That, along with Piniella's impending retirement and the fact that Girardi is signed only through this season, has sent media types speculating about the idea of him 'going home' to Chicago's north side although there's nothing beyond that sort of speculation at this point. If nothing else, just the thought that that job is potentially out there is enough to keep Yanx mgmt from taking the stand during negotiations this winter that there's no other job that could possibly compare to the one in the Bronx.

As far as the Bobby situation goes -- between the Cubs, Mariners, possibly Dodgers, and who knows what other jobs being available this winter, I'm reasonably sure that Bobby V will be employed as a manager in the U.S. of A. by next opening day for the first time in nearly a decade. And I'm nearly as sure that it won't be in Queens.

I'd say the chances of Joe going to Chicago are pretty good when (OK, if) the MFYs don't win the WS and get better when (if) they're knocked off by Texas or Minnesota in the first round. Heh heh.
