Over the Line?

MLB is pushing a synergistic marketing campaign where "Captain Morgan" will throwing out the first pitch at a game in each ballpark?
|
themetfairy Aug 20 2010 02:01 PM Re: Over the Line |
Shouldn't that take place on September 19th?

Got a little Captain in him?

arrr (or only in Pittsburgh?) it's been going on all season. I don't think it's over the line. At least, no more than any of the other billion things mlb does these days in regards to advertising. I think the Yankees teeter and cross that line most days, but I may be biased.

Got a little bigger Captain in him?

Just cause MLB does it does not mean its the proper thing to do. For the right amount of $$ MLB will do anything, it seems. This is one of the things that's wrong with the game today, IMO. No, that boozeclown should not be throwing out first pitches. I'll proudly smell like an old fart right along with you Edgy. (for the most part I enjoy the commercials and the liquor)

Looks like he's got a little constipation in him.

When was the last time the first pitch was treated as solely and honor and not a promotion? Jersey Shore cast? American Idol winners? Owners of key advertisers? All selling something. when was the last time "The Mets/Aramark's employee of the month" threw it out?

Meanwhile, just last year, the NFL cracked down on Eagles tight end Brent Celek (HwasOMFT!) for a more guerrila-style type of thing for the same company.

Yeah exactly. They didn't mind that players were striking poses for hard liquor (liquor? ... I hardly know her) they just don't like it going on when they're not getting a piece of the pie.

Well, I haven't been to the park enough to see these folks. Actors are certainly all pimping something. This seems another level beyond maybe.

I don't consider this over the line in any way. Milwaukee has a stadium named Miller Park. Alcohol is alcohol.

I think we're going to see more things like this, not specifically to baseball, but just in general. Advertising is shifting. Certainly this is more interesting than a generic Captain Morgan banner on the outfield wall or their name stamped on the back of my program.

Also, I'm sure they came up with some exceedingly-generous way to replace the projected income from the campaign into the coffers of the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund (which helps NFL vets deal with various medical and life hardships they experience after leaving the sport), which was to receive money ($10K-$100K) for each post-TD "Morgan Pose." Because they care like that.

I have no problem with first pitches being tied to promotions or celebrities. Or owners or politicians. With this Captain Morgan character? I laughed when I saw it (got an Email from MLB the other day) and shook my head and said oy. Its obvious there is no line if you have the money or the connections. I just don't find this instance proper. I'm sure there are many other places the good captain could go to get his publicity.

I hate to admit it, but this thread has totally put me in the mood for a shot of rum.

Captain Morgan Private Reserve is good stuff. If Perez gets in the game though you have to switch to Tequila.

Is it the thread, or is it quitting time on Friday?

It's the thread. I usually walk around craving grilled cheese sandwiches, not booze. Bit of both wouldn't be bad right now.

mmm...Grilled Cheese... doh, I don't have any bread. Pizza it is. basically the same thing.

Arrr....this is just so wrong. He should be throwing with a hook hand. Duh.

Now that would make it totally acceptable to me.

Would give new meaning to the phrase "throw him the hook"

Funny, because it's put me in the mood for one of the Captain Morgan's girls. The Captain tried to infiltrate the NFL (last year?), apparently paying players to strike the pose in an end zone celebration. The No Fun League nixed it, saying they'd fine anyone who tried it AND ban that player from sleeping with one of the Captain Morgan's girls.

So it's likely that Capt. Morgan will get more mound time this month than Oliver Perez.
