Just made the decision to dump Time Warner and their shitty DVRs for the greener pastures of Verizon FiOS, comparable rates for faster Internet and the NFL Network and NFL Red Zone channels.

I'm giving up a handful of Syracuse U basketball games that Time Warner carries exclusively to the locals up here, as well as possibly the Saturday WPIX Mets games that TW pipes in (though Verizon may do this also, I could not confirm).

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

Cablevision , I complain about it at times but when I looked in to changing carriers the choices were awful , last time I checked Verizon FiOS were in my area but not yet with the fiber optic TV , is n't that the big selling point?, last I read it would take several years for FiOS to get going throughout the whole city.

The packages available with the dishes were not any better than what I have now.

Cablevision pisses me off, but that's what I got. My DVR box dies every 3 months, zapping everything I have saved on it. I've bitched them out on the phone a couple of times trying to get them to at least comp me a month of the DVR service, but to no avail.

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

i've got directv.

our local cable monopoly is service electric, and their packages paled in comparison to satellite - similar price, but way less channels (though in hindsight they prolly carry all the ones i actually do watch).

i doubt fios will ever make it to sussex county. verizon doesn't even run phone lines up here. and for the longest time, they didn't even have their cell network in this beautiful slice of new jersey.

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

I got Time Warner. They're scared of Fios coming in and so offered a 2-year deal at a pretty good rate for TV & internet, which I accepted more than a year ago. Fios still ain't here yet, but they are coming: They've asked to wire our building in fact.

I don't have many complaints with TimeWarner beyond their arcane and inefficient procedure for reporting/acting on service outages (I could confirm cable is out with all of my neighbors and they won't believe the outage is widespread until they get the requisite calls, so instead they schedule a service appt with every individual caller), but I have to say, service outages have been few.

Also, their technicians all hang out at the playground at the end of our street and smoke pot all day then speed through the hood, but that's their thing. (their hub isn't far away).

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

I had Direct TV for a long time. Had to switch to Charter in April due to moving and Direct TV wanting to install a pole (and charge me $100) due to a tree in my backyard (south of the house).

Both Charter's service and selection are shitty. With Direct TV I got both SNY and the NFL Network. I got an HD TV in May and Direct TV offers many more HD channels as well for the same price I'm paying Charter.

I think that before next baseball season I will be paying the $100 for the pole in my backyard and switching back to Direct TV.

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

Verizon FIOS. I had DirecTV for three years, and was quite happy with it, but switched back in February because I wanted to start getting an HD signal. (If I got HD from DirecTV I'd have to stop using TiVo and I like TiVo more than I do DirecTV.)

There's only one thing I miss about DirecTV: with their version of the MLB Extra Innings package I'd be able to choose from the home and away telecast for just about every game, which meant that I was able to get a lot more of the SNY crew and a lot less of the awful broadcast teams in places like Washington and Florida. On the other hand, I used to be blacked out entirely from many Mets-Phillies games because the local sports channel that carries Phillies games refuses to provide their telecasts to satellite providers.

Cablevision. And honestly, I love Cablevision. They've always been very quick to respond, and I think their service is really good. We've lost two DVR boxes over the years too, but other than that, I have nothing bad to say.

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

I think the best thing you can say about Cablevision (and probably most others in different areas) is that they can no longer act like the arrogant pricks they once did because of the "intrusion" of Satellite and FioS, etc. into their previously monopolized areas.

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

Time Warner, and I hate them. Hate them, hate them, hate them. Somehow, I'm in Astoria with about a billion other people and it's my only non-satellite option. I'm paying upwards of $130/month for DVR, HD cable (1 box), and internet. No premium channels. That's all ok, because the internet goes out every few months and it only takes them a week and a half to get a technician out.

I badly need competition. FIOS isn't here yet, and RCN, which also covers much of Astoria at about 2/3 the cost, for some reason is not interested in my block. If it wasn't for sports I'd be watching everything on my computer, but of course the cable companies have deals with the leagues so they've boxed me out there, too.

I'm in the same boat as Number 6. I hate Time Warner so badly that even if Fios was more expensive I think I'd switch for the hell of it. No competition means we are getting screwed.

Love might be a bit strong for me but........I have rarely had problems with connections on the phone or PC , and when I have calling their costumer service was fine and they always fixed it over the phone , the one time they could not they had a tech out the next day.....as for the TV side, the few issues I have had were fixed over the phone and I do like that HD channels are not charged as extra and they add more all the time.

That was one of the things I didn't like when I checked online with other companies, you needed to add a HD package for extra....feck that.

I've had my ups and downs with them (and probably hate them
more because of their owning the Knicks, etc.) but lately the service
has been pretty good. Especially since they rewired from the pole to
fix some cable that was so squirrel eaten that every time it rained the
internet would slow to a crawl and go on and off ... along with the phone.

Unlike the local Time Warner affiliate, FIOS here in Syracuse does not pipe the weekend WPIX games in so I'm out of luck for today and subsequent Saturday/Sunday tilts on that channel. I think next year I'll get MLB Extra Innings to remedy this.

I expected to lose these games. It's a courtesy thing for Time Warner to pipe those games in, this not being much of a Mets town and all.

The way they're playing, this late in the season, it's no big thing. It's literally one game a week. I've bought MLB Extra Innings in the past anyway... by spring 2011 I'll be optimistic and ready to shell out for baseball.

I don't have any choice: up here, it's Time Warner or nothing (Dishes won't work for me since I don't have a clear line of sight).

I just have basic cable, and have no real desire to get more. I keep toying with the idea of dropping cable altogether -- the shows I watch are on broadcast or can be found online.

No.

Hard-ons give me glee. But "Glee" does NOT give me a hard-on. Or, in terms of mathematical logic, a conditional statement is not logically equivalent to its converse.

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

Per the poll, this doesn't effect anyone here, but I found this interesting:

http://host.madison.com/ct/business/tec ... 002e0.html

Tech: FOX pulls channels from DISH in contract dispute

A contract dispute over — what else? — money has resulted in FOX pulling FX, the National Geographic channel, and 19 regional sports networks (such as Fox Sports Wisconsin) off satellite TV provider DISH Network.

The channels were pulled at 2 a.m. Central time (midnight Pacific time) after the two companies couldn't come to a new deal on what DISH would pay to carry the FOX channels.

DISH said in a news release that FOX is demanding a new contract "with an unprecedented rate increase of more than 50 percent," which FOX disputes, according to Multichannel.com.

"FOX's removal of the channels follows the programmer's national TV, print and web advertising campaign designed to intimidate DISH Network and its customers into paying the rate increase," DISH said in its news release. "FOX has flatly refused DISH Network's request to allow customers to continue to watch these FOX channels during the negotiations."

The contract doesn't involve local FOX broadcast TV stations, FOX News or FOX Business News, and those channels remain on DISH.

"DISH Network is not going to allow FOX or any programmer to bully our customers into paying such an unconscionable price increase," Dave Shull, senior vice president of programming for DISH, said in a statement. "FOX has a long history of trying to shake down pay TV providers, including Cablevision, Time Warner, and Bright House. Our customers should not be held hostage in order to finance FOX's irresponsible acquisition of sports rights. Consumers are already burdened enough in this challenging economy."

During the FOX lockout, DISH is making the following networks available for free to all of its subscribers: HD Net Movies, HD Theater, NBA TV, New England Sports Network, NFL Network, NHL Network, Altitude Sports, Big Ten Network, Comcast SportsNet California, Comcast SportsNet Chicago, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Comcast Sports Network Mid-Atlantic, Comcast Sports New England, ESPN Classic, FOX Sports Northwest, FOX Sports Pittsburgh, FOX Sports Rocky Mountain, Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, Mid-Atlantic Sports Network2, SportsNet New York, and SportsTime Ohio.

FOX said it is only asking for fair compensation for its networks, and it warned DISH subscribers could face the same problems with its FOX broadcast and MyNetwork TV stations when deals for DISH to carry those end at the end of October, Multichannel.com reported.

Doesn't really matter when you tell them as long as you give them a correct (as opposed to immediate) disconnect date.
The one thing you should do when you call them is tell them why - even if it's an exaggerated or made-up reason. Tell them you're sick of their monopolistic practices; tell them you're pissed off at the FOX dust-up; tell them their customer service suxx, or whatever.
Without a specific reason they'll probably just assume that you're moving, or that you lost your job and can't afford it, or some other reason that lets them think it's not their fault.

Got the FiOS installed yesterday , the tech was great. Some getting used as it's very different from Cablevision. A few niggling things that I would have asked the tech if I was here. In standard def channels is there a way to have the picture be full screen as a default?, on the remote there is a button to make the screen bigger but I can't find a default setting.

Fox Soccer Channel looks terrible on FiOS and making the screen bigger makes that worse, I hate a TV where the picture is truncated. The tech installed a very annoying McAfee verizon manager/virus thing on the PC that I hate, will be removing that.

I do like all the various options on the TV and on the PC with apps and widgets .

The Cablevision guy that I called to disconnect service was doing all he could to not disconnect, hahaha.....I played around for a minute and told him there was nothing he could do to get me to keep the service, I told him why I was done with CV....yyybbb.....why do these people treat new and or leaving costumers like gold but existing ones like crap?

Because they were so used to having a monopoly in their favor that it simply became habit.
But then when customers actually disconnect for reasons other than leaving town panic starts to set in.

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

3 months free of TV and haven't looked back once. That's not to say I haven't cranked up Hulu to watch an episode of the hit NBC show "Chuck", but I'm real happy I've pocketed >$300 bucks since, and have read more and gone outside and stuff. No desire to flip the switch back on (ask me again in April).

I can't take away my family's [crossout]delicious crystal meth[/crossout] favorite programming. Nor my own love of live NFL, college basketball, and MLB on big mother HDTV's.

Re: Who Feeds Your Brain its TV mush?

was at a bar tonight and some college FB game i don't give 1 or 2 shits about was on HDTV and I almost came 11 times at the crispness/beauty/clarity of all. I totally get it. I still was rolling netflix, etc, but my old-timey TV recently blew it's tubes (literally), so I'm TV-less now, too. whatevs.

Live sports on a big HDTV is the shit. What's better yet is the way Fwife scoffs at the distinctly non-country-cottage aspect of a room, impeccably decorated and arranged by herself, with a 55" black television in the middle of it. It stands out like a dildo in a doily pile.

It's the little things that keep a marriage vibrant, innit?
