Luis Hernandez hasn't been with the team long enough that failure with runners in scoring position is the Met way. Pagan has been a rebel of sorts in his disregard for the team standard most of the season.

Bases jammed for Carter, who is perfect this evening. Cox is going to a lefty --- and Jerry has typicallly gone to a righthanded pinch hitter in these situations --- but he doesn't really have any effective pinch-hitters available, unless Reyes can bat righthanded. It's one of those things where if you treat a guy like he can't hit lefties, you make it true, but denying him any reps against them.

I imagine they had him taking 2-0. I don't recall him getting the same pitch 2-1. (Checking GameDay, both were 92-MPH fastballs --- the first belt high, the second just above the knees, so I guess, yeah, he should have been hacking.) It's worth repeating that Carter had had 128 plate appearances this season prior to that one, but none against a lefthander.

I mean, don't lament the eighth-inning failures and such. Look to the issues that underlie them, or else you're just perpetuating them. And the piling on with Perez. Goodness gracious. We know Perez made a bad choice, but what about Minaya and Manuel responding with apparently conflicting choices? It's like some crappy sports movie where an evil coach is trying to harass his whipping boy into quitting the team and siccing his goons on them. As the player slowly gets up the coach spits out something like, "You want more? Come back tomorrow."
