You shouldn’t volunteer to do three KTEs for the same opponent. This is my third KTE for the Mets @ Nationals and I won’t make that mistake next season. I’m bored of writing about the Nationals. Bored like Hawkeye and BJ:

• Hawkeye: Bored
BJ: So bored
Hawkeye: So bored it's boring
BJ: Boringdingding
Hawkeye: Boronus, Boretis, Boremus. I came, I saw, I bored
BJ: He bored, she bored, they bored
Hawkeye: All aboard
BJ: I was gonna say that!

As a result, I’m playing out the KTE string… just like the Mets as they play the Nationals in DC for three games starting Labor Day, September 6th. While I will focus on the task at hand, I will take a cue from fman99’s recent KTE and intersperse thoughts about living in the DC area for almost 23 years after growing up in New York.

[u:1jfbnozx]September 6, 1:05[/u:1jfbnozx], Mike Pelfrey (13-8, 3.72, 1.44 WHIP) against Jordan Zimmerman RHP, 0-0, 4.50, 0.90). Pelfrey got the win against Washington on April 9, going 6 innings and giving up 2 ER. He got a ND in a loss on May 12, giving up 5 ER in 5.2 IP. J. Zimmerman has pitched 10 innings in 2 starts. He was impressive on August 31 against Florida, 6 IP, no ER.

• I moved here in January, 1988. When I got here, my lifelines to the Mets were the early edition of [u:1jfbnozx]The Daily News[/u:1jfbnozx] and WOR on my cable system. Given the access we now have, it’s hard to believe that the only way that I could read about the Mets was in a day old game story. Then the cable company dropped WOR so I couldn’t see the Mets on TV unless they made it to a national broadcast.

• Compare that to what we have now: you can see every game via Extra Innings and mlb.tv (except for FOX games not shown in this market—don’t get me started about this restriction) and you can talk with fellow Mets fans in real time. With today’s technology, the 250 miles from New York seems shorter.

[u:1jfbnozx]September 7, 7:10[/u:1jfbnozx], Dillon Gee (RHP, MLB debut) against Yunesky Maya (RHP, MLB debut). Hey! My son’s name is Dylan and I’m going to this game with someone else named Dylan! Gee is a former Cyclone. For Buffalo this year, he was 13-8, 4.96 ERA and 1.333 WHIP. He struck out 165 in 161.1 innings.

Maya is from Cuba. According to [u:1jfbnozx]The Washington Post[/u:1jfbnozx], “In his two starts at Syracuse, Maya has allowed one run, eight hits and five walks while striking out nine in 10 1/3 innings. The Nationals signed Maya, 28, this summer to a four-year, $6 million contract and see him as a fixture in their future rotation.”

• The Redskins stink. Not just on the field but in every other way you can imagine. The owner is a megalomaniacal idiot. The media whores itself out to the Redskins. Their fans are—ready for this?—dumber than MFY fans (they know nothing about football, don’t think about the racism of the team name and logo, and go crazy when they win even one game). My hatred for them is so great, I once had a discussion with another New York transplant: we wondered if it would be better for the Redskins to go 0-16 or 2-14 with the two wins at the beginning of the year, thereby building up their hopes only to see them shatter over the rest of the season. I love the Jets. My 2nd favorite team is whoever is playing the Redskins.

[u:1jfbnozx]September 8, 12:35[/u:1jfbnozx], R.A. Dickey (9-6, 2.91, 1.18) against Livan Hernandez (RHP, 9-10, 3.81, 1.34). This will be Robert Allen’s 3d start at Washington this year: on May 19, his Mets debut, he went 6 IP, 2 ER and on July 3, the "Frankie Rodriguez, National TV, we had a chance to show-up Strasburg, my family sat in the heat for 4 hours, blow-up game”, going 7 innings, 0 ER. Adam Kennedy has a HR against Dickey and I. Rodriguez is 4-12.

Livan does it better during the day and this is a day game: his day ERA is 2.70; his night ERA is 4.41. He’s pitched against the Mets three times this year—this is unbelievable—20.1 innings, 3 ER. Facing Livan, Wright has 4 career HR while Castillo is 11-61.

• Nationals Park is nice. Almost plain vanilla but it’s easy to get in and out of (that’s what she said) and the ticket prices are reasonable when compared to Citi Field. Ben’s Chili Bowl (3B side) is wonderful and a DC treasure.

Infield: 1B Adam Dunn, 2B Adam Kennedy or newbie Danny Espinosa, SS, Ian Desmond, 3B, Ryan Zimmerman.

• People have the impression that that the DC Metro system is great. Metro sucks. There’s no other way to say it. You think that your subway ride at $2.25 a pop is bad, try Metro for $5 (they charge by distance). Part of the problem is that it requires funding from Congress, local states and the public. Southern Virginia blocks necessary funding out of spite for Northern Virginia. Congressmen from “out there” block funding, even though their constituents come here on vacation. The fares continue to increase and get more confusing: we now have fares labeled “peak”; “off-peak” and “peak of the peak.” Workers text while driving the train. People have died while riding the Metro. Metro sucks: http://unsuckdcmetro.blogspot.com

Outfield: LF Roger Bernadina, CF Nyjer Morgan, RF, Mike Morse. Apparently, you can commit multiple transgressions in baseball, be penalized, and still play pending an appeal process that takes almost as long to resolve as a case before the Supreme Court. Absurd.

• Some good things about the DC area. The school system in Montgomery County, MD is excellent (they’ve taken care of my sons and that’s all you can ask); the afternoon traffic reporter on WTOP is great http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 4267.html; the Cherry Blossoms are nice; housing prices are exorbitant but better than in New York; Johnny Holiday, voice of Maryland Terrapin football and basketball, is excellent; I enjoy being able to get good seats at Nationals Park to see the Mets… I’m still thinking.

Catcher: either Ivan Rodriguez or Will Nieves.

• Listen up tourists: thank you for visiting DC. When you are wandering aimlessly around the L’Enfant Plaza vicinity, I will help you find the Air & Space Museum (Metro refuses to put up a sign saying which exit to use so many tourists get out at the wrong exit). However, when you’re in the Metro, don’t be a jerk. The fare cards have an arrow on them. That means that you put the card into the turnstile according to the direction of the arrow. The fare cards go in the machine at the beginning and end of your ride, so don’t block the exit finding your card. On the escalators (the ones that work), we walk on the left, stand on the right. Metro thinks it’s rude to tell you this but I don’t care. Don’t block the escalator—I want to get home. On the train, don’t stand in front of the door and force us to go around you. Don’t take an extra seat for your luggage—I’ve been up since 4:30 and want to sit down. This isn’t a playground so don’t let your kids twirl around the metal poles and pull themselves up and down on the overhead bars. Be considerate—don’t embarrass Iowa, Idaho or wherever the frig you’re from.

Bullpen: the closer is Drew Storen.

Ex’s: Livan Hernandez.

Willie Harris: .190, 7 HR in only 36 H, 28 RBI.

Managers: Both guys over-manage and may have lost control of their teams. One will be back next year, which means that my friend has another year to make her move, and the other better not be.

Heart, soul and actual information on an otherwise tired subject. That sound you hear is the slow clap emerging from the Notre Dame huddle as Rudy runs back onto the practice field and now it's building into furious applause.

I feel bad for poor Dillon Gee, who's up against a guy who's going to throw eight shutout innings of three-hit ball, striking out twelve.

Redskins fans sound a lot like Buffalo Bills fans. Being in enemy territory sucks a dick.

Hearty, unexpectedly filling. Warmed over or not, that's a hell of a meal, bmfc.

-- I don't know what "peak of the peak" is, and I think I'd almost rather not know-- my budding aneurysm's already had enough help in developing (with a little hat-tip toward OUR MTA escalator situation).

-- Maya trained at the Mets facility in the DR over the winter, and showcased his stuff there for various scouts this spring. He probably could've been ours. We'll see if we should feel bad about that, I suppose.

-- Though he used to be a nice, fairly normal human being, Nyjer Morgan is nucking futs these days. Bad week for a good guy, or is it possible that there's an Amityville Horror thing happening with Nats Park's centerfield?

That was a stellar KTE. I feel ready to attack both the Nats & DC. Great job.

on May 19, his Mets debut, he went 6 IP, 2 ER and on July 3, “the Frankie Rodriguez “National TV, we had a chance to show-up Strasburg, my family sat in the heat for 4 hours, blow-up game”, going 7 innings, 0 ER.

I think a bro can always pinpoint the moment when he knows he's in love. I'd always thought RA Dickey was sexy, but that was the day I knew.

I love these new style KTEs.
They are much more fun when they are fun.

Great job bmfc1 :)

Not just a racist team name but a racist history as well - albeit one which stays conveniently buried most of the time by those aforementioned media whores.
But they were an all-white team into the 1960s (hell, the Red Sox weren't that slow) with an ownership that condoned it and at least a portion of a fan-base which wasn't shy about wanting it to continue, even to the point where marches were held with signs reading: KEEP THE REDSKINS WHITE.
I wonder if any of them ever saw the irony.

I see this all the time in Boston. "Why can't the T be great like the Metro?" the haters say when in fact all the things that they complain about the T - limited hours, delays, crowdedness, limited coverage of suburbs and outlying neighborhoods - are as bad or worse on the Metro. Not only that but people get arrested for eating and drinking on the Metro. That's just un-American.

Ouch. I guess football brings out the blanket statements in all of us. Though, I feel vaguely the same way about the Packers...in that my 2nd favorite team is the team that is playing them.

Long treatment here on the team whose official colors were said to be "burgundy, gold and Caucasian".
