Beat My Johnson

Centerfield
Sep 02 2010 08:47 AM

That is, beat my All-Time, All-Johnson Team.

Rotation
1913 Walter Johnson (36-7, 1.14 ERA)
1997 Randy Johnson (20-4, 2.28 ERA)
2009 Josh Johnson (15-5, 3.23 ERA)
1971 Jerry Johnson (12-9, 2.97 ERA)

Lineup
1. 1996 Lance Johnson CF (BA: 333 9 HR, OPS: 841, 50 SB)
2. 2007 Kelly Johnson 2B (BA: 276, 16 HR, OPS: 832)
3. 2006 Nick Johnson 1B (BA: .290, 23 HR, OPS: 948)
4. 1987 Howard Johnson 3B (BA: 298, 36 HR, OPS: 928)
5. 1933 Roy Johnson LF (BA: .313, 10 HR, OPS: 853)
6. 2006 Reed Johnson RF (BA: 319, 12 HR, OPS: 869)
7. 1999 Charles Johnson C (BA: .251, 16 HR, OPS: .753)
8. 1921 Ernie Johnson SS (BA: 295, 1 HR, OPS: .697)

Who's my fifth starter you ask? Walter Johnson. My closer? Walter Johnson. Pinch hitter? Pinch runner? Defensive replacement? I think you already know...

I'll tell you what, I'll make it fair. Feel free to use two names, one for the lineup, one for the rotation. You still can't top my Johnson.

I think Bret Sabrmetric started a similar thread. He may have used the same title.

Very similar. But no witty double entendre in the thread title!

My All-Davis Team probably wouldn't beat the All-Johnson Team, but I'll throw it up there:

Rotation:
1934 Curt Davis (19-17, 2.95 ERA)
1920 Dixie Davis (18-12, 3.17 ERA)
1954 Jim Davis (11-7, 3.52 ERA)
2005 Doug Davis (11-11, 3.84 ERA)
1988 Storm Davis (16-7, 3.70 ERA) (Thanks DocTee on edit!)

Bullpen:
1979 Ron Davis (14-2, 2.85 ERA)
1989 Mark Davis (4-3, 1.85 ERA, 44 Svs)

Lineup:
1897 George Davis SS (BA: .353, 10 HR, OPS: .918, 65 SB)
1969 Willie Davis RF (BA: .311, 11 HR, OPS: .811)
1987 Eric Davis CF (BA: .293, 37 HR, OPS: .991)
1962 Tommy Davis 3B (BA: .346, 27 HR, OPS: .910)
1994 Chili Davis LF (BA: .311, 26 HR, OPS: .971)
1984 Alvin Davis 1B (BA: .284, 27 HR, OPS: .888)
1986 Glen Davis DH (BA: .265, 31 HR, OPS: .837)
1983 Jody Davis C (BA: .271, 24 HR, OPS: .795)
1940 Crash Davis 2B (BA: .269, 0 HR, OPS: .623)

TM, you need to add Storm Davis to your rotation

1989: 19-7 4.36
1988: 16-7 3.70

Re: Beat My Johnson

Thanks, I've added him in.

After looking at the Davis vs. Johnson battle a little closer, I'd bet the Davises could compete. The Johnsons look like a much better rotation, but the Davis clan has a slightly better lineup and bullpen IMO)

Re: Beat My Johnson

Johnsons?

Davises?

Suck on my Willies. Team "Willie" has some pitching holes; the rotation's filled with slightly fluky successes, and the middle-relief is somewhat chuck-and-duck. But they do have got rubber arms... and, oh, that lineup.

ROTATION:
1913 Willie Mitchell (14-8, 1.91 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 217 IP, 159 ERA+)
1928 "Wee Willie" Sherdel (21-10, 2.86 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 140 ERA+)
1903 Willie Sudhoff (21-15, 2.27 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 293 IP, 128 ERA+)
1950 Willie "the Knuck" Ramsdell (8-14, 3.68 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 115 ERA+, a friggin' knuckler!)

SWINGMEN:
1987 Willie Fraser (10-10, 3.92 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 110 ERA+)
1997 Willie Blair (16-8, 4.17 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 111 ERA+)
1994 Willie Banks (11-12, 4.04 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 107 ERA+)
1929 Claude "Weeping Willie" Willoughby (15-14, 4.99 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 243 1/3 IP, 104 ERA+)

BULLPEN:
1984 Willie Hernandez (1.92 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 68 GF, 140 IP, 112 K/36 BB, 32 SV, 188 ERA+)
1996 Willie Adams (4.01 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 76.1 IP, 68 K/20 BB, 128 ERA+)

LINEUP:
RF 1897 "Wee" Willie Keeler (BA: .424, OBP: .464, 0 HR, OPS: 1.003, 64 SB)
2B 1980 Willie Randolph (BA: .294, OBP: .427, 7 HR, OPS: .834, 30 SB, 119 BB)
LF 1973 Willie Stargell (BA: .299, 44 HR, OPS: 1.038, 87 XBH)
CF 1965 Willie Mays (BA: .311, 52 HR, OPS: 1.043, 11.0 B-R WAR, GG)
1B 1969 Willie McCovey (BA: .320, OBP: .453, 45 HR, OPS: 1.108)
3B 1951 Willie "Puddin' Head" Jones (BA: .285, 22 HR, OPS: .828)
SS 1939 Willie Wells (Negro Leagues HOFer, nicknamed "Devil" and "Shakespeare of Shortstops" for his absurdly smooth defensive play)
C 1996 Dan "Willie" Wilson (BA: .285, 18 HR, OPS: .774)

BENCH:
OF 1985 Willie McGee (BA: .353, 10 HR, OPS: .887, 56 SB, GG)
OF 1973 Willie Crawford (BA: .295, 12 HR, OPS: .849, 12 SB)
OF 1968 Willie Horton (BA: .285, 36 HR, OPS: .895)
1B/OF 1983 Willie Upshaw (BA: .306, 27 HR, OPS: .887, 10 SB)
1B/2B/3B/OF 2009 Willy Aybar (BA: .253, 12 HR, OPS: .747)
3B/OF 1997 Willie Greene (BA: .253, 26 HR, OPS: .822)
C 1927 Willie Moore (Warm body in a mask)

Total brain fart. When I was thinking of this last night, Davey was going to be my Player-Manager.

1973 Davey thumped to the tune of .270, 43 HR, .916 OPS.

I looked at them too. Could you count Smokey Joe Williams as a pitcher? He was 41-3 in the Negro Leagues in 1914, and outdueled a number of prominent major leaguers in exhibition games -- including Walter Johnson, at least twice.

Re: Beat My Johnson

As someone who eagerly grabbed Willie Wells as my designated defensive wizard, I'd definitely allow the Smokey Joe inclusion.

On a different note: the Jacksons (nice peaks, but thin) and Smiths (deeper, but without any really dominant players) are really disappointing potential entrants.

Campy x 9 won't hit a lot of home runs, but he'll steal some bases for you. And if he's his own manager, you know he's got the green light.

Re: Beat My Johnson

My first shot at Team "John"s without "-sons," with B-R WAR:

C: Johnny Bench, 1972, 9.1 WAR
1B: John Olerud, 1993, 8.3 WAR
2B: Johnny Evers, 1908, 6.5 WAR (B-R listed nickname(s?): "Crab and Trojan")
3B: John Franklin "Home Run" Baker, 1912, 10.0 WAR
SS: John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, Negro Leagues
LF: John Patsy "Tito" Francona, 1959, 5.8 WAR
CF: Johnny Damon, 2000, 6.6 WAR
RF: "Silent" John Titus, 1905, 6.5 WAR

SP: John Clarkson, 1889, 16.0 WAR (He went 49-19 with a 153 ERA+. Only his second-highest win total, though.)
SP: John Dwight "Happy Jack" Chesbro, 1904, 8.8 WAR
SP: John Lackey, 2007, 6.3 WAR
SP: John Smoltz, 1996, 6.1 WAR
SP: Tommy John, 1970, 5.7 WAR

CL: John Franco, 1988, 3.2 WAR

Probably missing a few obvious players and a ton of not-so obvious ones, but my starting lineup and rotation (plus Franco) would be good for about 99 wins over replacement, plus whatever Pop Lloyd did. Figure replacement level around 47 wins, this team could go 146-16 if Lloyd only played at replacement level.

Re: Beat My Johnson

For comparison, CF's team:

Rotation
1913 Walter Johnson (36-7, 1.14 ERA) 12.4 WAR
1997 Randy Johnson (20-4, 2.28 ERA) 7.7 WAR (2002 was B-R's favorite, with an 8.8)
2009 Josh Johnson (15-5, 3.23 ERA) 5.3 WAR (2010: 6.2 so far)
1971 Jerry Johnson (12-9, 2.97 ERA) 0.8 WAR (1969: 0.9)

Lineup
1. 1996 Lance Johnson CF (BA: 333 9 HR, OPS: 841, 50 SB) 6.8 WAR
2. 2007 Kelly Johnson 2B (BA: 276, 16 HR, OPS: 832) 4.3 WAR
3. 2006 Nick Johnson 1B (BA: .290, 23 HR, OPS: 948) 5.2 WAR
4. 1987 Howard Johnson 3B (BA: 298, 36 HR, OPS: 928) 4.5 WAR (1989: 7.7)
5. 1933 Roy Johnson LF (BA: .313, 10 HR, OPS: 853) 3.4 WAR
6. 2006 Reed Johnson RF (BA: 319, 12 HR, OPS: 869) 3.6 WAR
7. 1999 Charles Johnson C (BA: .251, 16 HR, OPS: .753) 2.9 WAR (1997: 4.4)
8. 1921 Ernie Johnson SS (BA: 295, 1 HR, OPS: .697) 1.1 WAR (1916: 1.8)

That's good for around 60 WAR, 67 or so if we go with B-R's favorite years. So they're good for 107-114 wins without counting a fifth starter or closer (not that I'm sure how a closer or fifth starter would work on these teams).

LWFS's Team Willie starting lineup/rotation/closer (yeah, that's an arbitrary cutoff, but whatever) would be good for 75 WAR, plus Willie Wells' best season for at least 121 wins.
